The Central Intelligence Agency has closed a unit that for a decade had the mission of hunting Osama bin Laden and his top lieutenants, intelligence officials confirmed Monday.
The unit, known as Alec Station, was disbanded late last year and its analysts reassigned within the C.I.A. Counterterrorist Center, the officials said.
The decision is a milestone for the agency, which formed the unit before Osama bin Laden became a household name and bolstered its ranks after the Sept. 11 attacks, when President Bush pledged to bring Mr. bin Laden to justice "dead or alive."
Well I guess the argument could be made that the unit did not seem to get very close to accomplishing their goal. But on the other hand what kind of message does this send to the terrorists about our dedication to getting Bin laden "dead or alive".
This administration has never seemed serious about finding Bin Laden. They let him escape in Bora Bora and he continues to communicate with his followers at will.
Bush needs Osama, and Osama needs Bush.
That is why Bin Laden released that tape right before the 2004 elections. He wanted to make sure that the dumbest American possible remained his adversary.
So the boogeyman is still out there, and we just have to learn to accept that.
