A jury has found U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens guilty of all seven counts of lying on his financial disclosure forms.
It is the highest-profile felony conviction in a sweeping four-year federal investigation into corruption in Alaska politics, and a rare conviction by a jury of a sitting U.S. senator.
As the verdict on the first count was read, Stevens slumped slightly. When the second count was read, his lawyer, Brendan Sullivan, reached over and put his arm around Stevens' shoulders.
Jurors found that Stevens willfully filed false financial disclosure forms that hid such gifts as the renovations that doubled his home in size. Those gifts, valued at as much as $250,000 over seven years, came mostly from his former friend Bill Allen, the star prosecution witness in Stevens' trial and the former owner of Veco Corp.
This all but means that the Senate race is over, and that we will definitely have a Democrat representing Alaska in Washington.
This is a huge deal in Alaska politics. Conventional wisdom had it that NOBODY could defeat Ted Stevens, but with this decision he is damaged beyond repair.
I still cannot help but wish that he would have simply resigned and held onto a little dignity. I would not have begrudged him that, But it was time for him to leave and if this was the only way that could have been achieved, then so be it.
Don Young's heart rate must be through the roof today. He knows he is next on the chopping block. And can Sarah Palin be far behind?
Alaska, where justice has recently made a triumphant return!
Wow! What is the reaction to the verdict there? Was it expected or are there people who are in shock over it?
ReplyDeleteHere is a link to MSNBC article with the "Palin" quote about verdict:

That arrogant lying bastard I was happy to hear that and hope to hell they burn him but I will be happy for one year! I forget whose site I was on but they had a video of a couple young females who really derided Palin because she was just an alternative to the standard lower than life Politician from Alaska!
ReplyDeleteOH my GAWD!! Palin actually pretty much denied it just like her own involvement in a scandal. Just pretend it didn't happen. Then she actually refused to answer whether or not she'd vote for him?
ReplyDeleteHoly CRAP! THis is great news for your state. You must be ready to bust out the champagne early, Gryphen!
Yeah Helen we are all trying to avoid accidentally pinching ourselves for fear this is all just a pleasant dream.
ReplyDeleteAnd to answer anonymous at the top of this post, there were a lot of Alaskans that are absolutely stunned by this outcome. Uncle Ted is the very definition of the survivor and many up here thought he would not only survive this but win re-election as well.
I doubt that second part will happen, but I do have my worries.
Wow...you all helping Begvich right?? I mean he might actually win- right ????WOW...
ReplyDeleteWon't teddy have to drop out anyways ?
I don't know if I would count Uncle Ted out yet. I work with a whole bunch of R's and they are still ready to vote for him. Geesh, give me a break. The man is a crook!!!
ReplyDeleteGood. Crooks like him should get 100 years. Of course he had no idea that his house was being remodeled. Of course he didn't know how the new furnishing just magically appeared. Of course not.
ReplyDeleteHere's the crazy thing...he can actually still run and get elected, but now that he's a felon, he can't even vote for himself. Senate would have to have a 2/3 vote to get him ousted if he does win reelection.
