People throw around the "who am I to judge" quote, but it's out of context. What the pope actually said was “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?” Entirely different.

The media did a terrible disservice to their audience by cropping that quote to imply it to mean something it doesn't. There's nothing about that statement that should have given people cause to think the Catholic Church might accept gay marriage. Gay people? Sure. In the eyes of the Catholic Church, and the pope, it's not the being gay that's a sin, it's engaging in sex outside of Marriage. No different from how the Church views straight couples living together or pre-marital sex. The Church doesn't turn away gay people for being gay. Note that Mo Rocca who's said he's gay read the first reading at the Mass at Madison Square Garden. Acceptance of gay marriage? Never. Cannot happen. The best gay people are going to get from the Catholic Church is if it would change its policy that homosexuality is a behavioral disorder. But Church policy is different from doctrine. The doctrine of the Catholic Church is clear: marriage is a man and a woman. Doctrine can't change. It will never change. Another example of the difference between policy and doctrine is denying Communion to remarried divorce people. That can change because it's policy not doctrine. Women priests? Never, because it's doctrine.

It's unfair to judge/malign/discard the Pope based on fundamental misunderstanding of how the Catholic Church works and on things he never said. If a "meeting" actually took place, then Pope Francis would probably feel bound to respect the exchange as priviledged and confidential. Although Davis is not Catholic, the Holy Father would still fulfill his duty to minister to a needy child of God.

That gives Davis control over the narrative. She can bask in the reflected goodness of the Pope and paint him as an admirer of her politics and her actions, and the public will have no way to know the truth. I don't trust Davis as far as I could throw her.

Still, it seems fickle for people to suddenly turn on the Pope here. After all, if he did meet Kim Davis to provide pastoral care, he's doing exactly the kinds of things Jesus (and St. Francis of Assisi) preached and practiced. He's devoting care to the outcasts of society. Kim Davis, in the minds of many people, is as despised as the tax collectors and lepers Jesus cared for so attentively.

Had he refused to meet with her after the request was made, she would have used that to her advantage too. Poor martyred Kim Davis! The Pope washed the feet of prisoners, but refused her heartfelt plea for an audience. Her supporters would have bristled with self-righteous indignation.

The Pope seems to have been ambushed, put in a difficult position not of his own making, but he has the grace and aplomb to acquit himself honorably.Judenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9361564.post-36205884341901906812015-10-01T00:04:25.619-08:002015-10-01T00:04:25.619-08:00I found it on Yahoo News and the Huffington Post. ...I found it on Yahoo News and the Huffington Post.
