Texas Board of Education chooses ideology over education.

After three days of turbulent meetings, the Texas Board of Education on Friday approved a social studies curriculum that will put a conservative stamp on history and economicstextbooks, stressing the superiority of American capitalism, questioning the Founding Fathers’ commitment to a purely secular government and presenting Republican political philosophies in a more positive light.

The vote was 10 to 5 along party lines, with all the Republicans on the board voting for it.

The board, whose members are elected, has influence beyond Texas because the state is one of the largest buyers of textbooks. In the digital age, however, that influence has diminished as technological advances have made it possible for publishers to tailor books to individual states.

In recent years, board members have been locked in an ideological battle between a bloc of conservatives who question Darwin’s theory of evolution and believe the Founding Fathers were guided by Christian principles, and a handful of Democrats and moderate Republicans who have fought to preserve the teaching of Darwinism and the separation of church and state.

Since January, Republicans on the board have passed more than 100 amendments to the 120-page curriculum standards affecting history, sociology and economics courses from elementary to high school. The standards were proposed by a panel of teachers.

There are seven members of the conservative bloc on the board, but they are often joined by one of the other three Republicans on crucial votes. There were no historians, sociologists or economists consulted at the meetings, though some members of the conservative bloc held themselves out as experts on certain topics.

The conservative members maintain that they are trying to correct what they see as a liberal bias among the teachers who proposed the curriculum. To that end, they made dozens of minor changes aimed at calling into question, among other things, concepts like the separation of church and state and the secular nature of the American Revolution.

And the dumbing down of our American schoolchildren continues.

Now if they can ensure that these children grow up on a strict diet of Dominionist Christian teaching and Fox News approved information they can rest assured of raising a generation that will eagerly follow whichever political party makes them fear for their safety the most.

Forget critical thinking, forget religious diversity, and forget equal rights for all.

It will be replaced with "believe, don't think", "Christianity is the only true path to salvation", and "equal rights are more equal for some than for others."

Welcome to Amerika.

Any suggestions on what we can do to stop the spread of this nonsense?

  4. Well Laura you could run for a School Board seat in Texas. Or simply make sure to teach your children the truth that the textbooks are leaving out.

And this is why Boards of ED should not be elected by the general public.

When I was a kid (a very long time ago) my parents went to every BofEd meeting, always battling one member who never wanted to improve anything. He kept insisting that if the old ways were good enough for him, they should be good enough for his kids. He was a farmer who never finished high school.

How long do we have to watch unqualified people get elected to boards and make life altering decisions for our nation's kids?

Well go ahead, Texas. And when universities across the country stop accepting your high school grads, you'll only have yourselves to blame. Your kids will be working at Walmarts and gas stations. Mine will be in college.

I just read in the Ft Worth Star Telegram that this is tentative and the final vote will be in May. Seems the national attention wasn't what was expected.

Even though Perry and Palin would like everyone to think Texas is solidly a red state, it isn't. The Republicans are pushing their agenda because Texas is turning blue in the larger areas. The Gov's race is not locked up by Perry. It is viewed as a toss-up between Perry and Bill White. Both of White's parents were teachers. Republicans are clinging wherever they can--- even with textbooks. Hopefully Texas will have a Dem governor in Nov.

My neighborhood has a Baptist church on one corner and a mosque on the other. My neighbors are from the US, India, Jordan, Mexico, Nigeria, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc. My mayor is African American. This is the Texas and America that I know now. It is different than when I grew up but I like it so much better this way.--I don't know why these Republican whackos ever get elected but know it can't last forever with such a diverse population.

I read somewhere that if Oklahoma is to liberal for ya move to Texas.

As an educator, I'm virtually speechless. What bothers me most is the ability to affect textbooks that OTHER states will use. If Texans want to remain ignorant, so be it, but other states have NOT made this ruling and it should NOT affect anyone else who does not feel as TX does.

Okay, maybe I'm not so speechless.

I believe these kinds of school boards are being influenced, also, by the christianist homeschoolers.

With many homeschoolers, it's always a christianist POV. When you go to the "homeschooling" sites that are well organized, you will see exactly what I mean.

This does not bode well for developing an open minded, truly educated human being.

  14. So many people think homeschoolers are all Christian, but there are more secular/freethinking homeschoolers than folks realize for this very reason. Conservative school districts is one of the reasons freethinking parents homeschool. It's one of the reasons we homeschool. We live in a rural school district where it's not at all uncommon for teachers to make religious remarks in the classroom. This kind of thing could easily happen in my "neck of the woods" so to speak.

I just hope the "liberal" teachers do the right thing in this case and rebel by refusing to help the right indoctrinate their students.

Hey, Gryphen. Texas has one glimmering hope. In November, the voters can choose Democrat Bill White over Republican Rick Perry for governor. If Bill wins, Texas government will move away from the rightwing ideologues of Perry and his cronies and other bedfellows.

Bill served Houston well as its mayor for the past three terms. He is a man who gets things done and works quietly with all the people. He is honest and honorable, and he's the best candidate for governor in a number of years. He also prioritizes education since both of his parents were teachers, and he's done well dealing with that area of concern before.

I'm hopeful that Governor Bill White will bring needed changes to the state, including some way to address the creationists rewriting history and inflicting their religious lies and beliefs on our schoolchildren.

So don't count us out just yet. Let's see what happens in November.

SallynGarlandTx, Morgan and Elsie: thanks for sharing, and reminding us that you can't paint all Texans in an ideological corner. And Homeschoolers, I can't imagine doing such a thing for my kids but if I had that option in the schools I'd consider it. Why parents don't become a thorn in board deliberations. . .but it's easy to criticise.

After all, AKM, Gryphen, et al., have helped the world realize that the Heath's nor the Palins represent who or what Alaskans are.

I know more indigenous villagers who get homesick in a day removed from their isolated and remote communities who are more accepting and worldly (certainly better read and cultered) than those Wasillabilly's. Even former villagers living in the Valley.

Good luck in November Texas. Wish us luck with Captain Zero Parnell also, too.

Interesting seen it before... when another party is in control they will also do things that will make people just shake their heads. To Laura's point...spend time talking to your children...teach them to think for themselves because there will always be ideologues.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It's more than that.

Because of their buying power, they can control textbook content.

States that do not specify content, like California or Florida, are likely to get the Texas version of any textbook they buy.

So students in states beyond Texas will be indoctrinated in the biases of Texas.

It will take a generation, but this is one way the GOP can hope to get back control of the U.S.

It's why funding for schools has been chocked for the last two decades, why teachers are constantly being attacked in the media, and why there is a push for privatization.

Tax money for schools it the last pot of money the private sector hasn't been able to get their hands on other than Social Security. (Hence the push to privatize both Social Security and schools; to get at the money.)

No Child Left Behind was also designed to drain away school money. Require testing. Lots of it. Where do these tests come from? Private companies. Who develops them, who "grades" them? Private companies.

What does testing prove? Not much other than that students can follow directions to bubble in a circle. How many professions require you to bubble in a circle and what do they pay? Thought so. So pretty much testing has nothing to do with preparing children for work in the real world. The more testing that is done, the less preparation I.E. learning. Not only is time spent testing, but with NCLB, time is now spent preparing for the test as in teaching to the test. I know. I'm a teacher. And I've been at schools were administrators have stated in meetings that if it isn't on the test, we don't waste class instructional time teaching it.

    Useless things like....geography.

You want to know why education is the way it is and why there is no reform? Because teachers are NOT in charge. They never have been. Education has always been controlled by politicians. Politicians at the state level and politicians in the form of Boards of Education. Even administrators are borderline politicians. Most administrators are not education experts. They're the P.E. coach that got a promotion for brown-nosing the superintendent because a principal makes more money.

The U.S. has more administrators and more support personnel (I.E. secretaries, clerks, etc.) than any school system in the world. They all get a salary. If you want to reform the budget, start there.

But reform needs to go much deeper. It needs to start with how schools are funded. Changes need to happen to the calendar year, the school day I.E. periods where subjects are compartmentalized, grade levels where a child is assigned a level based on age rather than ability and even the way we evaluate and grade progress. It all needs to change. And it won't as long as politicians are in charge.

It won't change as long as Arne Duncan is in charge either.

Wow! One of the most accurate and to-the-point comments I've ever heard about education!

I am also a teacher and it has always frustrated me to no end that the vast majority of people making policy decisions about education on the state and national levels have no expertise in education. Most of them have not been in a classroom since they were learning how to read and write themselves. They have no concept of what happens in a classroom and base many of their decisions on what their own education was like 4 or 5 decades ago, when they came home from school to find Mom wearing an apron and making dinner after being home all day.

The world has changed and so must education. The people leading that change must have a clear understanding of what teachers and students face when they walk in the school door every morning. And they must understand what the students will face when they leave school and enter the real and challenging world of this century.

  35. It's not so much a matter of dumbing down (although that too) as it is preparing a climate for fascism.

I love the theory of projection. That which motivates you, quite naturally you will expect it to motivate others. An honest person tends not to be highly suspicious. But a dishonest one will expect others to deceive and cheat them.

The latest propaganda coming out of the right is that Obama is trying to make this country into a socialist dictatorship. It might appear they are pulling that idea completely out of their asses, but I think it is coming instead from within their souls and subconscious minds. The corporate neocons are trying to move this country toward fascism. So they pin something similar on Obama.

So in a way, they are telling us their truth and their plans pretty openly. As for their followers, the neocons are just using their religious emotions as a means to achieve certain ends. The religiosity of the leaders is just a sham, a pretense. It's how they fool their followers into loyalty.

We certainly live in interesting times. In many ways, the awareness of the general public of what is really going on is increasing at a pleasing rate. On the other hand, the power grabs and corruption of the negative elite are increasing in intensity and boldness.
