England finally recognizes that it is Christians that are screwing up this planet. The Buddhists smugly nod their heads in agreement.

"I think Christian theology is a bit to blame here," says Claire Foster, the Church of England's environment policy adviser.

"Genesis talks about God giving man dominion over the animals and nature. There was an idea (in Victorian England) that it wasn't just that we had a right, but that we had a God-given duty to exploit nature for the sake of man. That's a kind of bad theology. If you look at the story of Adam and Eve and the job that Adam was given before he ate the apple, before the fall, it was to till and keep the garden."

Descartes is also to blame, says Foster, for proposing that humans are distinct from the rest of the universe: that the universe was inert matter to be controlled and used for humans. Darwin and his theory of evolution, she says, put mankind back into the play.

"That is the theory of evolution, isn't it, that we are deeply interconnected with the whole of nature?"

Possibly the most dangerous idea proffered by any religion is the belief that the planet was created for them and therefore they may do whatever they want with it without any consequences befalling them. It is the sort of belief that is dreamed up by a primitive people who have no understanding of how the world works and therefore believe everything that they observe is a miracle.

In today's world we can no longer afford to be so self centered. We are destroying this rock and we have do not have the technology to flee it as it crumbles beneath our feet.

To put it bluntly, if we don't implement some dramatic changes we are fucked!
