Russ Feingold stands up on the floor of Congress and shows everybody his spine.

The President issued a call to spread freedom throughout the world, and then he admitted that he has deprived Americans of one of their most basic freedoms under the Fourth Amendment -- to be free from unjustified government intrusion.

The President was blunt. He said that he had authorized the NSA’s domestic spying program, and he made a number of misleading arguments to defend himself. His words got rousing applause from Republicans, and even some Democrats.

The President was blunt, so I will be blunt: This program is breaking the law, and this President is breaking the law. Not only that, he is misleading the American people in his efforts to justify this program.

Now that is more like it! Step up gentlemen, you know what the president is doing is wrong. You know he is breaking the law. You know he is chipping away at the freedoms of our citizens. You know he is bullying his party into compliance. You know he will never demonstrate any restraint in turning our country into a shell of its former self.

If our Democratic leaders do not stand up now then when? If they don't call the president on his abuses of power then who will? With the republicans cowed by the threats from Karl Rove we have nobody left to defend our freedoms except the Democrats.

So follow Russ Feingolds lead, and Ted Kennedy's, and Nancy Pelosi's, and start speaking with one unified voice. The country will follow you. They just need somebody to lead.
