With teachers like this is it any wonder that I am as unconventional as I am?

Fifty miles northwest of Alaska's largest city, the roadless hills and boggy swamps of the Yentna River Valley have for years hidden the secret of bear man Charlie Vandergaw.

What goes on each summer at Vandergaw's remote homestead is so far from the ordinary as to be almost unbelievable. Visitors tell of him petting black and brown bears, playing with grizzly cubs while sows stand by, sitting on bears and teaching them tricks. His own photographs show even more. They capture him easing to within feet of breeding grizzlies and nursing an injured brown bear.

Charlie Vandergaw was my high school science teacher. He was a great guy whose identical twin brother, Glen Vandergaw my math teacher, was his polar opposite. Charlie was a great guy who loved talking about science and used to come into the weight room, where I spent much of my after school time, and always bench press exactly ten more pounds then I could bench. He did that many times, no matter how strong I became he always lifted just ten extra pounds never letting on just how strong he actually was.

I had teachers who raised dog sled teams, some were ex-Olympic athletes, and others spent their summers on fishing boats braving the most dangerous seas in the world. They were some very colorful people and they gave me an eclectic and interesting education, which I still treasure.

I have not seen Charlie in almost thirty years now, it is nice to see that he is still teaching us all something.

Ah you must have gone to Dimond when I was there as well. Knowing Mr.Vandergaw this story in the ADN did not shock me at all...

I do agree... It's nice to see he's still teaching us all something - for better or worse anyway. What a guy!

So go visit him and tell him how much you appreciated his influence on your early years.

You never know when that chance will be gone.

First off, Charlie didn't have an identical brother, Glenn was almost exactly two years younger butthey were very different in personality. I should know.

    Charlie's other brother.

  5. Oops. I apologize for my mistake. But the entire time that I went to Dimond everybody that I knew thought that the Vandergaws were twins. And they certainly were very similar in appearance. At least during the years that I knew them.

But I am sorry for getting the facts wrong. And thanks for the clarification.

No problem, I just thought people should know the real situation. They were aware of what people thought and enjoyed playing their game. Both Charles and Glenn (now deceased) were my older brothers. They spent a significant amount of their adult lives working and playing together and Glenn had a significant influence in the Bear Farm as a co-owner for several years.

My thing is deer. I have a first name relationship with about 25 and know some record book Black Tail very well.

I also attended Dimond in 1986 and had Mr Vandergaw (yep, still gotta call him "Mister") for chemistry... Was very surprised to see him with the bears but not sure why I'm surprised, he was always sort of unconventional. Hope he stays safe (at least relatively speaking) and enjoys his unique living arrangements. Good luck if you're reading this Mr G! :)

I just finished watching a special on Charlie's Bear Heaven and was very impressed with his ability to interact with the bear's.
I also understand why the Alaska Fish and Game had to do what did.
I now hope that the courts see it within their wisdom to suspend all penalities that might came of the court action against Charlie.
