The monthly death toll in Iraq rose 15 percent in March, an official revealed Sunday, as insurgents and sectarian militias continue to defy a military crackdown in Baghdad.
At least 2,078 Iraqi civilians, policemen and soldiers died nationwide, 272 more than in February, and grim news for the crackdown launched six weeks ago and billed as a last chance to wrest back control of Baghdad.
I am sure that this is not the method that the Bush administration will use to measure the effectiveness of this new strategy.
"It is not how many more Iraqi's are being killed, it is about convincing as many reporters as possible to report that we are being successful".
I just saw today that John "the surge is working" McCain and Lindsay Graham, along with a few other Republican Senators are in Iraq right now saying that things are getting better.
Senator Graham said that he purchased three new rugs, as if buying knick knacks from the Iraqis who feel safe enough to open their stores with the Senator's security forces lining the streets somehow proves that the surge is saving Baghdad.
As if we haven't seen a photo-op before.
