Yes, very unusual. It did take me five years to get my degree because I had to take a lighter load in order to work to pay for registration and books. Lucky for me back then it was affordable and I could live with my parents and have free use of a car. So I graduated without any student debt and got a job in my chosen profession straight out of college.

I never had a gap year. I'm enjoying my gap years now. It's called retirement.

I've gone to school and worked ever since I was 16. I always took supplemental courses in summer school, back when you could do that. And even in the few months between high school graduation and the start of college I worked part time.

So for the first time, in my retirement, I am not working. And it feels wonderful. I am really enjoying life like I never have before. No one tells me what to do, I have no deadlines I don't impose on myself and I am free to choose my activities and set my own schedules. I think my body loves it more as now I can enjoy a natural sleep pattern with no alarms to wake me up. mlaiuppahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13792165896828163411noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9361564.post-12894503375745631112016-05-02T12:52:02.762-08:002016-05-02T12:52:02.762-08:00I worked during college to pay for it. I think 12 units cost me $120, not including books. I bought used books or used the ones in the library when I could. My parents helped the first year or two but after that I made enough money working nights or during the summer to pay for my college.

Those days are long gone. But they shouldn't be. No child should be denied college because of money. Nor should any student or their family be put into decades of crushing debt to pay for it.

Notice you cannot refinance student loans like you can refinance your house or other loans. And the interest rates are higher.

The financial industry are parasites sucking the life out of our future generations through student debt.

I urge American students to go to Slovenia and go to college for FREE. I was accepted at the University of GA in 1971 and earned my degree in three years. Some of my classmates didn't think I was intellectually inferior because they asked for my assistance in understanding course material, and I freely gave it. The same thing happened in graduate school. I went on to teach high school for 33 years, retiring in 2009 due to health issues. Not once on my job did an administrator ever hint that I didn't know the material I was teaching. They were impressed at the level of knowledge I displayed about subject matter in the classroom. I passed all of my teacher certification tests with high scores the first time while some had to take their tests multiple times. Race is not an accurate indicator of one's level of intelligence, work ethic, propensity to commit acts of violence, morality, etc., and anyone who thinks it is has simply spent his/her life in a closed, sheltered environment.majiinoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9361564.post-23535537225755570712016-05-02T11:53:19.621-08:002016-05-02T11:53:19.621-08:00I'm African-American and I attended a school t...I'm African-American and I attended a school that didn't use affirmative action (they didn't need to; as they had always admitted students from other ethnic and racial backgrounds)(.
