As Jane Mayer told National Public Radio on August 6, what she found in the leaked Red Cross report, and through her own extensive research on our interrogators (who are cheered on by the commander in chief), is "a top-down-controlled, mechanistic, regimented program of abuse that was signed off on—at the White House, really—and then implemented at the CIA from the top levels all the way down. . . . They would put people naked for up to 40 days in cells where they were deprived of any kind of light. They would cut them off from any sense of what time it was or . . . anything that would give them a sense of where they were."
She also told of the CIA interrogation of Abu Zubaydah, who was not only waterboarded (a technique in which he was made to feel that he was about to be drowned) but also "kept in . . . a small cage, about one meter [39.7 inches] by one meter, in which he couldn't stand up for a long period of time. [The CIA] called it the dog box."
I have said before that I am not going to be satisfied with impeachment (though that would be a very necessary first step), I want this government to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
I want a message sent to the world, and our future leaders, that America does not condone or engage in these types of behaviors.
I want to let the world to know that this is an aberration, and will never be tolerated again.
I want the American voters to be exposed to just how much damage this administration has done to our reputation in the world, so that the next time they get the chance to vote, they do so with their eyes wide open with the realization that whoever they choose must be one of the most competent, intellectual Americans that we could possibly put in office.
Most of us who have been raised in this country have heard repeatedly that "anybody can grow up to be President of the United States", but I think we can now see that not everybody "should" be able to become the President of the United States.
It is an extremely important responsibility that only the most gifted people should even try to take on. People like Barack Obama, and John Edwards, and Bill Richards. Those are, in my opinion, the cream of the current crop.
Amen!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind words at Enigma's place. I wish I were an American. But I am not.
Have you ever asked, why Americans are not as brave as say the chinese, who braved the TANKS in fighting their dictator government?
I think that we were very slow to wake up to what had happened in our country. There are still many, many Americans who do not see just how terrible things have become.
ReplyDeleteThe administration has been very adept at spinning the information their way. Too many of us do not want to believe that our leaders are corrupt, or evil, or insane. And George Bush is all three!
