Principal bars student from singing Pink's song "Dear Mr. President". Censorship is alive and well in Florida.

A 10-year-old Coral Springs girl won't be allowed to sing a controversial President Bush-bashing ballad at her school talent show after her principal deemed it inappropriate and too political.

The song, Dear Mr. President, performed and co-written by the singer Pink, criticizes the president for the war in Iraq and other policies, including his stance on gay rights.

Parent Nancy Shoul says her daughter Molly should be lauded for choosing lyrics that are full of substance rather than pop music fluff. She said the principal's ban sends a bad message and violates her daughter's right to free speech.

"If this was a student singing a pro-administration song, no one would quibble with it," Shoul said. "The principal is just running scared and doesn't want to upset any parents."

This president should be fired. Pussy!

We should be encouraging our children to express their feelings about what is going on in the world today. We bitch constantly about how kids are just too self involved, and then when one shows some interest and understanding of world affairs this is how we treat her?

You know the crap that is going on today is going to have a deterimental effect on these children for years to come. We are breaking the world and then handing it to them to fix. They have every right to weigh in now rather then later.

I think the music lessons in schools around the country should consist of the following songs:

  • "Eve of Destruction" by Barry McGuire
  • "Fortunate Son" by Creedence Clearwater Revival
  • "One Tin Soldier" from "The Legend of Billy Jack"
  • "Blowing in the wind" by Bob Dylan
  • "He ain't heavy, he's my brother" by B. Scott and B. Russell
  • "The times they are a changing" by Bob Dylan
  • "Where have all the flowers gone?" by Pete Seeger

And of course Pink's song as well. These kids are our future and since we were too fucking stupid to learn our lesson from the Vietnam war we owe it to these kids to help them learn from this terrible war.
