Is Sarah Palin leaving politics to pursue a higher calling?

I made mention way back on November 15 that Palin's book was written for a very specific audience. And as it turns out I was not alone in that observation.

Though most of the talk surrounding the release of Going Rogue revolves around how it affects Palin's standing as a political figure, including her chances of winning the White House, should she choose to run, the book is as much poised to heighten Palin's profile as a Christian leader. "It's a mistake to frame all this in the context of her potential candidacy," Mark DeMoss, one of the country's top Christian media specialists, says of Going Rogue. "She wants to tell her story and the story of her personal faith journey." At a time when politically conservative evangelicals lack a national figurehead, Palin's ability to connect with them could also deepen her appeal to a key part of the Republican base. "Christian audiences could respond to this like they did when George W. Bush talked about his faith," says John Green, a religion and politics expert at the University of Akron. "This community takes faith very seriously and likes people who talk about their faith journey."

Until now, that part of Palin's story has been mostly implied. As John McCain's vice presidential running mate last year, she generally avoided talk of her faith and its influence on her politics. But word of her decision to carry her pregnancy to term despite knowing her son Trig would be born with Down syndrome was an inspiration to antiabortion activists, mostly Roman Catholics and evangelicals. (NOW do you understand how important Trig is to Palin's mythology?) News that Palin's unwed teen daughter Bristol was pregnant and would give birth had a similar effect. "[The Palins] should be commended once again for not just talking about their pro-life and pro-family values," Focus on the Family's James Dobson said at the time, "but living them out even in the midst of trying circumstances."

In promoting the book, Palin is building on that Christian outsider theme. She accuses the news media of singling out conservative religious politicians like her for unfair treatment.(And firmly connects herself to the persecution complex promoted by Evangelical Christians in this country) "I do absolutely notice that some of the conservative Christians who are members of Congress . . .it seems like the leftist media treats them a little bit different," she said during a recent interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network. Such sentiments are likely to resonate with evangelicals, many of whom feel embattled by the secular culture. "A lot of evangelicals say, 'The press covers us the same way—she must be one of us,' " says Green.

That solidarity may help the 45-year-old Palin become an heir to Focus's Dobson, who is giving up his decades-old radio show, and other graying Christian right leaders. "What makes her different from other political leaders is that she sees politics as a vocation, as something you're called to do," says Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the antiabortion group the Susan B. Anthony List, who is hoping Palin steps up her role in the conservative values movement. Whether she winds up doing so is an open question. But after Palin governed Alaska as a centrist, Going Rogue is helping solidify her national reputation as a poster child for religious conservatives.

Can you just picture it? "Sarah Palin's Wasilla Hour of Gospel Power" beaming into your home from the last frontier, and the last best refuge from the coming Rapture.

Well I have been saying for quite some time that Palin is acting more like a televangelist then a person with political aspirations. She is focused almost exclusively on making money and gathering disciples, and seems to be forming some kind of base camp in Fairbanks, where writers from C4P have ensconced themselves and seem to be awaiting further instructions.

I have been struggling to decide if she was helping to form a third political party or a new religious movement, But now I am wondering if what she ends up creating will not be some hybrid of both!

One of the main focuses of the Religious Right has been a campaign to remove the separation of church and state and to make constitutional law subordinate to biblical law. In other words they want to form a Theocracy. And what better way to do that then to form a third political party defined both by its ultra-conservatism as well as its unrestrained promotion of their brand of Christianity?

The internal battle within the GOP between the social conservatives and the old guard, fiscal conservatives has rendered the party useless for moving swiftly to find and promote candidates that the followers of Sarah Palin, James Dobson, and Franklin Graham can give their seal of approval.

A third party where the lines between politics and religion are blurred to form a "Christocrats" party, which can funnel evangelical candidates (and money raised directly from the pulpit) into local elections all over the country, would be just the thing to satiate their hunger for power and control. A party which could very well saturate state governments, city governments, and school boards with Warriors for Christ in just a few years.

These "Christocrats" would focus all of their attention on fighting to repeal Roe vs Wade, getting prayer back into the classroom, and establishing Christianity as the one true religion in America. They would not be distracted by such mundane things as balancing a budget, maintaining roads and highways, or promoting equality for minorities.

So the question that we need to ask is, will a party like this be able to compete with the two parties we currently have? The answer is yes, it can. Truthfully it has already begun.

We have seen how easily it is to agitate and mobilize these people by watching it being done on Fox News by Glenn Beck. We have also seen a totally unqualified candidate, supported by Palin and her ilk, crush a Republican candidate in New York and come within a hair's breath of defeating the Democratic challenger.

The same teabaggers who were directed to vote for Doug Hoffman are just looking for a new party to lead them forward, and they already believe that Sarah Palin is God's gift (literally) to politics. It is only a hop, skip, and a jump from there to starting a new all white, all Christian, all coo-coo, third party that will gladly, and energetically, push their agenda forward on the House and Senate floors.

Sure at first they will have no power and will get laughed out of Chambers. But what happens when there are three of them, and five of them, and twenty five of them? Who will be laughing then? And we have already seen Republican politicians embracing this primitive brand of conservatism in an effort to hold onto their positions so we can definitely expect more of the same.

No my friends, we are in for a battle for the very heart of our nation. And there is coming a time when those who decide to sit out elections because "voting doesn't help anyhow" will find themselves living in a country where their rights to religious freedom, their right to a secular education for their children, and their right to be treated equally will be a thing of the past.

If you think I am overreacting then just take a moment and think back to when you believed that there was no way in hell that somebody as ignorant and untalented as George W. Bush would EVER be elected to the Presidency. But it happened didn't it?

Yep, it sure did.

Look up Aimee Semple McPherson on Wikipedia, and note amazing parallels between Aimee and Sarah.
I think Sarah is clearly aiming at a life as a religious grifter. People who buy Sarah's "wild ride" would also have bought Aimee's "disappearance"

  4. Everytime I read about Palin and her Theocracy ideas I think about the chapter in the Bible that talks about the woman and the beast - Revelation 17 - "Come, I will show you the punishment of the great prostitute, who sits on many waters. 2With her the kings of the earth committed adultery and the inhabitants of the earth were intoxicated with the wine of her adulteries."

Doesn't it matter to these people at all that she lies nearly every time she opens her mouth??? Or that she hardly promotes "love one another", or exemplifies "judge not"? I can't believe that many sincere Christians are blind, deaf and dumb as a box of rocks, but if they see her as a worthy leader, what else is there to think?

Gryphen, this is so frighteningly true that it needs the widest possible circulation.
As I just posted on "God's Own Party?", the problem with those of us who use logic and rationality, who cherish our indepence of thought and mental gymnastics are not followers.
Thus we tend to fail at organizing ourselves into cohesive influence groups. This is going to become our downfall, because the power hungry radicals of all stripes on the right have already enslaved their followers. We WILL have a Theocracy in our near future if we do not fight this demagoguery now.

Gryphen, there is no other choice: people who know Palin's secrets must come forward and soon with evidence to dethrone her and discredt her in front of her disciples.

She reminds me of a hybrid of Jim Jones of the lethal KoolAid infamy and, of course, George W. Bush. She can call believers to her with a combo of her sex appeal, her beauty contestant demeanor and glib sound bites designed to harmonize with every fear, every desire for empowerment and a misplaced religious mission.

She is, in short, one of the biggest dangers to our system of government and the diversity of our culture. Surely, there are enough people with credible reputations and credible evidence that band together or come forward singly to sink this dismal celebutante.

I thank each and every Alaskan blogger who is trying to get the word out about her.

I cannot help but think of Molly Ivins who tried to blow the whistle on W. You all are her successors and I wish more success than she had - but then, she seemed to a lone voice in his home state with few with the courage to join her in her quest to expose his stupidity and ineptness.

We cannot afford another W. Sarah, though, is just not another W. He at least had Laura who sort of kept from going totally apeshit. There seems to be no one at all capable of playing the Laura role to Sarah. So our hopes are in your hands.

Each of your readers (and readers of all the anti-Palin Alaskan blogs) will do our best to make others aware, but you all have the best aopportunity to investigate and expose. Good luck. We are with you and appreciate all you all do.

I have no doubt that Palin would love to tap into that vast reservoir of insanity that is the Khristian Taliban movement. Those rapture ready goofballs who eagerly snap up the latest “Left Behind” books or DVDs. They are stupid and they are easily parted from their cash if the marketing includes the word “Jesus” anywhere and if it even remotely panders to their insane beliefs. That’s the rub.

In Palin’s speeches since being called up to the majors in August of 2008, she NEVER mentions Jesus, only God. The fundagelicals are a Jesus cult who nearly never use the word “God” except when mentioning the Father of Jesus. In consulting at least four online indexes of “Goin’ Rogue,” the name of “Jesus” is conspicuously absent. I’m not saying that constitutes definitive proof that Jesus is not mentioned in Lynn Vincent’s autobiography of Sarah Palin, but if she was using the name in a manner befitting that of one courting the fundagelicals, you’d think that Jesus would have been mentioned frequently enough to make it in at least one index.

I don’t see Palin as a truly committed fundagelical. I don’t think that she doubts their peabrained theology and world view, I just don’t think that she gives it much thought. Hell, I don’t think she thinks much about ANYTHING of consequence. The Narcissus of the North is too preoccupied with gazing admiringly at her own reflection to concentrate on anything else for very long. Hence, it is going to be difficult for her to speak in the appropriate code words that will clue in the fundies that she is one of them. If she can’t convince them, she will not be able to attract them for long. Sure, they like fame and celebrity as much as anyone else, but they are seeking captains to lead them to the new Jerusalem and to guide them as the fly through the air come the rapture. If she can’t sell them - and not using the name of Jesus at least once in every paragraph won’t cut it with the fundies - she will not be able to hang count on their support.

Palin is trying to manipulate, spin, and fleece the fundagelicals just like she’s trying to do to everyone else. Sarah is NOT a true believer, she is merely willing to affect the outward trappings in order to hawk some books and possibly fish for asome votes as well.

Sarah Palin is a perfidious moron.

Palin is worse than George W. Bush. Gryphen dont forget: The first time, George W. Bush was NOT elected. He was SELECTED by the U.S. Supreme Court. And if it had not been for 9/11, he would have more than likely have been a one-term president. As for that race in N.Y., it should not come as a surprise that the teabagger candidate "crushed" the republican candidate, because the base/majority of the republican party, are far-right conservatives, like Palin. Second, it should also not be a surprise that the race between the democrat and the teabagger was so close, because a democrat had not held that seat since the 1800's. Palin with her meddling changed that. (I think Barack Obama won that district in 2008, as well.) Plus, the demographics of this country are changing. Most minorites don't like her, and most women don't even like her. The main demographic that she attracts are horny, old white men. (Like, Chris Matthews) Some of which will be dead, soon. Just look at the lines at her book-signings. What kind of people do you mostly see? They look like KKKlan rallies. And, so far, Palin has not been able to expand her base. And, she doesn't seem to care. You cannot win a general election, with just the base. As of now, the majority of Americans have a negative view of Palin. If the majority of people still feel the same way about her in 2012, forget it. And it's hard to make a second impression. AND, she is not getting any younger. If she continues to age, and begins to lose her "hotness," she will lose some of her shallow, and horny fan base.

Right, Gryphen, re: GW. There are naturally concerns about her underground religious beliefs, and activities directed to her subset-of-a-subset audience. In a televangelical capacity she might be able to deliver this minority vote to the GOP each election cycle. In any other capacity, however, the only way Sarah Palin can actually rally massive numbers of people around herself is if she keeps herself as a blank slate, just as Bush did. To do this, she has to be this rather ambiguous, sound-bite repeating, patriotism-oozing, telegenic Barbie doll, with just the right amount of spunk. Mark my words, she will never publicly go into her crazy belief system if she gets further along on her political path. But, if the work of people like those here and those on other like-minded sites can just continue - applying relentless, laser-focused intensity, providing specific details on specific issues - well then, she can't possibly succeed at maintaining the ruse. She must be outed, essentially (no disrespect intended to those for whom this word has a particular meaning). I fully concur that no one should underestimate Sarah Palin and those who would use her for their own purposes, just as she uses them. If she were allowed to continue, unfettered, sky's the limit for her and her puppeteers, just like GW - and we know what our complacency, our refusal to believe he could be elected, and re-elected, got us.

Good post, Gryphen, but I'm not buying the likelihood of a theocracy in this country. Oh, I don't doubt that people like Palin could whip up their true believers (a minority) to act politically but the direction of the country is inexorably more secular and tolerant. Theocracy won't happen but meanwhile we'll have to listen to the tiresome gnashing of teeth and wailing from that vocal minority who, like all true believers, believe that their view of life's rules and their perception of God is the ONLY WAY.

People keep forgetting the circumstances involving the 2000 presidential election, that put Bush 43 in the Oval Office, and the 2004 election which kept him there. Bush 43 was not elected in 2000! The Supreme Court put him in office! Al Gore got most of the popular
vote. If it were not for the electoral college, Bush 43 would have never been in the White House.
Bush 43 was only elected in 2004, because of 9/11, and for being a wartime president. Even after 9/11 Bush 43 did not beat John Kerry in a landslide. And, don't forget, people actually liked Bush 43, (even when his job approval
ratings were low) most people don't even like Palin!

Gryphen, a year ago I would have thought this post was too alarmist. Even many of your commenters call the Christianists "wackos" and so forth, which can be dismissive. I agree they are delusional, but we must not underestimate them!

I went back to my home town in the US for Thanksgiving; it's a largely-Catholic Northeast area (never a hotbed of any sort of religiosity in my lifetime, though.. sort of your Christmas and Easter churchgoers..) At the Barnes and Noble I saw that AN ENTIRE AISLE was now devoted to Bibles, and ANOTHER ENTIRE AISLE was devoted to something called "Christian Fiction". [Could be one and the same, but I digress..]

WTF is "Christian Fiction"?? Is Dickens' "Christmas Carol" to be found in "Christian Fiction" or with regular fiction??? Is there some sort of review board that is in charge of segregating Barnes and Noble offerings along religious sectarian lines?? There were no aisles for "Hindu Fiction" or "Buddhist Fiction" or "Atheist Fiction", you can be sure.

i never in a million years dreamed I would ever see such a thing!!! I'd like to think it's just a cynical marketing phenomenon, like the vampire fad, but...??

It really goes back much farther, start with Dr. Abraham (Abram) Vereide (October 7, 1886 - June 1969) and his opposition to the labor organizor Harry Bridges (July 28, 1901–March 30, 1990).

Verheide started "The Fellowship" as a movement to oppose the radical labor organizing that was taking place in the 1930's on the west coast. Verheide was out of Seattle, Bridges from San Francisco.

The Fellowship, or as it's known today, "The Family" sponsors the National Prayer Breakfast.

    See Billy and Franklin Graham.

The labor side of this story includes a man named Dave Beck, and his protege Jesse Carr.

Alaskans will recognize the name Jesse Carr, Dave Beck perhaps not.

Dave Beck was a Teamster labor organizer in Seattle, he preceded Jimmy Hoffa by a decade.

Notice the time Jerry Prevo shows up in Alaska, at the peak of Jesse Carr and the Teamsters 959 heyday during the pipeline construction.

Culvahouse did the vetting from McCain, he attended the University of Tennessee as did Jerry Prevo. THAT is the connection to make if you ask me, Culvahouse (a Baptist) to Franklin Graham and Jerry Prevo.

Gryphen, on the "never in a million years" front, I've a postscript.. My sister just this year became one of those "pea-brained" (earlier comment) Rapture-Ready evangelicals!! She is highly educated, graduated from Wesleyan, later got an MBA. Go figure. She got sucked up by one of these new "church plants" or whatever.. she is urged to "fund the revolution".. she goes on about how hard they work.. they've gathered up about 200 souls so far. Bizarrely, they are all tricked out with lots of media gear: sound system, Powerpoint, website with podcasts, a database/tracking barcode system for the kids in the Sunday School, even!!!! They cry poverty but there is money behind it. The pastor moans about having no health insurance and a parishioner writes him a check ("Praise the Lord!"). Nice gig if you can get it.

It's called "Calvary Fellowship" and the folks are up from Florida or from Michigan (it's unclear) with past sob stories of an AA/drug rehab genre. I just think they are grifters looking for fertile ground in a place not know for its crazy evangelical churches (we are talking well-off suburban CT, here).

Arrgh. My sister has become a bot.

She will fit right in with the nutty side of Christianity
My experience with the holy roller/fire and brimstone churches... the "leaders" ALWAYS had all the loot and say over matters while the "following" were always on the fringe of losing their homes.

Those they preach to are told money, materialism, recognition .. all those greedy things are from the devil. So these folk try to be more humble, ask the preacher if it is OK to buy something like a new refrigerator.. what job should they take...

The whacko church I went to had about 20 families total.. how their tithing was able to support the pastor's family of 5 is a mystery. Their home wasn't a mansion ..actually it only had 4 bedrooms but "somehow" the inside of the home was constantly being remodeled. Before I left, the two oldest were sent off to college.. that takes $$ with designer luggage sets. EVERY night for dinner it was a feast. That family wanted for nothing yet those that attended the church were the poorest of the poor except ONE family. The dad in this family was actually a successful business man. He was the one and only deacon. The pastor buttered up to this fellow as without his money.. It was a very sick church.
The guest "evangelists" pulled up in fancy RV's all slicked up.. after giving a guilt ridden, highly energetic (can't have the holy spirit without some fast music and alot of screamin'!) they would pass that offering tin around over and over. Like I said.. the folks that went there were DIRT POOR!!
The teachers at the school (yes they had a school in the basement of the church) made a grand $157 a week. They had to get a 2nd job just to be able to "live" .. while spending mon-fri 7am - 7pm at the school. The pastor/preacher was the principle as well. He strolled in around 11 each day.. if at all and left by 3pm.
Just saying the twisted way these crazy church people work is to preach against materialism so as to have their following fearful and opening their wallets.. while those leaders live the high life.
I posted before about Palin only zeroing in on the anti-Hollywood/elite/ect factions of America while she lives the exact opposite
Mansion, Plane, 2nd House, $$$$$ from books and speaking, Veneers, Hair extensions (those guys aren't cheap!), personal tanning bed, designer glasses, ect.....

She will be relegated to the role of cheerleader by the white, male organization that funds her. Because she is female, she will never have true power. I'm reading The Family and it specifically states that MALES only get to be the ones running the show. Both spiritually and politically, females are sent to the "kitchen" as Glenn Beck so aptly put it.
As a female I find it horrifying that someone closely tied to thsi bunch is writing bills that put female reproductive freedom in danger (Stupak). We've all seen what happens when women do not have access or knowledge of birth control (Bristol).

I would love to see her off the political stage, but I honestly think that she is being talked up as a candidate for 2012 simply because the media has no one else "exciting" to talk about. Now that they think Huckabee's out in 2012, some of them are calling her the frontrunner. As if this whole book fiasco didn't happen and she has a shred of credibility left. Have you ever looked at the demographics of the US by race? Caucasians are close to becoming a minority. Nearly all the growth in our country's population over the last 10-20 years has been in non-whites. The overwhelming growth in the minor and young adult population is among Hispanic, Asian and other so-called minority groups.

Unless the Amerikan Taliban expand their tent (which I don't think they will, they are afraid of change) they are destined to remain a minority group.

  42. I've mentioned this before but I'll mention it again. Palin was hand picked by Franklin Graham as the VP Candidate. McCain knew he needed the religious right to win & Graham is head of the movement & he chose Palin. Perhaps that's why Palin wasn't vetted. It was a done deal. For years Billy Graham would have nothing to do with his "maverick" son but it would seem he has changed his mind. This connection came out during the election & it does not seem as if enough has been made of it. Yep, Graham is putting Palin strings & she such an idiot & narcissist she probably doesn't even get it, just loves the adoring crowds. Graham is a very dangerous man.

  43. Some anonymous person pointed this out on Palingates. Why does Sarah never mention Jesus Christ? She always talk about God, especially in her book, but she never talks about Jesus. Christanity was founded on the teachings of Jesus Christ. To be a Christian you must confess that Jesus is Lord. At least this is what I was taught. Why does Sarah never mention Jesus?

"For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist." (John 7:24 ESV)

Please notice that the offering plates are being passed and I hope that God will lead you to give strongly and share your good blessings with others who need your money more than you do really! Such as me, since fixing roofs and building turrets and hiring nannies is expensive and God has told me that Jesus wants Bristol to keep quiet. That was me. I found it rather remarkable, that she is what I would call a born-again Christian, but she rarely mentions Jesus. Now, President Obama is a Christian too and he doesn't get into the specifics of his religion. But he is a mainstream Christian (truly, he is, Rev Wright has done lots of great work, just uses inflammatory rhetoric sometimes for a particular audience). So I wouldn't have expected President Obama to wear his religion on his sleeve. But the fundies? That's a different matter entirely. Not only are they usually going on about their own supposed piety, but they are frequently butting in to the state of everyone else's soul! They come on very strong, they are very judgmental and single-minded, they are completely convinced of the superiority of their "way", and they think it is their God-given job to proselytize and collect souls for the Almighty. I am a Christian, and I find it obnoxious and offensive. I don't think it is my job to tell others what to believe or not to believe. Every Christian I know lives by this, as well. We believe there are many paths. We are deeply troubled by people like Sarah Palin and her ilk. They are presenting a distorted view of our religion, just as the fanatical Islamic fundamentalists are presenting a distorted interpretation of Islam.

Btw, James Dobson and his group are not a religious organization, they are a political organization. (I don't care what they purport to be.) There is a huge difference. And I agree with posters who feel that while these folks are scary in the scope of their plans, this idea of a total takeover is unlikely. The truth of the matter is that when people like this attain positions of power in the real world, all of a sudden they sell out on their pure zealotry. Like the person above noted, the televangelists are all about money, not creating a Theocracy. Sarah is no different. To me the concerning thing is these folks don't seem to be qualified to run for office. That is the real danger, should they get elected. Uniformed, undereducated idealogues running the country. Now that's really scary.

Gryphen, this is a wonderful post. I want to preface my remarks by saying I am a Christian Republican flag-waving conservative who has lived my entire life in the church and in a hillbilly region of this country. I grew up poor, but achieved financial comfort through my own strong work initiative and the opportunities this great country provides to everyone. By all accounts, I should be one of those standing in awe of Sarah Palin.

Sarah’s looks have given her the opportunity to rise to a national level. She spouts being a conservative and uses those time-tested sound bites repeatedly, but did not govern as a conservative. She claims a strong faith, but does not believe in church attendance, tithing, humility and truth. Religion is more like a piece of clothing she uses to clothe the real aspirations of Sarah. While I do feel she has faith, she is convinced that God speaks directly to her and guides her everyday decisions. Her type of religion is the old hell-fire rhetoric transformed in to a hatred for races, other religions, media, education and other countries.

Sarah wants America to see her wonderful family and holds them as an example of her great parenting skills, but in reality, the shoemaker’s children go shoeless and perfect families emit errant children. What are Sarah’s real aspirations? I don’t think, and I am betting even Sarah doesn’t know. She is surrounding herself and immersing herself in a group of followers who believe she is the savior of this nation, the religious right, family values and womanhood. She wants to isolate her critics and deflects their charges as immature, ridiculous and hateful.

In monitoring the conservative talk show media during the past couple of weeks, I first noticed the fervor of her much anticipated book as these talk show hosts positioned themselves for interviews. Since the election, many of these talk show hosts have been calling her the savior of the Republican Party and the in-facto leader of the conservative movement. Amazingly, after the book was out and a few of these people have read the drivel, there has been a marked change in the frequency of the references to Palin and her potential. While I don’t feel any of them are ready to call her out, they are disappointed in the shallowness of her book and her policy statements.

While she shills the conservative rhetoric, she has no concrete plans or ideas for improving this country’s problems. She argues against health care, but has no alternative or has not made any attempt to work with other Republicans and conservatives to develop a health care initiative.

Whether Sarah Palin becomes another Tammy Faye Baker, Aimee Semple McPherson or Mother Theresa it is immaterial. This country will be best served by keeping Sarah Palin out of the White House.

  51. As a member of the church going left (adoptee, adoptive mother and anti abortion, but not throwing stones) I would love to see a counter movement to SP and the Christocrats. Jesus would so not approve of them from what I can tell. I would love to see a rationalist, humanitarian THINKING PERSON's party. I would love to be labeled a THINKER, and not a LIBERAL (although yeah, I'm pretty liberal). I just think we need a paradigm shift.

In Massachusetts now Alan Khazei is running for Ted Kennedy's senate seat. He is described as someone who thinks before he speaks, and considers things carefully from all angles and works as a grass roots (founded City Year) activist and organizer. We need more of him. Too bad he won't get elected Senator.

to the people who asked the question "why doesn't sarah talk about jesus?": it's really very simple.

    because jesus wasn't mean.

god, on the other hand, is spiteful and vengeful - just like sarah. she has nothing in common with jesus, but she loves her mean, spiteful, vengeful god.

  55. For all those who are asking why Palin never mentions Jesus, I think I have the answer. Notice how often she mentions "God"? I think "God" is a codeword for "Jesus" and the people on the Right know that.

I think she's trying not to alienate the main-stream. She can mention and talk about her faith in "God", but saying "Jesus" would mark her as a religious righty. I'm Jewish and believe in God - to a certain extent - but get really turned off when I read about these Republican rightys talk about "Jesus". I think by substituting "God" for "Jesus" she can make it clear to her "base" that she's a believer but not offend anyone else who happens to read her book.

When she drops the "God" for "Jesus", we'll know that she's given up her political aspirations and is going for a straight religious role.

  56. Don't worry Gryph.

Anon at 2:08am is correct. Sarah Palin will never be a full-fledged CHURCH leader, because she is a SHE.

I attend a VERY large, evangelical megachurch in the buckle of the Bible Belt, and NONE of our pastors or Sunday School teachers are women, unless they are teaching children or a class of women only. That's just how it is at the majority of these churches - her followers included.

However, that won't stop her from making (a lot of)money by writing inspirational books, or going on speaking tours.

There are many, many female Christians doing quite well in that regard...

HOWEVER THAT SAID -- Having been around a lot of these women over the years, well -- Let's just put it this way: If you thought Sarah Palin was unqualified for VPOTUS, she sure as heck isn't qualified to be an evangelical leader. She never mentions the Lord, she says hateful things about the people she used to love, and her focus is most DEFINITELY NOT on the family,,, the touchstone of any Christian woman's career.

It is worth noting that Aimee Semple McPherson by virtue of her era could never have been considered a useful puppet for fronting a shadow government. Palin is much better positioned because there is less negative aspects to being female and media hype is advanced to really exploit her physical advantages.

Aimee Semple McPherson appears to have been control of her destiny much of the time. Palin is a product of her puppeteer's strings.

I find it difficult to think Palin will be running for an office of any kind. She loves the limelight, and detest work. She hired an administrator to do the mayor's job in Wasilla. She quit the governship because it was too hard.

Also, running a national campaign takes LOTS of organization. She's not going to organize anything (too much work), and she's stabbed in the back any repugs who had any knowledge of running a national campaign.

Gryphen, when you take her down, do it at her pinnacle, when she thinks she's close to the brass ring, when she salivating with victory. Pull out the rug and watch her drop like a rock!

Back when the Rodney King beating happened, followed then by the riots, I had a conversation with my 70 year old mother that I thought our country was going to be torn apart by the races, gang wars, and rich versus poor. She looked at me and said "no, religion is going to tear this country apart". She died before the Sept 11th attacks but I could hear those words echo in my head as all the religious verbiage that was yelled and threatened from the christian side to the islamic side and all the garbage and misinformation inbetween. Listening to Bush talk about the war as a crusade, seeing that Rumsfeld added religous text in the military's operation manuals, and hearing Cheney's constance drumbeat talk of good versus evil all helped stoke the fires of hatred and misunderstanding of any religious belief beyond the christian rightousness. The call to arms in belief that they are saving the mother country and the human race as we know it, according to their outlook of course. Palin is the latest puppet in the religious call to total dominance of the almighty white god, played by the strings of alot of old white guys that don't want to share the power of the pulpit. Palin's lies will catch up with her hopefully sooner than later - Gryphen, your sources are needed to come forward now?!?!? - but she already has a following that will go with her to he77 and back. She is their false leader who speaks to god directly and quite frankly, not much is going to break that bond.

I have a question I've been pondering here--
SP seems to have two groups of puppet masters-the right wing Christian Fundies and the more cosmopolitan Neo-Cons (both with deep pockets). At what point might there be a parting of the ways between these two-- i.e., how long can the Bill Kristol types take the theocrats seriously (while laughing at them privately)? At what point will the theocrats be seen as a threat to the Kristols and the Guiliani-type urban GOPers ? I don't mean the reaction of the mainstream GOP to the teabaggers, I am talking about a covert battle between the puppet masters.

Re: Dawn, Naked Truth, et al:

if Jesus had known his words would, through John, and ultimately millions of misguided armchair theologians like you, be so misconstrued, after baptism by John, he would have said, "No comment" and never uttered a single word.

The book of Revelation is NOT a vision of Armageddon, it is literary vision not a sermon or horatory written to empower Christians in Asia Minor who were still being persecuted by the Roman emperor, Domition, who's rule was one of terror and during which there were mass executions of Christians. It was SYMBOLIC and POETIC, not historical or prophetic.

Many Christians living under Domition experienced unbearable suffering and deprivation--which was a seeming contradiction of the promises of the kingdom which would be theirs upon conversion. Thus, John (and numerous, anonymous "ghostwriters") subsequently made an attempt by the use of strong, visceral imagery to encourage the persecuted that the "contradiction" was not "permanent and unbearable.

The hate you feel Palin--and which is incubated by Gryphen--is hardly
hardly surprising, Just as the Book of Revelation with its symbolism allowed for a catharsis in the minds of believers who were consumed by fear, remorse, and anger, the symbolic role Palin plays in your lives is achieving the same end: it permits you to externalize deep-seated resentments and fears which quite likely, given your personal histories, could not be addressed in any other way.

Your disproportionate and irrational contempt for Palin ironically represents the collective mindset of the last Roman emperors who attempted to ward off the fall of the Roman empire by attributing the Roman empires inner rot and moral degradation to external elements.

I think religion is just a part of this, as much as we want to focus on it exclusively. I wrote this on another blog, and this is where my thinking rests now: Another thing to watch, if Sarah Palin is allowed to go to Fort Hood, of all places, the MSM really needs to look into it. Her bus has political fundraising information on it, and from what I understand this is against Army policy. I think we need to remember, Sarah Palin is probably being supported from the shadows by a scary alliance of Neocons (read: oil industry business interests + arms industry interests) and End Timer Christian Fundamentalists. That's a dangerous combination if ever there was one. Approval for access to military bases may be coming from higher up than we'd want to believe. Presdident Obama gets this; he said we weren't going to stay in Afghanistan or anywhere else to "make money". Can you imagine being in his shoes, being up against the nefarious forces I am talking about? These people need the US to have enemies around the world so that they can keep making billions on WAR. Eisenhower said it himself, "In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.
"We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together."

They will talk to every one they can find that knows you. Who in her past will give her high recommendations? I believe she has burned most of those bridges. Also, too, one of the key factors to be granted a security clearance is being honest in your answers. This means she will have to disclose everything, and I mean everything to the investigators. If they detect one instance of deception or untruth you are denied. So, what are the odds she will tell the truth about anything?

Oh yes, I can see Sister Sarah bible thumping on the radio no problem. That may be exactly the direction she's heading. All of her political shortfalls and baggage will have no effect there. And it's perfect for her monetary mindset. I don't know of any of those Televangelical megachurch ministers that are hurting for money. George H W and W Bush both have strong connection to the Moonies, who very conveniently own the Washington Times. Sarah is being groomed by many of the same people who promoted W. These are the same ruthless operatives who over the years savaged their opponents with brutal tactics - for example the scurrillous rumors about McCain's adopted daughter. These Republican operatives have turned campaigns into a blood sport. Google Roger Ailes, Karl Rove and Lee Atwater and campaign tactics to learn more. I have mentioned in several sites that in Texas for years, the far right has been electing stealth candidates (they lie about their political positions until elected) in school boards, city councils and even library boards. The last ten to 15 years they aren’t bothering with the stealth part.

Unless the fundies are funded by multiple Murdochs, I don't think big businesses, the ones that really run the governments of the world, would let them take over the government. Right now the fundies are being used to keep Repocons in office. The fundies have enough millions to finance a lot of individual targeted races, but not a truly unified party.

Keeping in mind that even the Catholics slaughter their own, Christian sects don't seem to be able to form lasting partnerships, and their leaders are just as vain and just as whiney as Sarah herself. Also, too the more fundamental they are the less they will compromise to another group, even a Christian one.

I doubt they will take over, but if they make a serious long term down and dirty try it will be very very ugly. And very unChrist like.

I can actually see them doing bloody riots and murdering numerous people though, and that is scary, because you can’t actually relay on the police or military to not take sides or ignore, or even join in.
