Iran and US blame each other for failed talks. Who do you believe?

A second round of talks between American and Iranian diplomats produced scant evidence of progress or common ground on Tuesday, with each side emerging to blame the other for hindering progress on security in Iraq.

Ryan C. Crocker, the American ambassador to Iraq, reiterated accusations that Iran was providing weapons and training for Shiite militias to attack American-led forces in Iraq, while his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Kazemi-Qumi, countered that Iraqis were “victimized by terror and the presence of foreign forces” in their country.

Now this clearly illustrates one of the main things I just hate about the Bush administration. When my government and another government, who has a history of anti-American activities, argue about who is being honest I want to believe that MY government is the honest one.

But I don't!

I am not prone to believing the Iranian government about much of anything. But when they tell a story that is the opposite of the one that the Bush administration is putting forward, I find them much more trustworthy. And this makes me feel unpatriotic for not trusting my own government.

But how can I? I am no Pollyanna, I know that governments regularly lie to their citizens, but this is ridiculous!

Every single time we hear a version of events from this government that is disputed by another source it turns out our government is found to have been lying. Whether it is the Jessica Lynch fiasco, the Pat Tillman episode, the constant denials that Iraq is in a civil war, the denials that there was any internal disagreement about the domestic spying program, or when we have been told that the war against terrorism has made al-Qaeda weaker, I could go on and on for pages if I wanted to. The lies are never ending!

So in this situation I just don't know who to believe. But I have to say that I seriously doubt that Iran is as involved with Iraqi terrorists as this White House wants us to believe. There may have been some independent Iranians helping to train or supply weapons to terrorists but I am not going to swallow the fact that the Iranian government is actively training them to attack Americans.

That just does not pass the smell test for me.

  1. Even if Iran is involved, so what? The Chinese armed the North Vietnamese and we didn't declare war on China. Besides, I'm sure some American arms dealers are shipping weapons to both sides.
