Sarah Palin calls climate research "snake oil" and demands President Obama boycott Copenhagen conference. Are you serious lady?

The president’s decision to attend the international climate conference in Copenhagen needs to be reconsidered in light of the unfolding Climategate scandal. (This is a "scandal" only in the minds of those whose agenda is to undermine the research being done by climatologists. As Media Matters has pointed out the e-mails are being taken out of context and misinterpreted. This is NOT accidental.)The leaked e-mails involved in Climategate expose the unscientific behavior of leading climate scientists who deliberately destroyed records to block information requests, manipulated data to “hide the decline” in global temperatures, and conspired to silence the critics of man-made global warming. I support Senator James Inhofe’s call for a full investigation into this scandal. Because it involves many of the same personalities and entities behind the Copenhagen conference, Climategate calls into question many of the proposals being pushed there, including anything that would lead to a cap and tax plan.

Climategate? Does Sarah Palin REALLY want to have her name attached to a post that supports some kind of "gate"? Does she really want to open THAT can of worms? Well if THAT is fair game then perhaps we should revisit some of Sarah's multiple "gates". Such as "Dairygate", or "Religiongate", or "Prisongate", or " Troopergate", or how about a personal favorite of mine, "Babygate"? Oops did you forget about those Sarah? Well guess what. We haven't!

And speaking of "opening a can of worms" Palin is now "palling around" with the last "flat-earther" in the Senate. Senator Inhofe's crazy rantings against climate change has caused him to be marginalized, and in some instances ostracised, by his fellow senators, and yet Palin has no problem citing him as a credible critic of the work done by these scientists. Good choice Sarah.

Policy should be based on sound science, not snake oil. (Did she really refer to the decades of peer reviewed scientific research into climate change as "snake oil"? Isn't this the scientific wizard who claims the earth is only 10,000 years old? And did she not write THIS passage in her new book? “But I didn’t believe in the theory that human beings—thinking, loving beings—originated from fish that sprouted legs and crawled out of the sea. Or that human beings began as single-celled organisms that developed into monkeys who eventually swung down from trees; I believed we came about not through a random process, but were created by God.” Is THAT the scientifically inquisitive mind we want to trust when it comes to defining the difference between "snake oil" science and "real" science? I am just asking.) I took a stand against such snake oil science when I sued the federal government over its decision to list the polar bear as an endangered species despite the fact that the polar bear population has increased. (This is a story that has been debunked repeatedly and yet Sarah still uses it as if it were factual.)I’ve never denied the reality of climate change; (No, just the science that determined the source of that climate change: A changing environment will affect Alaska more than any other state, because of our location. I'm not one though who would attribute it to being man-made.”) in fact, I was the first governor to create a subcabinet position to deal specifically with the issue. I saw the impact of changing weather patterns firsthand while serving as governor of our only Arctic state. But while we recognize the effects of changing water levels, erosion patterns, and glacial ice melt, we cannot primarily blame man’s activities for the earth’s cyclical weather changes. The drastic economic measures being pushed by dogmatic environmentalists won’t change the weather, but will dramatically change our economy for the worse.

In other words ANY science which keeps oil companies from accessing that sweet, sweet bubbly crude, under the pristine Alaska tundra, is at loggerheads with Sarah "drill baby, drill" Palin's acceptable definition of "real" science. She classifies it as "snake oil" if it does not allow her to safely retain her beliefs, or to get her way. "What? Eating piles of Atkins bars and washing them down with Red Bull is not a nutritionally sound diet for a middle aged woman? Well by God, I hereby declare that "snake oil" science. Hand me another one of those Chocolate Coconut bars will you Piper?

Policy decisions require real science and real solutions, not junk science and doomsday scare tactics (Yeah don't you just hate all of those "doomsday scare tactics"? Like that whole Rapture, End of Days, idea. How crazy is that?) pushed by an environmental priesthood that capitalizes on the public’s worry and makes them feel that owning an SUV is a “sin” against the planet. (I agree with sister Sarah on this point. Owning an SUV is NOT a sin. A sin would be breaking one of the Ten Commandments, like...oh I don't know..."Thou shalt not commit adultery", like when Sarah was banging Brad Hanson. And "Thou shalt not steal", like when she is always taking money from the people who donate to SarahPAC and not doing anything for them in return. Or "Thou shalt not bear false witness against your neighbor", like when Sarah accused Obama of "palling around" with terrorists. Remember that? So no, owning an SUV is not a sin, however listening to Sarah Palin MIGHT be.)In his inaugural address, President Obama declared his intention to “restore science to its rightful place.” Boycotting Copenhagen while this scandal is thoroughly investigated would send a strong message that the United States government will not be a party to fraudulent scientific practices. Saying no to Copenhagen and cap and tax are first steps in “restoring science to its rightful place.”

- Sarah Palin

This is almost too stupid to address, but since it is expected let me make this short.

Wrong, wrong, wrong you fucking imbecile! The effects of climate change have been studied by numerous scientist, of all nationalities and scientific disciplines for over two hundred years. The facts are in, and the findings are conclusive, climate change is real and humans have definitely contributed to it. The idea that a handful of e-mails, taken out of context and used to smear decades of scientific research, should signal an end to the United States participation in this important event is insane. Only a person with a serious ment....oh yeah, I almost forgot who I was talking about.

Well anyway, once again Palin has demonstrated an incredible lack of intelligence married to an out of control ego. I cannot believe people are still taking this woman seriously.

Update: Here is a little more information on the tactics being utilized by the climate change deniers: For thirty years, defenders of a pollution-based economy have intimidated, smeared, and suppressed climate science, using a playbook perfected by the tobacco industry and Karl Rove. Now — as the United States, led by President Barack Obama, finally appears ready to join the world in the fight against global warming — the opponents of reform are resorting to criminal desperation, harkening back to the paranoia-fueled extremes of Richard Nixon.

Interesting no?

(H/T to Gail.)

  3. Those emails are not taken out of context and are very damning. There are and have always been qualified scientists who have not towed the party line on global warming, and yet they are squelched and insulted.
There's no use behaving like Palinbots when the evidence is jarring and against what we have invested ourselves in.

Palin's words about Obama and Copenhagen were reasonable and well-written, so I don't know who actually wrote it. Not her of course.

It sure is funny, Sistah Sarah latches herself into everything anti Obama, and none of her rantings are her own original ideas. She takes news stories and addsher simple wordings for her flock to fawn over. Lady, go home. Raise that adopted son of yours and get an education. Maybe in twenty years you'll be capable of carrying Barack Obamas luggage.

You are right. Palin IS a fucking imbecile. And she denies Global Warming not because she doesn't believe it, but because she has to stay with her base of idiots and GREED. She wants that campaign money for when she thinks she'll be running for Preznut.

Palin is a joke of epic proportion. I really, really wish that the good people of Alaska would stand strong(er) and let it all loose about the whackjob from Wasilla. where another series of thefts and attempted thefts have occurred. This to me it is clear evidence that the faux outrage at some cherry-picked emails is being professionally orchestrated and funded by fossil fuel corporate interests. Impersonating tech servicemen? This is really scary stuff. Sarah is an idiot but she agitates flat-earthers like onething who are too lazy to read enough actual science to understand that although there are many unknowns, the fundamentals of the greenhouse effect are pretty simple and so is the fact of ocean acidification. CO2 + H20 = carbonic acid and that's killing the tiny shellfish at the bottom of the food chain. ALREADY. And that means the fish in the middle and the top of the food chain are going to die, and that means total ecosystem collapse...and did you know most of the oxygen we breathe comes from life in the sea?

First, it's not suprising that the small-minded see everything in black and white. Nothing that has been revealed discounts the fact that global warning is real.

Second, even without global warming, it makes more sense to invest in alternative energy. It is cheaper (or at least has the potential to be), it is less damaging to the earth, it's cleaner. But I suppose it's more important that we are beholden to oil companies and continue to dig shit out of the earth to power our lives.

I wonder why she cannot comprehend that a few degrees in water temp could end salmon runs as you know it.

I'm in Austin. The weather in the past 2-3 years has been really REALLY weird. Droughts the past 3 yrs, and then this past week, SNOW... in Central Tx and Houston... and first EVER this early in the season.

People-- it's NOT global warming... it's "change".

Face it... the body of Earth, Terra, is it's own living being. It's comprised of various compounds, gases and organisms. It's its own biosphere and we just happen to reside on it. And Terra is pissed off right now!

It changes and (omg!) evolves just like the rest of the living world as well as changes to it's environment. And today, it's environment is being screwed up by us... humans. Just look at the mankind produced trash we leave in our oceans, our lands and our outer space. We trash everything so WE don't have to deal with it. Think about it.

Just look around you and you will see the damage we humans do on a daily basis to our world. It's quite sad.

Although I do not post three or four times a day like the hard-blogging Gryphen, I keep a blog too and I can tell you, typos, misspellings and other goofs are my bane. When I read back, my head knows what I meant to write and it is so easy to mentally insert the correct wording while physically leaving the incorrect in.

I think, given how much he blogs, Gryph does an amazingly good job in this regard. While perfection would be nice, it is for mediums other than blogging.

You have two choices - perfection or immediacy. Are you really going to be there each time to proofread one minute after he writes his post?

While a few bloggers may have the cash to hire someone to do just that, I think most don't. I also think it best to accept the medium for what it is and not to get hung up on a few typos and misspellings.

Heck, just the body heat of 6.8+ trillion people should have some affect on the world's environment. Sadly, there are those who don't care about the environment at all. Or whether or not future generations inherit a healthy environment. It's all about how much money can be stuffed in pockets before Judgment Day.

You know, the end of this world happens for each when the breath of life returns to God. As far as the end of times, not even the angels in heaven know.

Cherry picked emails out of context? They were out of context like Bristol's comment that abstinence is unrealistic was out of context - NOT. Yes, the most relevant ones were selected out of many to show what has been happening but the meaning of them is quite clear. The perpetrators are guilty of obstructing science, abusing peer-review, fudging data, noncomplicance with freedom of information laws, and have lied to the world. And they do have an agenda. Power, prestige, and millions in grants. They will and must be prosecuted.

Scientists are human beings just like the rest of us, and they need to be held to account because science otherwise becomes corrupt.

None of the above has anything to do with the good reasons to stop polluting. So far as I can tell we have passed peak oil anyway, and will need to develop new, clean energy technologies. But it would be good to remember that co2 is not a pollutant but is as vital to life as oxygen.

WTF!?!?!?!? Why would ANYONE even acknowledge anything that Sarah Palin had to say regarding anything within the realm of science? The woman is a imbecilic clod who wouldn’t recognize science if it bit her in the ass. Palin is a mental pygmy who has no concept of what science, empiricism, and peer review actually mean. She is unencumbered by facts or even by the thought process itself and with an imperious wave of her royal scepter she declares global warming “snake oil.”

“Global warming could not possibly exist because I had to turn my furnace up much higher than normal this fall. Where is all this warming? I’m not warm.”

We should place about as much stock in Palin’s pronouncements on science as we would Carrie Prejean’s musings on ethics, morality, and veracity. When it comes to any subject which involves extensive thought, Palin should by default be excluded from the debate for her chronic paucity of cognition.

The problem is that a whopping 97% of scientists surveyed believe that global warming is real and that it is manmade. These are the people that are most able to interpret the available scientific data. On the basis of stolen e-mails alone, Palin decides that they negate ALL available scientific data. Do we know that those who stole the e-mail did not alter it to suit their ends? The e-mails reveal the candid manner in which scientists correspond with one another outside the scientific journals. Nothing more.

Let’s examine what was NOT in the e-mails in question. There are no smoking guns. They did not reveal any vast multinational liberal conspiracy to concoct a nonexistent theory of manmade global warming. They do not reveal ANY link to George Soros bankrolling any such a scheme. They do not expose any nefarious liberal plot to expand the size of government through increased spending. Nothing in the e-mails negates the decades of data and research which all STILL support the irrefutable fact of manmade global warming.

For decades, global warming deniers would not even concede that there was any data which supported the very existence of global warming. For the entire eight years Bush was in office he tried - with some success - to suppress government sponsored scientific findings which supported man made global warming. They continued that tactic until the data was so overwhelming that they could no longer plausibly deny at least the existence of global warming. Now, they merely deny that it is manmade. They contend that it is natural and cyclical and really nothing to worry about at all. It’s funny how that natural cycle just happens to neatly coincide with the industrial revolution.

If these asshats succeed in getting us to slow walk toward a solution, we are officially fucked. If they are wrong and they succeed in stalling efforts to stop global warming, the earth becomes a very different, very much more hostile environment. If 97% of scientists are wrong and Sarah Palin is right, if we needlessly combat nonexistent global warming we will have wasted money, but we’ll still be able to live on this planet. If it turns out that the smartest people in the world were right and the peawit Tundra Twit was wrong, but we listened to her instead of to them, we will be living - or not - in a literal hell hole.

Hmmm, tough choice. Listen to the uninformed, dithering, narcissistic, halfwit goober who can’t coordinate bus and plane schedules or listen to the smart people with lots of graduate degrees, years of successful research, professorships at prestigious universities, and generally a collective ability to speak and write coherently. What to do, what to do?

If I am betting MY ass on who is right in that battle of wits, I’ll go with the folks who came to the contest armed.

Palin’s idiocy is exceeded only by her arrogance and her hubris.

I wonder why she thinks people would fabricate the concept of global warming. What would be the purpose? We know the purpose of DENYING global warming, but I can't imagine what rationale would be used to concoct a theory that our global warming is real, a threat to our planet and that human beings are, at least partially, responsible.
