Dick's Sporting Goods is not just refusing to sell any more rifles, but they are destroying the ones that remain unsold.

Courtesy of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

When Dick’s Sporting Goods said it would no longer sell modern sporting rifles at its Field & Stream stores following the Valentine’s Day shooting at a Parkland, Fla., high school, one question was what would happen to the unsold firearms in its inventory.

Typically a retailer may return unsold merchandise to the manufacturer. But in this case, Dick’s Sporting Goods has decided to destroy them.

“We are in the process of destroying all firearms and accessories that are no longer for sale as a result of our February 28th policy change,” a spokeswoman told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “We are destroying the firearms in accordance with federal guidelines and regulations.”

The so-called assault-style rifles will be destroyed at the company’s distribution centers and the parts sent to a salvage company to be recycled, the Findlay-based retailer added. The company did not say how much merchandise would be included.

Personally I think they should invite Ted Nugent to observe the destruction of these metal penis extenders, and film him as he cries uncontrollably.

I'd watch that in cable.

They may not be dominating the news cycle anymore, but clearly those Parkland students continue to have an impact.

'Merika!

America summed up in one photo.

And we wonder why there are so many accidental shootings and gun fatalities.

Active shooter situation happening right now in San Diego. Update!

Courtesy of NBC San Diego:

San Diego police rushed to a community north of downtown Wednesday for what they described as an active shooter inside an apartment building using a high-powered rifle.

The threat to the community prompted officials to shut down traffic on the ground and in the air as San Diego International Airport is located less than two miles away.

SDPD were called to 2445 Brant Street in the Bankers Hill area just after 9 a.m. for a domestic violence call. When they arrived, they immediately came under fire, officials said.

"They were able to use a K9 to try and clear the apartment. At some point when they were inside the apartment, rounds began to come out of a door, an interior door, nearly hitting the officers," Lt. Scott Wahl said.

So far there is no reports of deaths or injuries, and hopefully is stays that way.

Just another day of the 2nd Amendment keeping Americans safe.

(P.S. I will provide updates to this post as they become available.)

Update: There are also reports that all flights to and from the San Diego airport are being diverted or are on hold, and a local elementary school is on lock down, until this situation is resolved.

Update 2: The gunman has been taken into custody.

No fatalities, which is undoubtedly the best possible outcome for an incident like this one.

Possible reason for concern. Apparently Willow Palin is now armed.

Sarah Palin's ghostwriter helped her compose a rather meandering post which included a bit about her friend Juanita's first moose kill, an article her brother wrote about hanging out with the Duck Dynasty dipshits, and this:

Running joke among the family is “we never win anything!”, so what a cool surprise today that Willow won the Wasilla High School Swim Team fundraiser raffle – a Remington with a sweet scope! (I know... only in Alaska.)

I have to mention that I am a life long Alaskan and have never heard of a high school affiliated raffle giving away a hunting rifle, but let's face it Wasilla marches to its own tone deaf drummer.

I have also never heard of Willow wanting to go hunting, so one has to wonder just how useful of a prize a Remington with a "sweet scope" really is to the budding hair stylist.

What I do know is that Willow tends to hold a grudge, so I will make sure that my curtains are closed at night just to be on the safe side.

Considering what I am about to share I think I will be moving up the list of people who the Palins would like to see eliminated.

Five year old boy kills his two year old sister with a rifle designed for children. Because remember, guns don't kill kids, kids kill kids, with guns designed specifically for them. Update!

Courtesy of Kentucky.com:

A 5-year-old boy who was playing with a .22-caliber rifle accidentally shot and killed his 2-year-old sister in Cumberland County on Tuesday afternoon, according to a news release from the state police.

The shooting happened just after 1 p.m. at a home on Lawson's Bottom Road.

The 2-year-old was taken to Cumberland County Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday.

Cumberland County Coroner Gary White identified the girl as Caroline Starks.

He said the children's mother was at home when the shooting occurred, and the gun was a gift the boy received last year.

"It's a Crickett," he said. "It's a little rifle for a kid. ...The little boy's used to shooting the little gun."

White said the gun was kept in a corner, and the family did not realize a shell had been left in it. He said the shooting will be ruled accidental.

"Just one of those crazy accidents," White said.

Yes it's "just one of those crazy accidents" that happen when you buy your five year old a gun and then leave it lying around the house, unattended and loaded.

Who could possibly have seen this coming?

To me this Cricket rifle seems like a bad idea all around.

For one thing it looks like a toy.

And for another it seems to me that if you are not old enough to hold an actual adult size rifle, perhaps you are not old enough to be trusted to understand just how deadly this weapons really is.

But that is almost beside the point, since the real fault for this unfortunate incident lies with the parents who left a loaded weapon in a houseful of children, within easy access.

How THAT is not considered neglect I don't really understand.

Though perhaps if you live in Kentucky, on Lawson's Bottom Road, the parenting standards are somewhat more lax than in other parts of the country.

Update: Well it looks like Alaska has its own version of this tragedy.

Finally a little good news. Rifle scope manufacturer to provide kits to take the Jesus references off of their products.

A US firm sought to quiet a controversy over coded Biblical references inscribed on gunsights used by US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan Thursday, announcing it was providing the military with kits to remove them.

Muslim and religious freedom groups have reacted angrily after it emerged that Trijicon has contracts to supply over 800,000 of the gunsights to the US military.

Critics charged that the company was putting US troops in danger in Muslim-majority nations where the US military presence is already bitterly resented.

The Wixom, Michigan company said it has inscribed references to the New Testament on the metal casings of its gunsights for over two decades.

But it said it would supply the military with 100 kits "to enable
the removal of the references that are already on products that are currently deployed."

See? Sometimes the good guys DO win. Not nearly as often as they should, but sometimes.
