Geoffrey Dunn is simply not buying Meg Stapleton's excuse for leaping off of the Sarah Palin bandwagon.

In what was a truly disgusting bit of reporting today in Politico, news puppy Andy Barr, a shameless apologist for Palin these past 16 months, confirmed the rumor that Stapleton, Palin's longtime "spokesperson" and political assassin, was departing her $96,000-a-year position as a consultant to SarahPAC, though Barr never managed to set any of the significant facts in place.

Instead, Barr spun it exactly as Stapleton wanted it woven--as a move "to spend more time with her husband and 2-year-old daughter, Isabella."

Perhaps you'd also like to buy some land from young Andy in Florida.

Geoffrey has been writing his book "The Lies of Sarah Palin: The Untold Story Behind her Relentless Quest for Power" for many, many months now, and may know as much, if not more, than even the Alaska bloggers about the skeletons in Palin's closet.

He also knows quite a bit about Meghan Stapleton and how viciously she defended her boss and how aggressively she went after those who dared call Palin out on her bullshit.

Anyhow if you click the title of this post Geoffrey will give you a behind the scenes tour of Meg Stapleton's scorched earth approach to protecting the ex-governor.

And while we are on the topic of Sarah I cannot resist adding this absolutely stunning smackdown from Jeb Bush:

Bush praises her “charisma” but then says that she needs to add to this “some depth of understanding of the complexity of life”. She has an “innate ability to communicate and connect with folks” but seems to feel that that’s pretty much it. If she could build on that with, er, understanding of and insight into the world then she could be an “incredible candidate”.

That may be one of the gentlest way I have ever heard anybody say: "Oh that woman is an idiot!"

By the way, for those keeping score, Palin has still not said one word about Stapleton's departure.

Meg is a piece of work. After what she did to Walt Monegan and the overthrow of Mat Maid management, I am done with her. Honorable, honest people discarded all to make her Queen look good makes me sick. Go crawl in your hole, Meghan Stapleton. You are an evil person

  6. the comment by Jeb, coupled with the comment by Darth Cheney last week, and several rightwing bigwigs is what leads me to disagree with those who have theorized that the ouster of Meg is some attempt by the Big Boys to polish Sarah up to the next level.

Geoffrey Dunn's piece clarified the role Meg played over the years. I wasn't aware of how nasty Meg could be. I simply thought that most of what she said came straight from Palin so didn't know that Meg was a soul-sister of Sistah Sarah. I can't wait for Dunn's book!

I wonder if Meg got blamed for the mishandling of the Rush Limbaugh "retard" issue. When confronted about the Limbaugh segment her response was that its use was mean no matter where it came from. Then Sarah had to backpeddle and say that it was satire. Sarah's cachet really plummeted at that point. It seemed people from all sides of the political fence were feeling more willing to be open about calling her out. Then the Family Guy thing happened no long after. Bad month for someone's self-esteem.

Maybe while Meg got screamed at, she decided this was a good time to exit. The little dig at the end about not wanting her daughter to beg to have a mommy says a lot.

  18. kellygirl, don't be so sure that the Republican establishment is ready to give up on Sarah Palin, or already has.

Bill O'Reilly was on "Good Morning America" this morning, and the report of his remarks about Sarah Palin go like this:

As for frequent "O'Reilly Factor" guest Sarah Palin, O'Reilly says she absolutely wants to run but has to weigh whether she wants to put her family through the process. And, he added, she needs to study up.

"Sarah Palin needs to go to college," O'Reilly said. "Political college, world affairs college, and she is [doing that]. She's hired a bunch of advisers and they're giving her a whole bunch of tracks (sic -- should be "tracts") to learn, because it is a sophisticated deal."

The fact that Palin herself has not even made the slightest mention of Stapleton’s departure is telling. If it really was for the reasons that Stapleton has indicated, Palin should have been praising her former mouthpiece. I mean, isn’t Palin CONSTANTLY reminding us all how IMPORTANT THE FAMILY IS?

Here is a twofer installment for “Quote of Day for Sarah.” At the rate that events are unfolding, I may not need too many more, so I best toss them out while Palin is still at least marginally a public figure. They both seemed appropriate on the occasion of Stapleton’s departure.

Sarah dear, now please pay attention:

“Magnanimity in politics is not seldom the truest wisdom; and a great empire and little minds go ill together.” - Edmund Burke

    and,

“It's said that if you can't say something good about a dead person, don't say it. Well, I consider [her] dead.” - Thurgood Marshall

The last one was originally about George Bush I, but seemingly equally apropos for Mrs. Palin on this occasion. Maybe Palin simply views Stapleton as being dead to her.

My perception is that today's "GOP" is not what it used to be.

It began to fracture back in the days when the "Moral Majority" was introduced into politics. At that point, what had been a fiscally conservative party began to be a fiscal/social conservative party. In 1981, those who considered themselves "social" conservatives organized, and with that organization, it became stronger with regard to their impact on the GOP.

This organization was the brainchild of Tim LaHaye. He was co-author of the left behind series. And, from its inception, this social conservative organization included many fundamentalist faces. James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Ted Haggard, etc.

Among the basic tenants (whether or not these people actually "believe" it, or just find it an effective way to gain control) is the end of the world senario. Because of this point of view, this group welcomed the neo-cons with open arms. Eric Prince of Blackwater fame, for example. The goals are those of Bill Kristol, Cheney, and ultimately GWB (whose self-styled, born again religious point of view and laziness when it comes to intellect made him an easy mark for the goal of the religionists and neocons).

Meanwhile, the fiscally conservative Republicans were swallowed up in the whirlwind of the fundamentalist/neocon plan of action--which was to focus on Israel and the middle east--i.e. Iraq, etc. and a move toward a theocratic government here at home.

Sarah Palin's political views were nurtured before she became mayor. Derek Clark/AIP, when he spoke to several secessionists, made the remark that Sarah was a member of AIP, before becoming mayor. His advice to the people he was speaking to was to run for office, either way, D or R. It didn't matter. Just get elected and go from there. SP ran for Governor as a Republican, and if the emails are any indication, Todd Palin, AIP member, ran the show.

Stapleton and the Palins/social conservatives recently and obviously locked horns on whether or not Rush Limbaugh's ranting regarding "retards" was acceptable. Rush Limbaugh is a mass communication mouth piece, whose sole purpose is to control the thinking of the masses, specifically the mind set of the social conservative masses.

Although Stapleton may have reached the point of no return, herself, where SP is concerned--the fact that she failed to back up Limbaugh (and therefore the social concervative/neocon puppeteers) may have been the proverbial nuts on the sundae...and I do mean, "nuts.

    Just my point of view.

Anyone republican who thinks that Palin is actually LEARNING world affairs, etc will be sadly disappointed....she will be MEMORIZING new talking points fed to her by a fancier team of advisers & neocons & theocrats.

    Nancy B.,
Nice run down on the GOP, but the cancer within that party goes back MUCH further than that. The moral decline of the GOP began at least with McCarthy and his destructive politics of innuendo and unsubstantiated rumor. The inexorable descent of the GOP into perfidy has continued unabated since.

In 1950 Margaret Chase Smith, R Sen. from Maine warned of the dangers of nascent McCarthyism when she said, "I don’t want to see the Republican Party ride to political victory on the Four Horsemen of Calumny—Fear, Ignorance, Bigotry, and Smear." Yet, the GOP has been ever atop those mounts since.

Aren't those four horsemen simply the four pillars of the teabagger creed today?

The GOP is a loathsome collection of mean spirited, lying, mental Lilliputians who would do long term damage to this country in order to achieve transient partisan gain. They are simply dangerous and incompatible with democracy.

Frankly, I'll miss Meg. She had great instincts for focusing attention on Palin's many shortcomings. And who can forget her conversation with a reporter on the flight back to Anchorage from Palin's fish camp last summer in which she laid out the Obama conspiracy that was behind the ethics complaints against Palin. Wonder what the 'bots have to say about BOR's comments. After all, they think she is more than ready, willing and able today. How will they take to hearing that their Queen needs to study prior to running for office? Have we ever heard that about any other possible candidate? The things they are trying to teach are IMO not those types of things that can be taught. They are views you accumulate from years of reading various books, newspapers, magazines and watching a variety of news programs along with specials regarding world affairs. You can't learn these things unless you're seriously interested in them and $P is not. She is only thinking about the power that comes with the office.

All I have to do is think of how President Obama schooled the members of the House and Senate a few weeks ago, answering their questions without benefit of notes or teleprompter simply because he has the intelligence and knowledge to do so. Can anyone in their right mind ever imagine SP doing what he did????

The GOP has also cut her loose which apparently BOR doesn't see or doesn't want to admit. She would not be having Cheney, Haley Barbour and Jeb Bush on TV refusing to say she was ready for the presidency. They would be proclaiming her "more than capable", "brilliant" and other adjectives that we never think of in conjunction with Palin. They don't want to come right out and say it isn't going to happen because they see her as a useful tool to bring the tea party groups to the GOP. After that, she loses all credibility.

I am sad to hear the news about Meg. I follow the saga of Palin like a daily soap opera. Palin’s character is a con artist fraud who is fooling all the other dimwitted characters on the show. Like a soap opera, the story is moving way to slow and I feel like we are constantly on the cusp of her being revealed to the other characters for the grifter that we the viewers know she is, but alas I have to wait to tune in tomorrow. Meg was such an important part of the show for me. She never failed to fuel the fire with snarky and hilarious responses. Part of what makes Palin entertaining is that she never seemed to get a clue, like when she didn’t find out what the job of vice president was between the time she didn’t know the first time and still didn’t understand the second time she was asked. Dumping Meg is not a good turn of events because it indicates that Palin finally got a clue and I worry about the continuing entertainment value of Palin to me.

There is definitely something wrong with the Trig story. Between Bristol not attending school for months prior to the birth, the wild ride, and Sarah Palin’s pregnancy that seems to have started 3 weeks prior to the birth - something is amiss. There are two questions. Did she fake the pregnancy and would she fake a pregnancy? She has shown that she has no scruples and is capable of pulling off this fraud for whatever reason and the evidence indicates that it is possible she did actually pull it off. If Trig is Bristol’s baby or some other underage person’s baby, that makes a much better cautionary tale against teen pregnancy. Bristol grins from ear to ear and gushes about how her baby (Trip) is the best thing that ever happened to her while raking in more money than most families make in ten years. Fortunately my daughters don’t look to Bristol as a life coach because I don’t want my kids buying what she’s selling. I find that many if not most teen pregnancies are planned. My daughter told me a disturbing story about a freshman at her school sharing the good news that she was pregnant and her friends high fiving her and squealing with glee. I live in the San Francisco bay area and there are many pregnant teens at my daughter’s school. It’s a very costly problem for a bankrupt state like ours. If Trig is Bristol’s baby, then telling the truth may actually make teens realize that they could have a baby that isn’t their fantasy baby and may require more from them than they are capable of giving at that age. This story is much better for convincing teens to use birth control or abstinence to defer parenthood than the ridiculous story Bristol is now presenting.

I want this soap opera to come to an end with the complete disgrace of this narcissist, Sarah Palin. I feel bad for the rubes who are being used by her and who are handing over their limited funds to her and buying her book. I look forward to Geoffrey Dunne’s book and hope he has some juice in it. If not I will just have to wait for time and alcohol to make the secrets finally spill out.

It seems that, although he was the GOP VP nominee in 1948, he was too progressive for the Birchers. They were miffed about the Courts' movement forward in the areas of segregation, civil rights, oh and...the separation of church and state.

I guess Griffen missed this story:

ANCHORAGE - A federal judge has denied a motion to reconsider his dismissal of a lawsuit alleging that former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin violated the plaintiffs' constitutional rights by failing to issue a proclamation in 2007 for a celebration commemorating the freeing of U.S. slaves.

U.S. District Judge Timothy Burgess issued the ruling this week.

Plaintiffs Gregory Charles Royal of Washington, D.C., and Eagle River resident Kim Chatman filed their motion in January, saying they had just learned the Juneteenth proclamation was issued - as required by state law - retroactively just before Palin's resignation last July.

Chatman filed an ethics complaint last year that alleged Palin misused the governor's office for personal gain by securing unwarranted benefits and receiving improper gifts through a legal defense fund. The case has not been publicly resolved.

You know the most ridiculous part? If Todd manned up and parented those kids, rather than bulling his way into his wife's professional life, they could have been raised properly. Why was he watching his wife appear on a talk show while his 15-yr old daughter was being arrested for trespassing and under-age drinking? (And when is the hearing date for THAT, hmm?) Why isn't Piper in school, eating dinner at home with Dad, while Mom is on the trail?

I don't think any woman needs to remain at home, if she has a partner who will handle the work at home. Palin has every right (if not the actual ability) to make a career and money in the lower 48. But by abandoning her children, taking Todd as her attendant instead of his staying to provide adult supervision and keep the education on track?

At last, Sarah Palin speaks on a subject of which she is an expert... PERFUMING A PIG!

The silence or the Palinistas is like that of a Winter storm, just before it goes gale force. Can't wait to see what they will come up with or will they dig in and hide out for a couple of months hoping things will die down, like Tiger Woods.

Dunn was right. Sarah and Meg are two of a kind, 96 grand a year is a huge chunk of chump change to walk away from, but she considered that the grifter makes more than that for one speech, while she's left with the pooper scooper and spin work whenever Sarah opens her mouth.

At first, I believed she genuinely cared for her daughter and felt guilty for being away, but after thinking it over and seeing how vicious she truly became, it's obvious she wanted more from Sarah, and Sarah greedily refused.

Meg, how does it feel to sell your soul to the devil? You've ruined your reputation and lost all respect, even from Sarah herself. Sarah NEVER lets a chance to make herself look pained and victimized. Your loyalty means nothing to her, she's carved her niche with her base because of you, and now you're trash.

  60. Bill O'Reilly says she needs to go back to college.

He qualified himself by saying "political college".

Yeah, she needs to get schooled all right.

He claims she's studying up now. Somehow I'm thinking....not so much.

  61. This could be a sign of a new direction in her political strategy, most likely originating from her new advisors. Sarah would do just about anything to run for president.

  63. Sarah is proof positive of the old adage, "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear!"

(no matter how many millions old Rupert sinks into the bottomless pits that Sarahtoxin digs herself into!

Narcissist sociopathy does not ALLOW such a person to learn and analyse. It is not possible. No matter how much money is paid to them. There may be organic physical brain defects which cause such personality disorders or not. I don't believe it is known. These pathological personalities would never allow a brain scan in any case. It's not fun and kind of an insult to the superego pathologic personality. Rules, like learning, don't apply to a superperson.
