U.S. drops out of Human Rights Council.

The news that the US has completely withdrawn from the Human Rights Council spread like wildfire Friday afternoon (June 6) through the corridors of the Palais des Nations in Geneva. There was general consternation amongst diplomats and NGOS. Reached by phone, the American mission in Geneva neither confirmed nor denied the report. Although unofficial, the news comes at a time of long opposition by the Bush administration to the reforms which created the Human Rights Council in June 2006. Washington announced from the beginning that the US would not be an active member but its observer status would mean that it could intervene during the sessions. To date even this has rarely happened.

“We don’t understand the reasons nor the timing of the decision”, said Sebastien Gillioz of Human Rights Watch. “There have even been some positive signs during this Council. For example Belarus was not re-elected as a member in 2007 nor Sri Lanka this year”.

“It is an aberration”, said Peter Splinter of Amnesty International. “It seems that the government has lost its mind. How could it believe it is going to improve human rights by running away? It is like those who say, ‘I don’t like the way this town is governed so I’m not going to vote’”.

The Bush administration simply cannot understand what all of the hoopla about human rights is about.

I mean to them it is simple. If you are an American that makes you human, and that gives you rights. That is until the government needs to make sure you are not secretly against them and then they get to spy on you.

They also get to manipulate and lie to you, but don't worry it is for your own good and you are just to under educated to really understand it.

And to keep you stupid the Bush administration created "No Child Left Behind". You are welcome.

Now if you are not an American you are not that important, unless of course you are sitting on a giant pool of oil. In that case we will give you a bunch of weapons, and by "give you" we mean shoot them at you. Then we will stir up racial and religious anger so that you can fight amongst yourselves while we figure out some way to get that oil out of your country. You are welcome.

Now we are also your friend if you happen to live on an site that has a great deal of importance to our dominant religious belief. So we will give you a lot of weapons, this time we will just ship them to you, so that you can defend yourself against your neighbors. Then we will agitate these neighbors of yours so that the two of you can fight, and then we can swoop in and get the oil that your neighbors are living over. Oh and the battle is also important because our dominant religion believes it will usher in the return of Jesus. Both you and Jesus are welcome.

  1. This is so pitiful - but let's face it, Bush probably doesn't want anyone digging too much into our own human rights record.

  2. Until the United States reaffirms its commitment to human rights by closing gitmo, all the secret prisions and unambiguously renounces torture as a tool by ANY US agency, I'm happy to see it leave the Council. It was our position that rights abusers shouldn't be on it. So in a twisted way we're showing a tiny sample of moral leadership by abandoning the council.

Once we do clean up our act after Obama is elected, I hope we will return and lobby for other rights abusers to be tossed from the council.
