Here is the Washington Time's author's take on the real damage caused to Palin by the Vanity Fair article, which has now become a somewhat iconic description of Sarah Palin. (Yeah you heard me, "iconic".)
But the sniping between Steve Smith, Bill Kristol and Randy Scheunemann started in response to the Vanity Fair piece on Palin, which is "the story of a political novice with an intuitive feel for the temper of her times, a woman who saw her opportunities and coolly seized them," writes Todd Purdum.
Of course, it says much more than that, much of it negative, painting a portrait of Palin as an ignorant, megalomaniacal, vindictive woman, which is what prompted the back-and-forth between Schmidt and Kristol. (Sounds about right.)
But I asked one of the senior McCain campaign officials who worked closest with Palin what he thought of the article, by e-mail last night and then this morning over the phone. He e-mailed back immediately, calling the article "absolutely fascinating" and "completely riveting."
"While the Palin camp is surely marshaling the torches and pitchforks and baying for blood by now, my hope is that somehow -- against the odds -- Palin is able to draw some sort of lesson out of all of this that helps her find a way to exist peacefully in the public space. (Oh buddy you simply do not KNOW Sarah Palin!)It can't be easy to spend every day under this kind of withering fire and I know that it is brutal on her family, who are generally good people that never asked for this," the political operative wrote. (I am not so sure how many of the Palin clad are "generally good people" but I do give a free pass to the kids Though I do have some serious concerns about Bristol at this point.)
"You'd think that at some point, even Palin's formidable armor of self-deception would so loudly clang against reality that she'd be forced to change. I doubt that though. Introspection doesn't seem to be her strong-suit. But people can change. I hope she can too . . . for her sake and for our party's." (My advice is, don't hold your breath!)
When I spoke by phone this morning with the same official, he said the VF article was not "contrived" and that it did, in fact, give an accurate portrayal of Palin.
"It's more sad for me because I think she is a great political talent and could have a future or some sort of role, but she has these demons that she can't shake, and I think it's unfortunate she has this ability to disconnect herself from reality when things go wrong and she has this total lack of introspection," he said.
Look I think that Sarah Plain does have some "talent". But it is NOT political talent!
The only talent she seems to have is the ability to read people, manipulate them into believing in her, and then getting them to work, or give money to her.
In my opinion these talents would be very useful if she wants to be either an Evangelical preacher or a television pitchman like the late great Billie Mays.
Didn't she say something to Andrew Halcro about .. When she looks out at the audience, do facts and statistics really matter?
ReplyDeleteHow she says things as "truth" when anyone with a brain or reads the news or "remembers" can see right through
She is playing a "part" .. she sees her audience as silly pawns
Much like a Rock Star who thinks their adoring fans are silly twits but hey they buy my albums!
She thinks the world is her stage.. she is the star.. the Peer's and the like scramble to defend her .. to defend the icon they fell in love with.. but it was just an image
Do they not see she couldn't give a floot about them?
She would of made a statement about the recent Legal Fees fund.. as much as I think the Pee team is whacko.. they did it from the bottom of their hearts.. I am sure many people pulled money they just didn't have..
She didn't have the decency to TWEET "Hey Guys .. THANKS!"
The image of Sarah they fell in love with .. is just that.. an image she put out there.. Who she really is is coming out .. I truly liked her at first. Here is a crazy off the wall politician, cool!! Didn't take long until my gut hit the fan and I was like .. there is just something so very odd about this woman. Slathering on the Christian Love made my keen eye keener.. Just goes to show "Trust Your Gut"
I told my husband about these e-mails while serving dinner, and he just saw David Schuster discuss them on MSNBC. Mr. B was stunned. For SP to go nuts over ONE protester (well, we know what to expect, yes?), and for her to lie about Dud's membership in the AIP two weeks before the election (no surprise here, either)... Steve Schmidt was desperately trying to keep her on message, but SP's emotions are so labile that she goes all over the map at the slightest provocation.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to the release of more campaign e-mails. Given GINO's tendency to add cc's when she doesn't get the answer she wants first time around, oh, there are lots more to come. Fun!
"one of the senior McCain campaign officials who worked closest with Palin"
ReplyDeleteIMO, when this guy says "I think she is a great political talent" he wants us to hear "trainwreck". He expects his listener to translate.
All I can say is, thank god she's such a ignorant overly self-confident twit. If she were intelligent and articulate, she really would be dangerous. There'd be no stopping her.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that she also emailed Kris Perry goes to show that the ethics complaint that got dismissed shouldn't have. Ms Perry was involved in Partisan politics and did work VP campaign issues.
ReplyDeleteSomeone said there was news about Levi and Tank? Was there a new article? And has her highness made any statements ? I am shocked she is so quiet. She must be furious! I highly doubt there is any introspection going ob!
ReplyDeleteIt has hereby been decreed at the sea of pee that ALL of us who disagree with SP's policies, actions or ideas are full of HATE and ENVY. Yep, it is the theme of the day over there. It is all they have. No serious discussion of Palin's qualifications, ideas or actions as Gov. Just ranting that we hate her and envy her. It must be nice to be so ignorant and simplistic - no need to think or analyze. I am actually saddened by how they are being used.
ReplyDeleteSteve Schmidt showed incredible restraint and professionalism, based on what he had to work with IMO. I have a theory that the "leaks" did not come from him at all - but from a certain spoiled rich kid named Megan M.
ReplyDeleteSarah Palin and her Demons...Is that a "Christianist" way of saying she's mentally ill?
ReplyDeleteHey Gryph - I HATE to do this to bloggers - but you need to fix your title or the post - either the Wa Times or the WAPO. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks Michelle, I fixed it.
ReplyDeleteI guess I am so used to typing "Washington Post" that I automatically did it again even though it is the wrong source.
I feel very sorry for the C 4 p people. People who have idols that they can't view objectivel are mentally I'll. For some reason they have to hang onto an image of her that is a fairytale. A complete fairytale. If they were mentally healthy they would be more questioning.
ReplyDeleteI do not hate or envy Sarah Palin. I think she is incompetent and a fraud. And I am sorry they can't be objective at all.
"The only talent she seems to have is the ability to read people, manipulate them into believing in her, and then getting them to work, or give money to her."
ReplyDeleteThat would make her a natural con artist. Well, if the Naughty Monkey fits....
Looks like the C4P clan has found the comment section to this particular article; apparently it's everyone and anyone's fault but GINO's ... (they are kind of fun to watch defending their Queen, aren't they?)
ReplyDeletepenelope said...It has hereby been decreed at the sea of pee that ALL of us who disagree with SP's policies, actions or ideas are full of HATE and ENVY. ReplyDeleteI can't help but think that the C4P'ers' unwavering loyalty reflects a personal belief by each and every one of them (even the old crock from England) that with their loyalty and money, they've just bought tickets on the Rapture Express, riding the same spaceship as their Icon, Sarah.
Lizabeth @5:17
ReplyDeleteI saw an article on HuffPost about Levi and Tank. Fluff, he was in NY and he said he didn't like NY.
Envy and Hate...well, also on HuffPost is an article by a Mr. MacKinnon using those very same words. The article mentioned women being envious over Palin. Oh yeah. The guy was the former press secretary (I think that's right) of Bob Dole.
Another strategy to belittle or shut women up.
Gryphen, great post. Love your comments, as always.
ReplyDeleteMcCain and Palin are now going after the one who leaked the emails. Hope the person receives a medal. I tried to post about the cost of the emails that Celtic Diva was charged, but HuffPost deleted my info. I tried.
Let's focus on Sarah and her hired hands instead of the paranoid nuts at Sea of Pee-ers. We all agree that they are a bit nuts (ya think?) over there. Why give them more air time here? Just a thought.
ReplyDeletePalin invigorates the 'Joes' with a 5 pack. It wouldn't be a problem if they couldn't vote, but they can.
ReplyDeleteWhat in God's name is there to envy? She's pretty? Skin deep and there are lots of pretty women in the world. What does she have going for her after that?
ReplyDeletePalin has nothing to say about any of this? Completely desimate her character and she is silent. But god forbid you make a joke or alter a photo of her, then the claws come out.
ReplyDeleteThis is truly the most ridiculous women I have ever seen on TV
Check out politico. There is a very accurate article under one of Ben Smiths columns about Sarah Palin. Check out the comments.
ReplyDeleteOne crazy women insists Palin will be the GOP nominee and she says who cares if Palin isn't educated, the best leaders aren't. Huh?? Loony.
One or 2 people mentioned the Trig controversey and I think that brought the palinbots out. Hope you will all go and write in support of babygate and other issues. The comments have not been erased which is incredible.
Sarah Palin has the same charasmatic appeal to her worshippers as did Jim Jones, David Koresh, and Charles Manson. The P-NUTS and TS have coated Sarah with Teflon and NOTHING is and has NEVER been her fault. Sad really, to think that these people blindly follow her even when truths about what happened during the campaign and her constant lying comes to light.
ReplyDeleteLet them believe that she would be nominated as the next POTUS. She will then HAVE to produce a REAL medical record and everything that she has said and done will be exposed. Too many audio and video of Palin lying for Palin to deny all.
The Palinbots contention that Palin haters are jealous of her is really TOO funny to even defend.
Don't know what is worst: the Palin's, Jones, Mansons, and Koresh's of the world OR their simple minded followers who will do anything for their masters.
Just a thought: maybe the Palinbots can build their own little compound and call it "The Real America Temple".
She's Elmer Gantry without the brains or integrity.
ReplyDeletethe Palinistas can't imagine the values of liberal Americans, hence they can fool themselves into believing we are as shallow as Republicans and therefore jealous of a person who has not done anything to earn admiration.
ReplyDeletePhysical beauty is DNA. Any fool can be born with beauty. It takes real character to build a life full of love, trust and passion, based on hard work and honesty.
I have never, for a moment, been jealous of Palin. I personally do not find her attractive, but that's because the ugliness of her heart has ruined her physical gifts for me. She has a certain charm, but it's superficial and disturbing when you realize how often she dissembles and misrepresents the truth. her looks are ruined when you read about the people whose lives she has ruined with her vindictiveness.
Liberals values must be much deeper than conservatives, if the cee peers are any example of conservative values. Why would anyone be jealous of a woman who uses her children and is epically incompetent and cruel to boot? It blows my mind that they don't get that they are admitting to utter frivolity and superficiality with their accusations that we are jealous of Palin.
They are jealous of Obama, clearly. Palin is practically stalking Obama, so desperate is she to compete with him and be seen as equal to him. Her crowd doesn't even see that he is brilliant and thoughtful, because of course, it takes one to know one. He is quite simply out of their league.
Birds of a feather....
I really just wish that everyone on this blog would just stop claiming that they don't hate Palin. Christ, the mere mention of Palin is dripping with hate! Maybe they're kristians or something and they have to make the claim that they don't hate. That's gotta be it. Then on the other hand maybe it's a resentment of the simple fact that Palin has such control over them that they don't want to admit they need to hate her so. One of the strongest emotions, along with love.
ReplyDeleteAs for the envious girls, and you know who you are, the comments on Palin's RW pictures certainly did indicate a lot of envy to me. Now really, which one of you old bags wouldn't like to look like her at 45?
As for my opinion of Palin, I'm an atheist and I hate her and don't have to worry about admitting it. Envy? No, but I do admire her beauty. I think the beauty is a big part of what drives the girls here. If she was a plain Jane I don't think so many would be worried about her.
Good looks is the most dangerous thing about stupid American politicians. Americans haven't learned a defence against it yet.
The MacKinnon article on Huffington Post claims that any woman down on Palin is simply envious of her and that any man who criticizes her does so because he'd like to go down on her but knows he can't. This is supposed to explain away all criticism of Palin as springing from either envy or sexual frustration.
ReplyDeleteSo, does Mr. MacKinnon truly believe when 89-year-old Wally Hickel, former Alaska governor and co-chair of Palin's gubernatorial campaign, expresses his sense of betrayal - "...once elected, she put Sarah first" - that he does so simply because lusts for Palin's untouchable "throbbing thighs?" It's just too laughable.
VERY IMPORTANT. Look at the July 2 article on Christian Science Monitor Web site, "In Alaska, Many Pine for the Old Palin." This is a scathing article in the normally Sarah-friendly Monitor that focuses on her bad governance in Alaska. Both the Washington Times and The Christian Science Monitor lean conservative, so when they both carry critical articles, it's a bad omen for Sarah Palin.
another good article!

Here's a funny little rundown on the creator of the SarahPAC Obama_As-Ape rth of July fundraiser video:

Hey, folks! Don't miss this; he got it just about right.

@ SarahQ,
ReplyDeleteI wrote the post above about not being envious of Sarah. You will believe whatever you want, but believe me, I am no "hag". I work as a print model and have been in several theatrically released films.
You will keep telling yourself that we are all "hags" because it is the only explanation left except the truth -- and all I can say back to you is "your value system is showing again".
A hag is a horrible, misogynistic term for an aging woman. So, what you're saying is that all women who are older have lost the right to have a viable opinion on a political figure because they are no longer "hot" and therefore are jealous.
It is your exact attitude that makes me and many other women instinctively recoil from Palin. You value a woman based on her looks. That's patriarchal, old-school misogyny and most of us have tried all of our lives to overcome it.
And no, not because we are old worthless hags, but because we are women of any age who value ourselves for more than our physicality.
Your post was most offensive to me.
You really should apologize to women you've called hags.
But then, I shouldn't expect manners from a Palinite.
Good day.
I'm sorry, but I just don't think she's all that good looking. I know lots of people that are much better looking.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't take that much to enter these pageants, so I'm really not that impressed. My sister-in-law was in one (her mother twisted her arm to get her to do it). The whole thing is really pretty phoney. But they label her a "beauty queen" and everyone thinks she's so gorgeous. Take a reall look at her -- she just isn't.
I do not hate Palin, just the way she misrepresents herself to America. The VF article clearly points this out. She tries to suppress ANYTHING that makes her look bad, even if it is the truth. The manipulation of reality is her main game. Stupidity is next. Just the idea that she thinks she can run a scam on the American people and get away with it really angers me. She is why I now visit as many progressive blogs in Alaska as I can. To discover the truth about the real Sarah Palin. When McCain pulled her onto the national stage, and I heard her speak, I immediately smelled a dead and decaying rat.
ReplyDeleteI could never truly envy a person of significantly less intelligence than myself. Sure, I'm capable of envying various things, but IQ points trump money or looks hands down.
ReplyDeleteIt is really quite odd that SarahQ thinks women are only capable of liking or disliking a politician based on her looks, and how it compares with their own looks. Especially odd when one considers the psychological theory of projection, in which one assumes that other people look at the world the same way you do.
Gee, if SarahQ is right, then probably women should not be allowed to vote.
The article in VF stated, "The view along Wasilla's main drag is of Chili's, IHOP, Home Depot, Target, and Arby's, and yet the view from the Palins' front yard on Lake Lucille, recalls the alpine splendor visible from Captain Von Trapp's terrace in the 'Sound of Music'". The writer should have used the Kehlsteinhaus, or Eagle's Nest of southern Germany instead. The Von Trapp family stood against the tyranny of Fascism. In Germany, Hitler narrowly came to power because the people were fearful. Fearful of the horrible ecomomy, fearful of people different then them, fearful of war with communist Russia. Hitler considered himself a Christian as well. Martin Luther was his personal Theologian. Both were rabid anti-semites. Fascists always know how to stoke the fear factor to expand their power.
ReplyDeleteSarah Q:
ReplyDeleteIf I hate something, I will say it. Comments about Palin
may seem harsh but are based on facts of what she has done and said. Unlike her worshippers whose ONLY talking points are: we are jealous, it's the MSM's fault, it's Obama's fault, and that we fear her.
Envy means wishing to be like that person. I do not envy Palin. I could not use my children, family, and friends to further my own ambitions.
I envy people who have made a difference in this world through good deeds and without the need of acknowledgment.
To call other women old bags because they may be envious of Palin makes you as shallow as she. (How many runners use pantyhose under their sweats?)
Palin does not control my life. I control my own. And as long as she is a contender to be POTUS, I will continue to monitor all of her lies and make sure that those closest to me know the truth about her.
Hate is a very strong word to use and I was taught that I should only hate what is evil. Are you saying that I hate Palin? Maybe I should.
@SarahQ...this time I can't defend your speech. I am in my 50's and believe it or not...am told often that I still "have it". I am married to a man who is 11 years younger than I ...and he tells me daily that I am beautiful.
ReplyDeleteEnvy has never been a trait that I have embraced. I think Sarah Palin is the worst kind of politician...I think she is an embarrassment to women of all ages...not just to us old hags.
You do realize just how offensive that term is? Yes...I am sure you do.
I happen to have read enough of your posts to know that you are no palinista...but perhaps others have not. Perhaps they don't recognize your blunt nature...perhaps they don't give a damn.
You were out of line with that comment.
Laurie
TEAM CANADA CONFLICT? Nooooooo
ReplyDeleteBut Casey, you're a Canadian aren't you?
ReplyDeleteAnd I don't know if my later comment has been deleted by Gryphen or not but if you read what "I" said you will find that I didn't call anyone an old hag.
Small distinction yes, but it also indicates that anon went off halfcocked and that gave me some satisfaction.
Please don't think you have to apologize for anything you disagree with. There's likely to be quite a bit.
Oh, and Casey, if Gryphen starts to needlessly censor what I say then I'll be outta here. He'll have to decide whether he values my input or thinks he can do without it.
Just in case you can email me at russellrou@gmail.com
Yes Patti, you hate Palin.
ReplyDeletePalin has definitely got herself a huge ego problem. Reminds me of when I used to go to a fitness center and there was a guy who would stand in front of the mirror and do poses. Didn't care a damn whether anyone was watching him and laughing at him. We called him Igor ego. To help you understand it better, this is what the 'thrashing of my guts' is all about. And how she 'loves the pain' of running hard. It's just an egoist's vain attempt to impress on others how fit she is and how hard she works out. Being seen as she's awarded the trophy is much, much more important than doing the running for these kind of people. Real dedicated athletes don't operate that way.
My favorite MSM response to the news McCandy is abdicating her role as governor came from CNN's Rick Sanchez who asked:
ReplyDelete"Is she pregnant again?"
Hahahahahahahaha!
Well, I guess only if Todd's business partner is still available to schtup her.
Ahh, the Obama cult sounding off to one another. What a bunch of lemmings (including you Gryph). You're actually soliciting contributions for this crap? A pox on the houses of all Dems and Repubs. You people just don't get it.
ReplyDelete
