"The administration now projects that the statutory debt limit, currently $8.184 trillion, will be reached in mid-February 2006," Snow said in a letter to 21 members of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate released by Treasury after financial markets had closed.

Snow said that Treasury, if the debt limit was not raised by then, would have to take "extraordinary actions" to keep paying its bills for everything from
Social Security to national defense spending.

Even if Treasury took "all available prudent and legal actions to avoid breaching the statutory debt limit, we anticipate that we can finance government operations no longer than mid-March."

This is the point that many right wingers do not seem to understand when they talk about the big picture and how important it is to be successful in Iraq and Afghanistan. This president does not understand money! He continues to spend like one of Donald Trumps martini swilling ex-wives and then refuses to raise taxes, choosing instead to borrow from countries all over the world, many of which are fairly poor themselves.

I cannot help but ask where are the fiscally conservative Republicans? I have heard talk of condemnation from the Right concerning spending in the past from the Clinton administration, but clearly Clinton never came anywhere close to spending at this level! And don't throw out that old argument about a war going on and different circumstances.

We have waged wars in the past. But those presidents knew that they had to pay for it! They raised taxes and sold war bonds and Americans were asked to make sacrifices here at home. Either George Bush is completely out of touch with reality or he just does not care about the monstrous debt he is leaving to our children! Could it be that he really does expect the Rapture to arrive and remove him from this mortal coil? Admittedly that seems extreme but so does our situation.
