The group used an atmosphere-ocean coupled climate model known as GISS Model E-R to simulate the climate impact of a massive freshwater flood into the North Atlantic that happened about 8,200 years ago after the end of the last Ice Age. As retreating glaciers opened a route for two ancient meltwater lakes known as Agassiz and Ojibway to suddenly and catastrophically drain from the middle of the North American continent.
This is pretty good confirmation of what biblical scholars have been saying all along. There are actually many other cultures that talk of a great flood. It has long been accepted by many scientists that there were probably many substantial floods, some of which could have been the inspiration for the great flood in the Bible. This one seems like the one that would have had the most dramatic effect, and therefore the one that would have been repeated in the oral histories that were passed from generation to generation.
So Creationists can rejoice that the much reviled science is actually lending credibility to what they have been saying all along. However there is one sticking point.
As all good Creationists know the Earth is only 6,000 years old. This research claims that the climate altering flood took place 8,200 years ago. Now we could assume that these scientists just have poor math skills or we can realize that the claims of the Creationists just do not fit in with the evidence found on the planet we live on. I am going to have to side with the scientists on this one.
Better luck next time.
Most creationists do not strictly place the age of the earth at 6000 years... they estimate 10000 to 6000 and most lean toward the age of 10000 rather than 6000.
