He is the Democrats best possible candidate for 2008. And here is one of the main reasons why:
His wife, Elizabeth, was diagnosed with breast cancer the day after the election. "We just threw ourselves into it," he recalls. "I went with Elizabeth to every chemo test." The twin traumas—losing a national election and watching a spouse suffer—were an enormous emotional load. But Elizabeth's illness helped Edwards keep the election loss in perspective. "The adjustment wasn't that hard," he says, "because I was so focused on getting her well."
I know it seems creepy to talk about the illness of a candidate as being a positive thing. But it is and here is why; would a man of such compassion let children go hungry? Would he cut spending on social programs? Would he send our young men and women to die in an unnecessary war? No, he would not.
We may not be sure of who John Kerry is behind the public persona, which seems to be constantly shifting. We should be very suspicious of the political chess game that Hillary is clearly playing. But John Edward's heart has been seen by all of us.
His compassion is obvious. What could the Republicans really do to diminish him? Would they attack his time as a lawyer again? Would they hold the fact that he got huge payouts for his clients against giant corporations against him? Would you? Do any of us feel sorry for big business these days?
No, John Edwards is Don Quixote. He can sit on a beaten up donkey and ride it into battle like it was a noble steed. He can slay the dragon of the Republican party with a southern drawl and true ethics and morality. He is the real deal. He is not a manufactured pretty boy, slicked up and sent out to charm the voters. John Edwards is our best hope.
If the Democrats want to guarantee a victory in 2008, they better get started on supporting John Edwards. Period.
Agreed! i've got my fingers crossed for a john edwards-rfk jr dream ticket. They're both the real thing! and I'm so glad to see Stevens doesn't represent all alaskans. D.K.
