Four Republicans close to Palin said she has decided increasingly to disregard the advice of the former Bush aides tasked to handle her, creating occasionally tense situations as she travels the country with them. Those Palin supporters, inside the campaign and out, said Palin blames her handlers for a botched rollout and a tarnished public image -- even as others in McCain's camp blame the pick of the relatively inexperienced Alaska governor, and her public performance, for McCain's decline.
"She's lost confidence in most of the people on the plane," said a senior Republican who speaks to Palin, referring to her campaign jet. He said Palin had begun to "go rogue" in some of her public pronouncements and decisions.
Anger among Republicans who see Palin as a star and as a potential future leader has boiled over because, they say, they see other senior McCain aides preparing to blame her in the event he is defeated.
"These people are going to try and shred her after the campaign to divert blame from themselves," said a McCain insider, referring to McCain's chief strategist, Steve Schmidt, and to Nicolle Wallace, a former Bush aide who has taken a lead role in Palin's campaign.
Reporters really began to notice the change last Sunday, when Palin strolled over to a local television crew in Colorado Springs.
"Get Tracey," a staffer called out, according to The New York Times, summoning spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt, who reportedly "tried several times to cut it off with a terse 'Thank you!' in between questions, to no avail."
I am sorry is it Christmas? I thought it was still only October, how can so many gifts be coming my way?
Sarah Palin has decided to bite the hand that plucked her from obscurity in the wilds of Wasilla and to start speaking for herself? With no script? With no kindly old grandfather sitting next to her to correct her when she says something stupid?
Well if she wants to start answering questions for herself, and possibly face "Meet the Press" or "60 Minutes", or Anderson Cooper on her own then all I have to say is, let her! Please, oh please, let her!
Update: If you want the 411 on how John McCain got saddled with this albatross, the New Yorker has the whole sordid story for you here. (And many thanks to my friend Jean for bringing this story to my attention.)
Gryphen,
ReplyDeleteI just read an article in the latest New Yorker
(you can find it here: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/10/27/081027fa_fact_mayer) which makes me realize that she's not as much of an 'outsider' as she'd like everyone to believe. Although she may not have knowledge of the real issues, when it comes to playing politics, she's no dummy. I'd venture to say that she's finding people to blame for the loss in 2008, in order to set herself up for 2012. Because, as we know from her behavior here, she's never to blame for what goes wrong. Very canny, scary canny.
Jean
Then I guess it is up to us to stop her.
ReplyDeleteCNN just reported the story and I couldn't help but think "She's gettin all "mavericky".
ReplyDeleteTheir campaigni is done.
Palin has ratched-up the socialism, communism rhetoric. Wow, she's dumber than I thought.
ReplyDeleteWe'll be watching to see that she reduces all taxes in Alaska, pay back every dime of per-diem and her family's expenses, reduce her paycheck and the size of government, and of course, give back the earmarks. Plus, she has to provide gas to the lower 48.
Is it true that Alaska'a largest newspaper just endorsed....Obama?
