While publicly advocating diplomacy to stop Iran from pursuing a nuclear weapon, Hersh reports in the next issue of The New Yorker magazine that "there is a growing conviction among members of the United States military, and in the international community, that President Bush's ultimate goal in the nuclear confrontation with Iran is regime change".
I know that this article relies almost solely on Seymour Hersh and that it has already been covered on this site, but I truly believe that this story needs to stay in the foreground as much as possible. Seymour Hersh is a very capable reporter who is often the first to press with a story that then gets fleshed out by other news outlets. I have no reason to doubt his accuracy concerning this story either.
This all fits in with what we know to be true about George W. Bush. He truly believes he is playing some huge part in God's plan, and that that plan has to do with a great battle with the Islamic regime. Make no mistake. Our President sees this as a holy war. You would have to be blind not to see that this is what has been planned since the beginning of this administraton and that they have been moving toward this insane goal from the very first day.
Bush is an evangelical who believes that we are at the end of days. God is coming and the war with Islam is part of the prophecies. Bush feels that he is a called by God to make this happen.
I know this sounds insane. It is insane. And it took me a long time to recognize what all of the evidence was pointing to. I pride myself on being a rational person and these are irrational conclusions. But look below and see how my confidence has been eroded.
- I could not imagine that in this day and age somebody could still cling to these primitive beliefs. But they do.
- Then I could not believe that his advisors would allow him to go down this road. But they did.
- Then I could not imagine that the Congress would not put a stop to it. But they didn't.
- Then I could not accept the fact that the Pentagon would implement these plans knowing how devastating the outcome would be. But they have.
I just re-read the above post and it scares me. It frightens me to think that one man, with a messianic complex, could do this much damage in just five short years. But we can see the evidence. Our government is supposed to protect our country from these types of suicidal leaders plunging our country into the abyss. But our country is broken. Do we have enough time left to fix it?
