Can America save the World? Does the World want us to?

It seems that much of my recent information concerning my misperceptions on the Iraq war are being filtered through a rather vocal minority.

I am also somewhat surprised to learn that, while the vocalizations are loud and strident, the commitment is somewhat lacking.

The idea that we can run around the world on our white horse defending Human Rights Violations everywhere that we find them is admirable. But is it practical?

Admittedly I am a big softy especially when it comes to children and if I possessed the power or resources I would save as many children, and their parents, as I could. I do try to do my part here at home. When I read about abuses in other countries I want my country to do something. But what is that something? Do I think we should go and depose their leaders and set up our own type of government to ensure the safety of the populace? Not so much.

I am aware that there are people suffering in Darfur and China, as well as many other countries. But I have to ask how much more can the United States give before our own people begin to suffer. We saw with Katrina that there are many holes that exist in our ability to care for the people in this country. We must balance our desire to ensure the safety of people in other countries with our ability to meet our own needs here at home.

George Bush has managed to create a situation where we find ourselves having to make tough choices about not losing face, and maintaining our strength in the world, with our need to care for the least amongst our own community. We cannot continue to spend money that we do not have!

Our national debt stands at an unbelievable $8,179,387,199,380.65. (check my facts here)

We cannot continue to dig ourselves into this giant pit or else we risk losing, not just our ability to care for ourselves, but our ability to defend ourselves in the event of another attack. If George Bush had spent all of the money spent in Iraq on our security could you imagine what might have been accomplished?

    I checked your facts.

    You are completely wrong.

    That's the national DEBT.

By the way, do you know what the GDP of the U.S. is?

    Try $11,750,000,000,000 per year.

Well, lots more dead Iraqis for a start. And Israel would be the only democracy in the Middle East. Saddam Hussein would still be funding Palestinian terrorists. Is that the sort of thing you were after?

  4. How about Here? or at at CNN? This is absolutely NOT new news. It was well known before we went in.

"Meanwhile, Saddam is working hard to undercut international support for a U.S. attack on him by deploying his diplomatic weapons. He has found a rich issue to exploit in the Palestinian crisis and has made it a constant theme. His offer of $25,000 to the family of every suicide bomber and every Palestinian family made homeless by the Israeli assault last month on a refugee camp in the West Bank city of Jenin has won wide admiration at home and in the larger Arab world. He is showing muscle in the oil market with his 30-day moratorium on Iraqi oil sales to protest Israel's aggression. He has burnished his reputation as the one Arab leader who says no to Washington and stands up against Israel."

(The above is from the CNN link.
