President Obama speaking to Urban League about gun violence: "I believe a lot of gun owners would agree that AK47's belong in the hands of soldiers, not in the hands of criminals. That they belong on the battlefield of war, not on the streets of our cities."

(Remarks about guns starts around the 4:10 mark)

The President is in an untenable position when it comes to doing something about guns.

Gun sales skyrocketed mere days after his inauguration, and have steadily increased ever since, simply out of fear that he MIGHT do something to curtail American's easy access to guns. After this speech you can count on it going higher still, and if he ACTUALLY tried to implement a gun control policy the gun lobby would fight him at every turn while gun sales hit an all time peak.

I am not exactly sure WHAT the President can do about this without an overwhelming Democratic majority in both the House and Senate that is.  And even THEN he may not find the support that he needs to do anything concrete about the problem.

Especially when you consider this.

As you can see this culture of guns has become part of our national DNA, as hard to remove from our American identity as it would be to remove the drinking of tea from England's.

Of course nobody's teabag has ever been responsible for the deaths of 12 innocent people. I'm just saying.

Won't be long before liberals take to the streets with AK-47's in their jihad against chicken sandwiches.

Won't be long before we have TSA style metal detectors at all public venues. We already have them a lot of schools. Why not movie theaters, restaurants, banks, etc.?

I'm a gun toting liberal. Have had a concealed weapons license for 25 years. However, I'm all for some responsible legislation covering the sales loopholes and limiting high-powered weaponry. So, if the conservatives don't want any kind of gun control legislation, then they shouldn't have any problem with the metal detectors, especially in light of their full-throat supported for TSA and all they do.

    1. As a non gun-toting liberal who completely supports the Second Amendment, I have been thinking a lot about what could have prevented the Aurora shootings. My first thought was an assault weapons ban... but if he couldn't get them in Colorado, he would have just bought them somewhere else (or gotten them illegally). What makes more sense to me, and what might have the best chance of being passed into (federal) law, is to require that local law enforcement track all sales of guns (as is done in California and New York) and possibly also track all large purchases of ammo. Restricting or eliminating the sale of high-capacity clips and magazines for semi-automatic weapons also seems sensible to me.

It is weird that after 4 years, people are still paranoid that "Obama will take away our guns." That sort of thinking does make rational discussion about gun control a lot more difficult.

O/T but Shelly really stepped in it this time!

Forty-two religious and secular organizations united on Thursday in condemning conservative lawmakers' allegations that Muslim-American individuals connected to the U.S. government may be trying to spread the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood.

They directed their criticisms at Reps. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), Thomas Rooney (R-Fla.) and Lynn Westmoreland (R-Ga.), who recently wrote to various government agencies and asked them to investigate the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood. In their letters, the lawmakers targeted top State Department official Huma Abedin and several advisers to the Department of Homeland Security.

"[W]e write to raise our voices in protest of your recent letters regarding prominent American Muslim individuals and organizations," the 42 organizations wrote in a letter to the lawmakers on Thursday. "These letters question the loyalty of faithful Americans based on nothing more than their religious affiliations and what is at best tenuous evidence of their associations. As such, your actions have serious implications for religious freedom and the health of our democracy."

The signatories include the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which often sides with Republicans on social issues, along with the Interfaith Alliance, American Civil Liberties Union, American Baptist Churches USA, NAACP and United Church of Christ.

"Far from supporting the safety of our country, these accusations distract us from examining legitimate threats using proven, evidence-based security strategies," the groups wrote. "Moreover, we know all too well the danger of casting suspicion on loyal and innocent Americans simply because they hold particular beliefs. We will not stand idly by and allow our country to revive federal investigations into innocent individuals based on their religious adherence."

The Anti-Defamation League has already condemned the lawmakers, calling their allegations "anti-Muslim conspiracy theories."

The accusations stem from a report by the Center for Security Policy, a group run by Frank Gaffney, who has been crusading against the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood and Sharia law for years.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have condemned their colleagues' accusations.

Probably about 37 seconds. But President Obama is absolutely correct. And US gun owners should admit that no one needs to own an AK-47. This is absolute nonsense. Too many people have become NRA and Grover Norquist zombies in this country.

o/t but Todd poses with guns for charity or recruitment

Judging by the body language of Laila Ali in the photo, Todd hasn't been spending too much time in the shower. If she leans away any farther she'll fall out of her chair.
Todd Palin attends NBCUniversal's 2012 Summer Press Tour.

Brent Gleeson, a former Navy SEAL, told them, “Honestly, another reason I think we all did this show is not just for the charities and to shine the spotlight on the soldiers that have gone before us and those that will continue to fight the fight.
“I mean, let’s be honest — recruitment is a huge aspect and focus in the Special Operations Forces right now, as it is in the police force”

Kinda makes you wonder if these Jared Loughners and (accused) James Holmes types are whack-jobs programmed by the NRA and gun manufacturers to wreak havoc in order to sell weapons, doesn't it? (/snark)

I do not receive emails that push claims of conspiracy that Obama has plotted to disarm citizens in a plot to take over and end lives so he and a few ithers get all the money. Allegedly, this plot is driven by beliefs of monies hidden involving 9/11. I was informed by an acquaintance that Obama has our military blowing up underground escape routes and the media lies we had earthquakes or tremors.

When I think of the messages that are extreme and have no factual basis in what Obama and his administration say or do I now believe those messages reference emails that circulate to extreme and gullible people. When Beck, Palin and their ilk speak they are dog whistling about Obama literally "ending America" or "transforming" as in The sick lies to instill fear to Obtain power demonizing our POTUS.

An expose of persuasive emails to con people Obama is going to take away guns would be an eye opener.
