Perhaps my favorite part of the movie Game Change.
I don't know about all of you, but FINALLY seeing somebody shut that nasty woman down was exhilarating.
Damn, no WONDER she hates Steve Schmidt with a white hot passion!
It was like she couldn't believe that she'd been told the n word! That didn't fit into her plans. Graciousness in loosing? She couldn't have lost, dammit!
Notice how she was trying to pander to McCain, she said she wanted to tell the country how great he was LOL She just wanted her name chanted once more! She is so nasty and selfish that I don't think she knows how to be nice.
I like the part? THEY F=ING LOST. Old scary sary should have been canned at wasilly city level. Why did Alaskan's even allow that wacko to even exist and continue threats and cover ups?
I loved that part too, especially when seething with barely controlled rage, Steve says "and YOU Sarah Palin, will not change the importance of this proud American tradition!", just Sarah, not Governor, no title, no respect. And yet after Steve said no, she STILL tried to get McCain to ok it !!! Not shown in the movie was the story that they had to shut down the stage and lighting right after McCain spoke because she was still looking like she was going to make her move - she's a scheming, manipulative narcissist.
If I remember that night, she gathered the entire family on stage with her for a photo op, and it DID look like she was going to head to the mic to reasssure her minions that she would be back...she's like the monster you think is dead in a horror film, but as you stoop over to check, a bloody hand grabs you.

This movie was sooooo good, granted, Moore's performance was stellar but I really think she didn't want to get too ugly and kept it at bay. It was brilliant to actually focus on the race instead of just Sarah because so many people watched it because it wasn't just a hit piece. It was worth getting HBO for a month.
Agreed that Moore had a ridiculously fine line to walk. While WE know far too much about the Sarah Palin 'Beast", the rest of America has their opinions based on their own perceptions.
If JM had played the Sarah that WE know, the movie would have been immediately written-off.
As has been stated here prior to GC's release: Moore's job is to portray the character AND promote the movie.
She is NOT a Palin fan, and I believe she played Palin with as much venom as the public would stomach. If she was made TOO evil, the viewing public would say "Bullsh!t", then WHY did she get so far? No, JM had to play both sides of a raging sociopath, and I think she did well. But, again, she is just too soft and pretty to represent the "real" SP.
Harrelson was absolutely riveting. I couldn't take my eyes off him when he was on screen. Ironically, when S.. Schmidt speaks (like on MSNBC), I am drawn to his voice. He is Not a man given to extraneous words- he is intelligent and formidable.
I just laugh when I think of how Sarah palin hates his guts bc he knows the truth about her.
(PS- YOu can cancel HBO today and it'll be pro-rated. I cancelled mine yesterday and I'm getting a $14 credit. So worth it.)
I think the producers of Game Change had the whole movie walk that line to keep it from being a hit piece.
IMO, that is why they showed Palin's family is such a syrupy sweet way, which anybody who knows anything about them knows is complete bs. This way, no one can say the movie attacks the family or was just out to get Palin.
I'm thinking that instead of "pit bull" or "barracuda" she's more like one of those little yappy dogs that grab onto your pant leg and won't let go, no matter how often or hard you kick at them....

Are you psychotic? What the hell is wrong with you, seriously? This is a great blog and I think Gryphen is great although his defense of Obama goes too far at times (O hasn't been good on civil liberties G) but I'm often saddened by how SOME, I repeat, some, readers/commenters say and do things that just seem truly psychotic. Forced DNA from young boys? Wtf? You need mental help and yes, you will lose whatever small number of Facebook friends that can currently stand you. America is a free country supposedly and so is the western world. This is the antithesis of that. I'm so blatantly anti Sarah that it isn't possible for me to despise her more, but I'm regularly appalled by some of the abusive comments I read on here, and the ridiculous assumptions that any person not 100% condemning Sarah MUST be Willow, Bristol or Sarah. Some of you don't realize all of the new people who might be coming her after Game Change. And if you call anyone who disagrees a troll, you really are hurting the expose Palin cause. I have been working on it for 3 years and my friends don't understand why I still worry about her, but I do, and it is partly because of this blog.

Makes good sense actually--if women have to be forced to make certain gynecological choices and have forced responsibility for carrying a child they don't want or can't afford, then men should be accountable for their role. And having a DNA database of sperm would make it easy to find the man accountable for the women who was not allowed to use contraception and they were both committing the (sin gasp!) of premarital sex. And of course, we'd make date rape and other rapes much easier to figure out too. I'm all for it. What's fair is fair.
I just read Jane's comment now, and I immediately knew it was in rebuttal to the attack on women. I have to give Jane a lot of credit, I've been on this blog for years, and she's always added a lot of value to Gryphen's posts. I admire her for her pov on many subjects.
My favorite part of Game Change, too. Just wish they'd gone ahead and included her trying to speak when the lights were shut down. That would have been more of a "nail in the coffin" moment for me.
Just wondering...do we know who wrote her "prepared concession" speech? Was her head so blown up out of proportion to believe that she could write one on her own? Might have been good for a laugh (can never get too many of those these days).

Interesting, Gina. What a little liar she is; she had ONE paragraph in that speech praising McCain, multiple paragraphs praising herself in that disguised, pseudohumble way she has, and some real nasty if cloaked zingers against the president-elect and continuing the "fight."
When she gave that speech, she was planning to run for president.
I just read her concession speech and I feel real "dirty". It was creepy. 8:12 you are right. She was planning to start her run for president on the night McCain lost. What a selfish and disloyal, may I say treasonist, thing to want to change all of history to give that speech and start running for president.
oh, knock it off. I also know people who called their parents by their first names. Some did it as a right of passage once the kids became adults - great way to show the change in the relationship.

I also would like to testify in front of Congress - plan parenthood saved my life (when I was 19 they detected cancer and I was able to catch it early enough and had a hysterectomy) - but that is a whole other issue.

My neighbors called to see what I thought about the movie since they know I despise her like we all do. I said she has no self-awareness and he said she has tons of self-awareness since it is all about her. Then I clarified and said that she has no capacity to see how others see her. The image she has in her head is not what the rest of the world sees. This scene sums that up. Steve had to deal with her like you would a two year old. You have to escalate to a level of such anger because the first 30 times did not get through. At the age of 47 an adult should be able to get the hint. If not, then what is going on between the eyes? Insanity, mental illness, learning disorder..........FOR SURE!! I just wish that we could all witness the real take down of this witch.
Oh, she got the hint. But she is so used to doing what she wants, and smiling and scheming her way around resistance, that she is like a child whose parents never enforced their "no's". This is the woman who said, "I'll do what I want until the courts tell me I can't."
The one thing she could not control was the complete and final rejection of her by the American people. Nor has she been able to control the press--although she has done a damn good job of manipulating it at times. But think of it this way: she also does not get the hint that she is no longer wanted by the republicans. That means she will crash the convention and expect to have front-and-center attention there. I sure hope so! That's a debate Queen Ann should gladly accept. She just did one with Lawrence O'Donnell with proceeds going to charity. Coulter is the perfect debate foil for Palin's delusions.

Sometimes it appears they withdraw for a time, but weeks or months later, they are back at the same game and trying to insert their will, just to prove they won.
It appears that Sarah may have always trumped her wishes, because people around her were so weary from the constant confrontations and arguing, that she won. It's a game of who is stubborn enough. Reason is out of the equation.

You are 100% correct. You just described someone I lived with for decades. It's exhausting. Chaos was his most effective weapon. If he heard "NO" repeatedly, he'd appear to back off then when it was least expected, chaos would erupt. Before you knew it, he would have won. It's an insane way to live.

This obsession she has with POTUS is maybe another example of her frustration at not getting POTUS's attention. This incredible spectacle we've witnessed of SP's provocations for a fight with President Obama, like, her appeal for him to call her, or choose her, or her verbal insults at him and First Lady for anything she disagrees on, IS an example, IMO, of a person who can't control their impulse to get their way. She can't let it go, because it means she lost and 'her provocateur' won. He's only a 'provocateur' in her mind. And to her, if he doesn't give her the time of day, she won't stop. Just my 2 cents, and I hope I'm wrong on this one, but reasonable good citizens are starting to take notice her preoccupation with this.

Example: my ex told me "some clerk, she needs to be fired". According to him he wrote checks against his paycheck deciding he could mail payments. He waited 3 days to deposit the monies. He wanted a clerk who processed his payment "too fast" fired saying it was her fault his account was overdrawn. Note the call a "she" lose her job for his behavior.
Me paying the bills was raged at I only did it to control. There is no getting through to such people. Ending relationship w/them (ultimate NO) unleashes a monster and will bring you to the brink of destruction, ruined reputation, violence, nightmere of hell. You will be projected on condemned like the clerk, even lose your children. That is what saying No results in with these people.

This is probably the doctor who helped Baldy become The Other Sarah...the trained dog one....old Baldy had her very own Dr Feelgood on the campaign trail!
I kind of think that Sarah Palin dislikes any man that doesn't respond positively to her flirting. Didn't show it in the movie, but she had greeted Schmidt and another male staffer when she was wearing only a towel. I would say that was an invitation. All other attempts to entice Schmidt had evidently failed, so she strips down. How sick is that? VP material? WTF!

Excellent points about endless excuses for Palin. When people use that tactic they usually say "you are just or you are only to put down amd shift blame onto another. Suddenly you are the topic not the behavior called into question. Palin had an entire team vested in her success of top notch professionals. Nothing chauvanistic about that.
Since revenge and retribution are what motivates her to get out of bed every day, I am intrigued by the fact that Sarah has not personally and viciously attacked Steve and Nicole. Not a peep. What gives? The only explanation that makes sense to me is that they have much more info about her that she knows, if made public, would be devastating. I thought Game Change was pretty bad(in a good way) but her silence convinces me that there is MUCH more to be known.
Right after Game Change comes out she challenges President Obama to a debate. REALLY???? Is that all you got, Sarah? Why not "debate" Steve and Nicole?
Maybe now that Nicole has a baby and college is only getting more expensive, we can look forward to, someday, hearing the rest of the story
I agree, you can bet your bottom dollar they know the rest of the story..she may not have been thoroughly vetted before the election but I'll bet she was investigated after they found out what a disaster she was. And Sarah knows they know!
Sarah attacked them by name in Going Rogue, and blamed them for everything. I think she doesn't name them when attacking Game Change because her meme is that there are no "named sources" and the movie is all a lie. If she were to attack them over the movie, that would be admitting that they were the source, and that they actually know more about what went on in the campaign than she does.
After all, they not only saw her performance, but they know the way McCain and the other staffers reacted to it. She doesn't know that.
I have no doubt Wallace and Schmidt know many, many juicy things about her they are keeping quiet--actually, both have said they do. But as professionals, they follow a code that requires them to keep candidates' private secrets, private. I suspect their friends have heard some juicy stories on the third glass of wine. Not talking to the press about those things is different from not laughing at them with friends.
Here's my general 2 cents and advice to fellow inhabitants of this naturally volatile planet. Life is shorter. Tomorrow isn't guaranteed in any way. You can be happy. You dont have to be sour, judgmental or angry. I agree not thinking about Sarah would make me happier, just as not thinking about the number of species going extinct, or the pollution of our oceans, or the poisons in our food, or the Republican war on women, would also make me happier. But remaining alert about, and concerned with, a threat to our happiness and freedom is never ridiculous.

When I watched McCain's concession speech in 2008, I could have sworn that I heard an awful lot of booing going on in the crowd when he talked about Sarah. She also looked like she was crying---tears in her eyes, but a grimaced smile on her face.
Did I imagine the booing? I re-watched it yesterday and still think she was being booed (rightly so).
They were booing when McCain said he called Barack Obama to congratulate him. They then cheered Palin when McCain acknowledged her. Don't give that dumbass crowd any credit. As for Palin, she was crying because she was pissed and knew she had to go back to boring old AK.

Please read the comments on the youtube video, pretty much every one claims this is a fake, and I think so too. I watched the McCain speech and I don't remember anyone booing Palin. It appears that the poster took the boos for Obama and inserted them when McCain talked about Palin.
I know there was creative license, I know it was dramatized, but you know someone finally had to say something serious to get through that woman's thick skull.
She didn't want to thank and honor a war veteran and esteemed Senator for his service and his effort to be 'chosen' to 'lead the country on the right path,' she wanted to be in the spotlight at the closing to launch her own legend and seal her brand-making ability.

Sarah thought she could be 'bold,' and 'plow through the door' of tradition and ceremony. She thinks she's a trailblazer and a new kind of leadership - so she felt entitled or brazen enough to do her own thigh burning sweat induced speechifying to close out her calamitous addition to the defeated ticket.
That is the scene that let me know 100% that she was never pregnant with Trig. In that narcissistic, psychotic little pea brain of hers, she thinks she's smarter than everyone and can get away with anything. In her mind no one is smarter, prettier or more patriotic than her..she thinks she's on the same level at the President and will say and do anything to get her way..that women is dangerous!
I wish they had shown the real reason behind her tears on the stage. It wasn't because they lost (although she really, truly, honestly thought she was going to wake up so blessed to be the second most powerful leader in the world) but because she was denied her last moment in the national spotlight as a wunderkind.
What a loser. No grace. No empathy. No contriteness. She really thinks if she could have been free to fill out that Frontiersmen questionnaire, she'd have saved the ticket and become President in due time without ever really trying. Charmed, our Sarah is, no matter how much she defeats herself.

STILL doesn't get it. Like others here on this thread, I wish they would've included the shut down of the P.A. and lights to keep the paylump from speaking. Also too, either immediately after this scene or after the scene when McCain warns the paylump, "Don’t get co-opted by Limbaugh and the other extremists. There was another scene at a campaign stop where she argues that Steve Schmidt should lie and say Toad was never a member of the AIP and her claims that she was carrying the campaign and raising all the money. And she was more interested in what her poll numbers were in AK and not in learning anything about national policies put forward by McCain, whom she sabotaged more than once.

I loved the movie but still feel they were much too easy on SP. There's a scene where she's asked about her creationist beliefs & she responds that her father has shown her fossils. Didn't she in fact state at one time that she had seen photos of dinosaur fossils with human footprints in them? The film gave her more of a pass than she deserved.
I agree. I know I'm in the minority, but I think casting Julianne Moore was a mistake. She's a wonderful actress, but she is a fundamentally refined and intelligent woman. I don't think Moore was fully capable of capturing Palin's looniness, coarseness and venality; it just wasn't in her.
Agreed. A true redneck actress or someone who could replicate that would have been better. There is absolutely nothing classy or refined about Palin. Moore was far too gentle in her characterization and I for one resented that. I have to agree, this was definitely the best part of the movie. I would like to see more interviews with Steve Schmidt where he is grilled a little more about the events that took place. Has anyone read the book and find that there were important things left out of the movie?
What I like about him is that the first several times, he tried to be nice. He was professional. She just wasn't absorbing what his no meant. I'm surprised that he didn't get her family into a limo and drive them around for an hour until it was all over and everyone had left.
I've never been a big fan of Woody Harrelson, but, there can be no doubt about the amazing caliber of his performance in Game Change. I predict an Emmy nomination, if not a win. His ability to leave his own personal politics at the door and convincingly and sympathetically portray someone from a different political perspective was a testament to his acting ability. I can't think of a known Republican actor who could as effectively cross over and play a Democrat consultant like James Carville or Paul Begala with such authenticity. And without turning the role into a caricature. The last time I was this riveted by an HBO production was Band of Brothers and The Wire.

THIS scene perfectly illustrates why I am so hard on Steve Schmidt for not even yet being fully forthcoming about spilling the beans about the imbecile he knows Palin to be.
If this scene is accurate - and I believe that it is - then Schmidt knew with absolute certainty that Palin wasn't just a moron, but that she was a psychopath. At THAT point it became his duty as a loyal patriotic American to do everything in his power to expose her and keep her as far from the White House as would be humanly possible. He - and Wallace, et al. - failed to forthrightly and succinctly stand up before the cameras and say in very precise and certain terms that Sarah Palin is incompetent, mentally and emotionally unbalanced, and should NEVER be considered for ANY elected office ever again.
However, Schmidt and the others STILL have not done that. Schmidt is slowly inching up to that position, but VERY incrementally. The most damning indictment of Palin by Schmidt has been saying that the events as portrayed in the film version of "Game Change" were chillingly accurate. Since he has not qualified otherwise, that would include this scene.
What's crystal clear is that the GOP is top heavy with dysfunction. When in the presence of Sarah Palin, power player GOP men like William Kristol - who is not stupid - turned off their brains and thought with their peckers. Because Palin gave them more good wood than Viagra, they were more than willing to close their eyes to what an imbecilic buffoon Palin was/is. They were so smitten, so all consumed by their own lust, they were willing to let this congenital moron be a 72 year old cancer patient’s heartbeat away from the presidency.
How fucking reckless can you be?
On top of that, ALL of the GOP political consultants on the McCain campaign knew damn well Palin was a simpering cretinous peawit, yet they willingly put ambition ahead patriotism.

THAT was disaster that resulted in two mismanaged wars - at least one of which was unnecessary and illegal, the second worst economic disaster in history, a Constitution reduced to toilet paper, unwarranted searches, suspension of habeas corpus, looming fascism, and the ire of the rest of the planet. How can McCain and Schmidt spin it that putting Palin in line for the presidency - someone that makes George W. Bush seem like an Oxford Don - would not be INFINITELY WORSE than W's two terms?
I look forward to a time when Schmidt will bare his soul to the cameras and admit his calumny and culpability in what has to be THE most disastrous and reckless political gambit in our nation’s history.
I thought I read in one of the books about the campaign (Sorry I have no idea which one) that at one point in the campaign after they worked for awhile with Palin, some people on the McCain team were beginning to worry that they might actually win and that they knew if that happened they would have to find an excuse for Palin to resign (Good luck with that.) ReplyDeleteThis movie was sooooo good, granted, Moore's performance was stellar but I really think she didn't want to get too ugly and kept it at bay. It was brilliant to actually focus on the race instead of just Sarah because so many people watched it because it wasn't just a hit piece. It was worth getting HBO for a month.

Harrelson was absolutely riveting. I couldn't take my eyes off him when he was on screen. Ironically, when S.. Schmidt speaks (like on MSNBC), I am drawn to his voice. He is Not a man given to extraneous words- he is intelligent and formidable.
I just laugh when I think of how Sarah palin hates his guts bc he knows the truth about her.

And having a DNA database of sperm would make it easy to find the man accountable for the women who was not allowed to use contraception and they were both committing the (sin gasp!) of premarital sex. I think she doesn't name them when attacking Game Change because her meme is that there are no "named sources" and the movie is all a lie. If she were to attack them over the movie, that would be admitting that they were the source, and that they actually know more about what went on in the campaign than she does.

I have no doubt Wallace and Schmidt know many, many juicy things about her they are keeping quiet--actually, both have said they do. Not talking to the press about those things is different from not laughing at them with friends.
Here's my general 2 cents and advice to fellow inhabitants of this naturally volatile planet. Life is shorter. Tomorrow isn't guaranteed in any way. You can be happy. You dont have to be sour, judgmental or angry. Cancel those Palin google alerts, delete negative blogs from your favorites, go find a good partner or friend or adopt a child to walk beside you in life. Do whatever makes you happiest. I loved the movie but still feel they were much too easy on SP. There's a scene where she's asked about her creationist beliefs & she responds that her father has shown her fossils. Didn't she in fact state at one time that she had seen photos of dinosaur fossils with human footprints in them? The film gave her more of a pass than she deserved.

DeleteI agree. I know I'm in the minority, but I think casting Julianne Moore was a mistake. She's a wonderful actress, but she is a fundamentally refined and intelligent woman. I don't think Moore was fully capable of capturing Palin's looniness, coarseness and venality; it just wasn't in her.

I have to agree, this was definitely the best part of the movie. I would like to see more interviews with Steve Schmidt where he is grilled a little more about the events that took place.

What I like about him is that the first several times, he tried to be nice. He was professional. She just wasn't absorbing what his no meant. I'm surprised that he didn't get her family into a limo and drive them around for an hour until it was all over and everyone had left.

His ability to leave his own personal politics at the door and convincingly and sympathetically portray someone from a different political perspective was a testament to his acting ability.
I can't think of a known Republican actor who could as effectively cross over and play a Democrat consultant
like James Carville or Paul Begala with such authenticity.
And without turning the role into a caricature.
The last time I was this riveted by an HBO production was Band of Brothers and The Wire.

THIS scene perfectly illustrates why I am so hard on Steve Schmidt for not even yet being fully forthcoming about spilling the beans about the imbecile he knows Palin to be.
ReplyDeleteIf this scene is accurate - and I believe that it is - then Schmidt knew with absolute certainty that Palin wasn't just a moron, but that she was a psychopath. At THAT point it became his duty as a loyal patriotic American to do everything in his power to expose her and keep her as far from the White House as would be humanly possible. He - and Wallace, et al. - failed to forthrightly and succinctly stand up before the cameras and say in very precise and certain terms that Sarah Palin is incompetent, mentally and emotionally unbalanced, and should NEVER be considered for ANY elected office ever again.
However, Schmidt and the others STILL have not done that. Schmidt is slowly inching up to that position, but VERY incrementally. The most damning indictment of Palin by Schmidt has been saying that the events as portrayed in the film version of "Game Change" were chillingly accurate. Since he has not qualified otherwise, that would include this scene.
What's crystal clear is that the GOP is top heavy with dysfunction. When in the presence of Sarah Palin, power player GOP men like William Kristol - who is not stupid - turned off their brains and thought with their peckers. Because Palin gave them more good wood than Viagra, they were more than willing to close their eyes to what an imbecilic buffoon Palin was/is. They were so smitten, so all consumed by their own lust, they were willing to let this congenital moron be a 72 year old cancer patient’s heartbeat away from the presidency.
How fucking reckless can you be?
On top of that, ALL of the GOP political consultants on the McCain campaign knew damn well Palin was a simpering cretinous peawit, yet they willingly put ambition ahead patriotism.
Sarah Palin in the White House as president represents a greater threat to this nation and the world that the Soviet Union and bin Laden combined. She is a fucking idiot and would have done great harm to this country.
So, I STILL say, "Fuck Steve Schmidt and anybody that looks like him," and will continue to do so until he unambiguously comes clean on what he knows to be the truth regarding Sarah Palin.
I actually blame McCain and Schmidt more than Palin. Palin ss a fatuous simpleton, but that is simply who and what she is; it is her nature and I'm pretty sure there is nothing she can do - even if she would - to change that. She is a narcissistic, vindictive, mean spirited, paranoid, immature shithead and always will be and anybody who actually listens to anything she says without filtering it through their penis will instantly recognize this.
McCain, Schmidt, et al., were so consumed by winning at all costs that they were willing to put the world in mortal danger by putting Palin second in line to the nuclear codes. Palin is easily the least competent or qualified person to ever be that close to the presidency. I lived through the 8 year nightmare that was the last simpering moron in the White House. THAT was disaster that resulted in two mismanaged wars - at least one of which was unnecessary and illegal, the second worst economic disaster in history, a Constitution reduced to toilet paper, unwarranted searches, suspension of habeas corpus, looming fascism, and the ire of the rest of the planet. How can McCain and Schmidt spin it that putting Palin in line for the presidency - someone that makes George W. Bush seem like an Oxford Don - would not be INFINITELY WORSE than W's two terms?
I look forward to a time when Schmidt will bare his soul to the cameras and admit his calumny and culpability in what has to be THE most disastrous and reckless political gambit in our nation’s history.

DeleteI thought I read in one of the books about the campaign (Sorry I have no idea which one) that at one point in the campaign after they worked for awhile with Palin, some people on the McCain team were beginning to worry that they might actually win and that they knew if that happened they would have to find an excuse for Palin to resign (Good luck with that.)
