Man welcoming his newborn baby home from the hospital is killed by bullet fired by 62 year old neighbor.

Justin Ayers and his newborn baby.
Courtesy of the News Herald:

A new father is dead after what appeared to be a bizarre, accidental shooting Tuesday night.

Steven Justin Ayers, 33, and his wife had gathered family members to celebrate the homecoming of their 3-day-old baby — born on Father’s Day. But the celebration at 2502 Michigan Court ended shortly after 6 p.m. when a stray bullet entered the home from more than 200 feet away, struck Ayers in the back of the head and killed him instantly.

Moments earlier, Charles Edward Shisler, 62, had picked up a loaded 9mm pistol in his residence, adjacent to the Ayers’ home, and the gun discharged. Shisler was in his backyard at 3708 W. 25th St. by the time Bay County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived minutes after the shooting, according to arrest reports.

Shisler was initially uncooperative with deputies and “extremely belligerent,” according to arrest reports. While in custody, waiving his right to remain silent, Shisler told officers the shooting was accidental.

“The damn gun doesn’t usually shoot,” Shisler’s arrest report quoted him as saying. “You have to squeeze the hell out of the trigger to shoot it.”

Sitting in you home gazing lovingly at your newborn baby, and then suddenly dead.

Just another day in the home of the brave, and the land of the 2nd Amendment.

I bet the geezer was annoyed at the celebrations next door and wanted to show those partiers a thing or two. He should be charged with murder. Because that's what it looks like happened. Too often now the perpetrator (if he's white) is treated like a victim; poor guy by the police: "his gun just went off and happened to shoot the dead man in the back of the head. We won't charge him. After all, he said it was an 'accident'." Accident, my foot!

Ummm, what ever happened to "Gun Safety classes"? Don't you HAVE to pass one before taking possession of a firearm?
Oh right, the R's did away with that. Beaglemom I think you're right...he was mad and wanted to show them a thing or two.
He should be charged with murder.
Maybe he will be, the guy killed WAS WHITE!

      A) He is a felon, so should not have had a gun in the first place, and B) he was legally drunk (FOUR HOURS after the shooting, they did a sobriety test, and he barely passed it with blowing a 0.79 - 0.8 being legally drunk!)
      Poor new family...

I can't imagine how that mother feels and the parents and family at this stage. This isn't justice. This is madness.

Doesn't this man at least get charged with endangering lives of others? What if someone's vicious dog is unleashed and runs on someone's property and kills a child? Isn't that owner liable?

What if someone 'accidentally' crashes into a person's house? Do courts consider that just an accident? What if someone says their car just suddenly drove into a group of college students on a campus and killed them? The drivers at least get charged with something.

When it comes to guns, it's almost impossible to charge anyone with anything. This is why these fools feel empowered to go out with itchy fingers and they always get a pass.

The stories about the open carry idiots in Texass (intentionally misspelled) and about accidental shootings raise my blood pressure too much. This story is particularly heartbreaking. Absolutely boggling numbers!

310 Million Guns in America: Highest Gun Violence in the Developed World. Coincidence? Hell No.

The good people over at Face the Facts USA have produced a video that is putting cold, hard numbers on the very established fact that America has an alarming amount of guns. The clip covers growth in handgun, rifles, and shotgun ownership over recent years, and the obvious relationship this trend has with our abnormally high number of gun mortalities.

Surprise: High Gun Ownership Equals High Gun Deaths

There is one single gun control measure which can make a measurable difference, and that is background checks. In states with strict background check requirements, the gun violence rate is sharply reduced. Background checks is not an issue with the voters in Louisiana. Polls have shown that 85 percent of the state’s voters favor the concept of background checks, it is only fear of losing the financial support of entities such as the NRA which prevents lawmakers from doing the will of the people.

Every Father's Day is going to be a terrible reminder, and it will start with all the commercials and ads the family will be subjected to starting a month before Father's Day.

I am just so very very sad for this poor family.

The point is not to ban guns, the point is to make certain that every person who owns a weapon is

      A.) Not a criminal
      B.) Sane
C.) Properly trained, certified and licensed by a governmental agency (think DMV of gun ownership)
      D.) Carry liability insurance

Guns don't kill people, reckless, irresponsible people with guns kill people. We want to prevent those who should not have guns from having guns. Simple as that.

Some people are not fit to drive a car because they either can't pass the test or abused the privilege by driving unlicensed, uninsured or impaired. They lose their license and if they keep driving are tossed in jail. Should work the same way with guns.

We're not trying to take your guns away, we just don't want them to fall into the wrong hands.

Owning a gun is NOT your birthright, it is a privilege that should be won by proving responsibility and qualifying for ownership.

OMG, my heart goes out to that mother, that family for such a horrific 'accident'.

This is going to be more and more common, where we are not even safe in our own homes, in our own beds, because of irresponsible human beings having a weapon at their disposal when they are drunk or pissed off or scared or drugged, because 'it's my constitutional right' to be able to own a firearm.

Children will be mowed down, children will kill other children, woman will be slaughtered by disgruntled ex's, but the fact that you can be in your own kitchen, celebrating a moment of joy and have it all end in a heartbeat, is deeply shocking.

A wife and mother who planned a life with her husband and father to her child, left broken and shattered in a time that should be filled with joy and wonder, newness and promise. It's so wrong, so insidious, so brutal. All that planning, anticipating, sharing, gone the moment that drunken idiot grabbed his gun an changed the trajectory of an innocent family's life...forever.

The fantasy of the wild wild west in the minds of some of these gun owners is mind-boggling. Are they role-playing? Imagining a posse of law-breakers riding into town and they are the shoot-em hero....... Guns are passe in this present time, if one wants to defend themselves. What about martial arts? It's good for mind and body and no one gets killed.

I guess the old west stories, which are unique, cling in the minds of people who want their 15 minutes of fame. They want to be John Wayne, but act like the guys in "Armed and Dangerous".

Lookout Missouri, your state is about to be poisoned in a not good way at all...

The Devious, NRA-Backed Plan To Turn Missouri Into The Wild West For Gun Owners

When Missouri voters go to the polls in August, they will face a seemingly innocuous question: “Shall the Missouri Constitution be amended to include a declaration that the right to keep and bear arms is a unalienable right and that the state government is obligated to uphold that right?” Based on this description, it’s not at all clear that this amendment does anything at all. After all, both the Second Amendment and a provision of Missouri’s existing constitution protect the right “to keep and bear arms.” And the Supreme Court already held in McDonald v. Chicago that Missouri is obligated to comply with the Second Amendment.

But, while the text of this ballot question suggests that a “yes” vote will do nothing more than reaffirm principles that are already in the law, the reality is quite different. If this amendment passes, it will turn Missouri into a virtual free-for-all for firearms.

If this amendment passes, it will make several changes to the state constitution. The actual amendment does not simply restate existing rights. It expands gun rights in Missouri to apply to “ammunition, and accessories typical to the normal function of such arms.” It deletes language from the state constitution providing that the right to bear arms “shall not justify the wearing of concealed weapons.” And, perhaps most significantly of all, it provides that any law that touches upon the right to bear arms in Missouri must survive “strict scrutiny,” the most difficult test that exists under American constitutional law in order to avoid being struck down by the courts.

Missouri Town Discovers People Don’t Like Vacationing Around People Openly Carrying Firearms

Turns out, people don’t find it particularly relaxing to be surrounded by strangers carrying guns.

The Lake Ozark, Missouri Board of Alderman voted last week to ban gun owners from openly carrying firearms, even if they have a concealed carry permit, because they were afraid that armed individuals would chase away tourists. “We’ve had a tough time over the years promoting Lake Ozark as a family area,” Alderman Larry Buschjost explained. “We want you on the Strip with families, everywhere in Lake Ozark with families. We want you to bring your kids down here and let them loose. For the life of me, I don’t understand why I would have to carry any type of gun, concealed or otherwise.”

The ban was initiated by the local police chief, in part due to concerns raised by business owners.

Colorado Governor Disowns High-Capacity Magazine Ban He Signed (VIDEO)

The most disputed gun control measure passed in response to the 2012 mass shooting in Aurora, Colorado apparently no longer has the support of the governor who signed it into law.

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) recently told a group of sheriffs that if he and his staff had known ahead of time how much "commotion" a ban on high-capacity magazines would cause, "we probably would have thought about it twice." The Democrat blamed a staff member for making a "commitment" on his behalf that all but forced him to sign the ban, and he said that he never actually expected the measure to pass the state legislature. Hickenlooper also said that after "all the kerfuffle," he went back and got "some facts that we should have had at the beginning."

"Raised in a conservative Mennonite home in rural Ohio, Katie Landry was a sheltered kid. She hadn’t even held hands with a boy when, at age 19, she says her supervisor at her summer job raped her. Two years later, and desperate for help, she reported the abuse to the dean of students at her college.

He goes, ‘Well, there’s always a sin under other sin. There’s a root sin,’” Landry remembers. “And he said, ‘We have to find the sin in your life that caused your rape.’ And I just ran.

Landry ended up dropping out of college, and didn’t tell anyone else for five years."

This is just so so sad. My wife & I have had many great trips to the USA but we've decided to call it a day. I know we maybe shouldn't rule your country out from our places to go to based on what we keep seeing/reading about but, it's just getting worse. We've always wanted to go to Texas but why should we pay out for an expensive trip just to run the risk of being in a place where gun ownership has literally become compulsory?

Sadly from where I am the USA is descending into a lawless rerun of the wild west where you are absolved of any blame as soon as you scream my "what about 2nd amendment rights".

where I live (the uk) we have our fair share of violence I can't deny that, but to see how low the USA has sunk when it's such a young country is so disappointing. I really hope the us politicians come to their senses and do something about the gun problem there. Sadly I don't think it will be in my lifetime.

Congratulations to the GOP and NRA for insuring that any drunk, old, stupid, and irresponsible felon can access a gun.

And congratulations to the gun manufacturers for continuing to make their weapons easier to use, more powerful, and more deadly.

I'm in my fifties, and it wasn't that long ago when people were civil, especially with their neighbors. All it took was a phone call or, at worst, a "Fair fight" with fists to clear the air, and that option was rarely used.
This guy was a convicted felon, drunk and armed. That child will never know nor meet his father, nor have him in his life in any way but whatever photos they have. One can easily replace a gun, but a parent or child? never. How many more will it take?
