Why the Libby case is historically important.

People will soon forget the details of the Lewis "Scooter" Libby case, if they knew them in the first place.

Whether the vice president's former chief of staff gets 25 years in prison or even a presidential pardon after his conviction Tuesday for lying and obstructing justice is of little consequence to most Americans.

What will endure is damning testimony that confirms the public's worst fears about the Bush administration's behavior during the lead-up to the war in Iraq and its truthfulness since then.
The monthlong trial established beyond a reasonable doubt that White House officials at the highest level conducted a campaign to discredit those who questioned their declarations about Iraq's weapon capabilities -- declarations that turned out to be wrong.

This article makes an excellent point and one that the rest of the media seems to be dancing around.

We were lied to! The administration had access to information that said that Saddam Hussein did not have any weapons of mass destruction or plans to create any more of them. They knew full well that Saddam did not present a danger to us at that time. Yet they still felt compelled to engage him and his country in an unnecessary war. Every death that resulted, on both sides, was a waste of human potential.

And when Joe Wilson dared to point out that the evidence that they were pointing to was incorrect, they attacked him in the most egregious way imaginable. They went after his family.

Shit even the Mafia leaves the family alone.

No this administration assassinated his character, and destroyed his wife's career so that they could continue toward making the biggest mistake in American military history. Joe Wilson tried to save them and us from this blunder, and he was not alone. There were others whose voices were shouted down and whose careers were threatened. This is how the Bush administration deals with information that does not match what they want to believe.

And it continues to this day.

Global warming, Iran's intentions, the impossibility of success in Iraq, all of these are being interpreted by this administration within a framework of what they choose to believe. And what they choose to try and make us believe.

If the Libby trial tells us anything, it tells us that this White House will stop at nothing to further their agenda. No matter how destructive that is to our country and to the rest of the world.
