Army officer refuses to go to Iraq. Anybody blame him?

An Army officer who was born and raised in Honolulu is refusing to go with his unit to Iraq because he says the basis of the war is illegal and immoral.

"I feel that we have been lied to and betrayed by this administration," Watada said Tuesday in a telephone interview with the Seattle Times from Fort Lewis. "It is the duty, the obligation of every soldier, and specifically the officers, to evaluate the legality, the truth behind every order — including the order to go to war."

At a time when there are many allegations that our troops are killing innocent Iraqi's and Afghans is it any wonder that a soldier might feel that he would be asked to perform an act that he finds morally repugnant?

He is right. The war is both illegal and immoral. He is a brave man to stand against a policy that so many of his fellow soldiers have gone along with despite whatever reservations they might have felt.

I assume he will be punished by our government and called a traitor. From this administration that is a badge of honor.
