The government will bend the rules left and right to harass targeted taxpayers, conservative patriots, selected journalists, etc., but it will strictly exercise inconsistent and subjective rules to deny a child a shot at life. After that she links to this truly heartbreaking story about a young girl in Philadelphia who desperately needs a new lung, but due to policies in place is only in line to receive a child's young but not in line to receive an adult lung if one becomes available.
In this hospital there are three other children just as sick and also in need of a lung transplant, and if an exception were made, and this little girl was put on the adult list, she would jump ahead of 40 adult patients also waiting for a lung transplant.
Now look as a parent I find this story incredibly upsetting and if I were this girl's parents I would be moving heaven and earth to save my child, and begging for preferential treatment to save her life, because THAT IS WHAT PARENTS DO!
I do not fault he parents at all.
However for Sarah Palin to take this and turn it into an opportunity to attack the administration is incredibly low, especially since what she is suggesting is to do the EXACT thing that he accused the Affordable Care Act of doing!
This was how Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius responded about this case:

Get it? She said that the medical experts at the hospital make those decisions, NOT the Obama administration of government types. So IF she intervened as the parents are asking her to do, she would be moving this little girl to the top of the list and essentially moving everybody else down a slot.
Now correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't THAT be the government choosing who lived or died, due to political pressure rather than following the guidelines that are in place to provide equal access to care for all?
And isn't THAT the very definition of the "death panels" that Sarah Palin warned all of America about?

Even if all that could be accomplished, the average cost of a transplant in 2011, for a child like this 10-year old, would be approximately $800.000.00. Thus the government intervention that Palin has previously condemned is the very care that she now asserts is wrongfully being denied to this child. Moreover cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder so it would be a preexisting condition that would likely not be covered by traditional insurance. Thus a lung transplant wouldn’t be available to almost any child if Sarah Palin were responsible for governing American children.
However the degree of ignorance of the issues presented in this matter is astonishing, even for Sarah Palin. Let me count the ways:

ReplyDeleteBut, people get sick and sometimes die. There are many children who need organ transplants who have died waiting. When the haters of this administration get any and every chance, everything bad that happens to people is blamed on President Obama.
Sickness and disease happen to anyone. And those on a waiting list are in a lottery and whoever gets picked as the right candidate, wins. It's unfair that those not picked weren't the right candidates with the right blood types. But that is life.

She could contribute money to lung foundations for research and she could passionately work towards that goal in many capacities.
She could close her yap on facebook and make a contribution to society by stop dividing and conquering for attention. She could place herself in other people's shoes. She could show compassion and use common sense and reasoning and stop BLAMING others for all the human suffering.
She could stop pretending she believes in some perfect utopia. She could depend on God a little more if she really had faith. She could offer some solutions to Ms. Sebellius. She could suggest that the medical doctors operate for free when there is a child whose parents don't have adequate insurance coverage. She could go on a campaign RIGHT NOW to inform people to sign their donor cards, which might save a little child's life.
The only reason that these poor parents are in this human trial is because sh!t happens and that's life. Sarah trying to twist this into an opportunity for her to shill and squeal about her perceived enemies is about the lowest lowest level that a person can go. And her latest rant will expose the truly nasty person she is.
If she REALLY wanted to do something positive for a worthwhile cause, she could have stepped up years ago and become an advocate for kids with Down Syndrome.

There are many young children in America who are going through similar medical crises. They too are waiting for lungs, hearts and other organs. There has to be some fairness in the process. Like everything else that she touches, she makes it ugly. Why not use her platform to urge everyone to be an organ donor and show her organ donor card? Sarah has picked the wrong fight. Normally, she wants to keep government out of the decision made between the patient and the doctor-- except when it comes to a woman's reproductive health or a child whose parents want to move the child to the front of the transplant list.
ReplyDeleteSarah has picked part of our national health care system that she and the Republicans should be against, a nationalized data base of patients' health records. In this case, the list of people waiting for an organ transplant ARE part of a national data base, administered by the United Network for Organ Sharing.(It was established during Reagan's term of office). It is a way to make all of the donated organs available to the largest number of people who need them, and thanks to the computer, it is easier to find a match and a qualified doctor and institution for the transplant.
There is also a rating system established by this organization. The parents are very concerned about their child. We all are. But there are few pediatric lungs available and they do not transplant adult lungs into a child's body. The transplant will not cure the child's cystic fibrosis.
The transplant list is based both on critical need and the best chances of survival. People who participate in the program agree to be evaluated this way. And, we haven't even mentioned how much of the child's operation will be covered by insurance. If Sarah doesn't like it, she has millions of dollars. Let her pay for the kid to fly to another country where a lung can be easily procured and transplanted, for a fee. In fact, Sarah's PAC could pay for the whole thing as a political stunt. Or else, Sarah should bring in all of her religious zealots, the prayer warriors. Maybe they can finally get the first miracle required to nominate Sarah for sainthood.
There are "workarounds" re: the transplant list. If you're rich enough and have connections and are in need of a kidney transplant, they have "cruises" to India, where people, usually women, sell a kidney for a bargain price of five to ten grand. Others, like this child and heart patients don't have that option.

We have similar guidelines in the US. There was a case in Florida in 2008 where a child was born just after 21 months and was only treated because doctors thought she was older. From what I read, preemies born that early have only a one percent chance of survival and likely to have severe disabilities even with medical treatment. In other words, those decisions aren't just being made where there is national health care. But I guess it's your strategy to tell only half the story

DeleteHere's the thing: in 2008, it was usually the INSURANCE COMPANIES that decided who got treated, how long, with what - and if it could be done cheaper, by all means, that is how they wanted it done. Because it wasn't just about healthcare, but corporate profit.
You had to check if your doctor / dentist etc. was in network, you had to notify them if you needed to go into the hospital. You needed to know if they'd cover the expensive medication your doctor said that you really needed (and often, the doctors medication was "over-ruled"), or if they were only willing to pay on the generic. Not all generics are equal. Thyroid medication is a good example. So is transplant medication.
Have you ever had to do battle with an insurance company to get bills paid? Insurance companies are in the business to MAKE PROFITS and make money for their shareholders. When they pay on claims, that is less profit for the shareholders and the Board of Directors bonuses.
When treatment is denied, most of the time it is because the insurance company refuses to authorize insurance payments for that treatment.
Insurance company review boards are the ORIGINAL "Death Panels."

It got mentioned because Rahm Emmanuel's brother was on one of the panels. He is a medical ethicist. The group was working up protocols to assist medical personnel make decisions in organ transplant cases where you have more people needing organs than organs available. The current example is a tragic situation, but there are also others waiting. I agree that the medical experts have to be the ones making the decisions, tough as those decisions are. Meanwhile, if you aren't listed on your driver's license as an organ donor, do something!

How about when Sarah was governor of Alaska. She didn't approve additional Medicare funds for several hundred Alaskan senior citizens and many of them died because they had no way to pay for treatment. I would say that Sarah knows a lot about death panels. She is the "queen of death panels!" As governor, she was a "death panel of one!" I remember when this came out in the newspaper right after or before she resigned.

A federal judge ruled this afternoon that the young girl in need of a lung transplant can be added to the adult donor list, granting the family’s request for a temporary restraining order on the Health and Human Services “Under 12″ rule that prevents children under the age of 12, like Murnaghan, from being eligible to receive a lung transplant from an adult.
Murnaghan has been hospitalized for several months at a Philadelphia hospital, suffering from end-stage cystic fibrosis. Her story grabbed national headlines when, with the help of several lawmakers, the family implored Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to grant a stay in the law and help the dying girl receive a lung transplant.
Sebelius told the family on Tuesday that she cannot intervene in such transplant decisions, and cited similar cases in the same hospital which would make it inappropriate for her to grant an exception if she had the ability to do so. The federal judge who ruled in favor of the Murnaghans has said he will grant the temporary restraining order to any other child in the same judicial district who brings their case before the court.
