Worshippers at a famous shrine in an upmarket shopping district of Bangkok beat a 27-year-old man to death yesterday after he destroyed a statue of a Hindu deity with a hammer.
Thanakorn Pakdeepol, who police said had a history of mental illness, was killed by worshippers after he broke into the Erawan shrine and used a hammer to shatter a four-headed statue of Brahma.
Wow! Killing a mentally ill person, that is a peaceful religion!
Hi! I was just cruising around, and I happened across your site. I like it! Just thought I would let you know that. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteHi Gryphen,
ReplyDeleteFirst, the people who killed them were Buddhists, not Hindus (Buddhism is the majority religion in Thailand, also read the BBC article I link below).
Second, how does a single isolated incident of crime prove the Hindus or Buddhists are intolerant. It is not like the killers justified their acts based on some religious scriptures and the government supported it. For god's sake it was two sweepers (janitors) who comitted the crime and who probably did not even know that he was mentally insane. Read this BBC article, it has more details: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4827660.stm
No, I absolutely do not condone the crime, but jumping to generalizations from isolated events (which are not even comitted by the religious group you want to blame) does not make you look good.
