I switched to public school in 7th grade and stopped going to church as soon as I was old enough to refuse my mother's request. I now consider myself a fairly spiritual person but don't follow any particular formal religion.

Stories like these make me truly appreciate what a wonderful and forward thinking man my father was. He was raised in an Eastern Rite Catholic church and was never particularly religious himself, although he attended Mass with my mother more as a matter of habit than anything else. Although being of a generation that SHOULD have had more traditional views of a woman's role, he encouraged all three of his daughters to become educated, independent women. He never regretted having only girls and NEVER made us feel that we were less valuable than sons.

It horrifies me that people who think as this priest does still exist and are permitted to counsel and advise anyone.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9361564.post-36955746984929482302012-12-28T09:56:57.390-09:002012-12-28T09:56:57.390-09:00Your comment is really good @Deb7:33 AM.

There is domestic violence and incest and the quaint custom of shunning, not to mention the &^%$%& puppy mills.

I was born into a Catholic family, no choice about baptism or attending a non-catholic school. I left the church when I left home. But believe me, for the first 18 years of my life, priests and nuns practiced brainwashing on a daily basis. That's why we listened; there was no escape. My own F-I-L, who is primarily a liberal person, goes over the deep end when we talk about things like SS. I am so glad that I broke away from that.

That was almost 20 years ago. Even then, I remember having a difficult time consolidating the teachings of the church, the bible and my view of the world. There were many pieces that just wouldn't fit. Part of the problem was that one year, I read the bible all the way through, from cover to cover. To stay Christian, I had to stick with just the passages that they would talk about in church. I can see why the Westboro Church is able to legitimately use the bible to spew their hate. Everything they are protesting is also in there. Since that time, I have read the bible again all the way through two more times. Mainly to find all the passages that I found to be offensive and counter to what a caring, decent person would follow.

My break from the church came out of a tragedy. A little boy in my son's Mother's Morning Out group died unexpectedly after x-mas day. He was only six years old. Going to his funeral, thinking how easily it could have been my son, it was too much. The religion I had been raised with wasn't helping through the pain and the fear of that incident.

I started doing what the church told us never to do. I started studying other religions. I was trying to find something to help me through the crisis. What I found was much more. I finally started critically questioning the Christian religion, and I began to see how manipulating it is.

Gryphen, I would love to see a post (if she is comfortable telling it) where your daughter describes in her own words what helped her crack through the Christian mind-set (brainwashing) she had been subject to in Georgia. From your posts, I know you helped her, what do you think helped her the most?

Maybe in the comment section, others could tell their story of what happened to them or what they did to break through the grip of religion.

You never know how a post like that, might help others.Debhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14444466776725013431noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9361564.post-39674888287609183922012-12-28T07:18:25.898-09:002012-12-28T07:18:25.898-09:00I think the only reason any women adhere to any of...I think the only reason any women adhere to any of the Abrahamian faiths (Jew/Christian/Muslim) is simply because they haven't read the Old Testament/New Testament/Koran.

Either that or their reading comprehension leaves much to be desired

OR

...they, like many in their faith(s), think they can pick and choose "the good parts"
-- the parts that support their prejudices --
of their religious text(s) and disregard the rest
-- sort of a religion ala-carte.

But, you should know: if you ARE doing that, you're simply picking passages out of your "holy books" as an excuse to be an asshole.
Randallnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9361564.post-52569973626601748832012-12-28T07:17:48.587-09:002012-12-28T07:17:48.587-09:00Same here. The mother, a practicing Catholic, had had 9 pregnancies in 10 years of marriage and four children. After a difficult pregnancy with her fourth child, she was told by her doctor not to get pregnant again. She talked it over with her young and inexperienced priest who told her that it was her duty to bear as many children as "God sent her." She almost died when she lost the fifth child during her fifth month of pregnancy. The ignorance and audacity of that priest almost took the mother away from four young children and he caused the mother and her husband much grief.
BeaglemomAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
