A judge on Tuesday dismissed all charges against a teenager accused of conspiring to murder her mother, saying evidence offered during Rachelle Waterman's mistrial last month suggests police coerced apparently incriminating statements from the Craig honor student.
The 17-year-old Waterman was charged with murder and six other counts for allegedly conspiring with two former boyfriends to kill her mother in November 2004. The two 24-year-old men confessed to the murder, saying they believed they were carrying out the girl's wishes. They are scheduled to be sentenced Thursday.
I don't usually write about criminal cases here in Alaska, but this one is all over our media and I have strong opinions on it. In the first place I think that this little girl is guilty as hell. She seduced these two pathetic excuses for men to kidnap and kill her mother and when her mother first disappeared she demonstrated no emotion or show any concern. Her defense that she did not know they were doing it does not ring true to me at all.
I have worked with some very damaged children and she demonstrates some definite signs of sociopathic behavior. In my opinion she still poses a threat to her community and needs to either be incarcerated or placed in a mental health facility.
When I watched her court case on television, I watched as she interacted with her defense attorney and it was clear that she was using immature seduction techniques to gain his trust. She was trying to manipulate him with touches on his arm, loving gazes, and always smiling whenever he spoke to her. And this was all happening while she was on trial for having her mother killed, and her body burned! She demonstrated no sign that she was mourning or suffering emotionally at all. To me it appeared these were practiced techniques which I am sure whe used to get these to morons to do her dirty work. If she ultimately gets off it will be a travesty of justice.
