Joe Miller lies about WHY he had security at public town hall meeting. Update!

On Miller's campaign website he describe the incident with Tony Hopfinger as follows:

Liberal Blogger “Loses It” at Town Hall Meeting

Obsession with Republican Nominee leads to physical assault, publicity stunt

Anchorage, Alaska. October 17, 2010 — Joe Miller released the following statement:

“While I’ve gotten used to the blog Alaska Dispatch’s assault on me and my family, I never thought that it would lead to a physical assault. It’s too bad that this blogger would take advantage of a “Town Hall” meeting to create a publicity stunt just two weeks before the election.”

The Miller campaign was required by the facility to provide security at the event. Even though Joe had spent nearly an hour freely answering questions from those in attendance, the blogger chased Miller to the exit after the event concluded in an attempt to create and then record a ‘confrontation’ with the candidate. While Miller attempted to calmly exit the facility, the blogger physically assaulted another individual and made threatening gestures and movements towards the candidate. At that point the security personnel had to take action and intervened and detained the irrational blogger, whose anger overcame him. It is also important to note that the security personnel did not know that the individual they detained was a blogger who was reporting on the campaign. To them, the blogger appeared irrational, angry and potentially violent.

So according to Joe Miller his contract with the school district REQUIRED that he have security staff on the premises.  Really?

Well let's just see what the Community Services Department Facilities Use Application says exactly.

The only portion that seems relevant to this claim in any way is the following:

3. The permit holder shall be responsible for the conduct and control of both patrons and participants, and must comply with all applicable state and federal laws, city ordinances, School District regulations, by-laws, and policies and permit conditions.

Okay so I made some phone calls, because other politicians have also used public school buildings and other municipal buildings for gatherings in the past, and asked what THEY had done to meet this requirement.

What I learned is that NO OTHER POLITICIAN IN THIS STATE has ever used a private security force to "control both patrons and participants."   According to the people I talked to they simply used volunteers and/or paid staff members to "control patrons and participants," even during the VERY volatile health care town halls that were held back in August of 2009.

Do you remember those? During that time the local 2nd amendment assholes were turning up with holstered weapons and standing outside of the Dena'ina Center with bullhorns and daring Senator Begich to come out and talk to them face to face.  And yet Mark did not feel the need to hire "Soldier of Fortune" magazine subscribers or "jack booted thugs"  to protect him from his constituents. And here is Lisa Murkowski's statement on Joe Miller's obvious paranoia.

"I find it alarming that Joe feels he needs to hire security forces to protect him from Alaskan voters and members of the press.”

So despite Joe Miller's claims, those security goons were there for one reason and one reason only, and that was to keep the journalists from cornering the candidate and making him answer the questions that he simply does not want to answer.

Essentially Joe Miller is so terrified of the press that he has to hide behind hired thugs, and THIS guy thinks he can represent REAL Alaskans?  Hah!

Update: Huffington Post as a video of Joe MIller talking to, you guessed it, Fox News about the incident and continuing to claim that the Middle School REQUIRED him to provide a security staff.

I do NOT have any information about whether or not Hopfinger followed him into the potty, but I am going to the debate tonight so perhaps he will answer that charge there.

I wonder if Miller's security guys were armed?

I'm not sure what the law in AK is, but in most states, I believe it's illegal to carry firearms on school property unless you are a member of law enforcement.

Since that section of the contract you quoted specifically states that they must comply with a whole host of laws, rules and regulations there, I would not be surprised if the security team (if they were armed) had not violated them.

For that matter, I have read before that Miller, himself carries (concealed) quite often. If he was carrying last night, he might well have been in violation of some law by having a firearm on public school property.

  2. Regarding your last sentence Gryphen - I read that Miller will NOT attend the senatorial debate tonight, that he cancelled. Just Lisa and McAdams will be there according to reports.
    Can you verify?

I was fortunate enough to visit Alaska a decade ago. Of course I loved every minute (despite the tylenol-sized mosquitos).

Although not a resident, it's clear that Alaskans are live-and-let-live, but don't have much tolerance for whiners & cowards.

You've got the most interesting race that will probably be decided way after every other state next month.

  7. "Miller, unsurprisingly, will not be attending tonight: Organizers said he never accepted their invitation and the Republican’s campaign said he has a longstanding scheduling conflict in another part of the state. Representatives from the campaigns of Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who is running as a write-in candidate, and Democrat Scott McAdams, confirmed they will attend the debate as planned."

Joe will probably not be at the debate tonight. I was referring to Tony answering about the bathroom issue.

Republican U.S. Senate nominee Joe Miller on Monday admitted he was disciplined for violating the Fairbanks North Star Borough's ethics policy in 2008 when he was a part-time borough lawyer.

The confession represents a reversal for Miller, who had vowed last week not to answer any questions about his past after questions were raised about his work history with the borough. He's refused to release his borough personnel files and news organizations are suing to seek their release. Miller's private security team handcuffed and detained a reporter Sunday who was attempting to ask Miller about his borough employment after an Anchorage town hall, with the Drop Zone security firm alleging that the reporter was hounding Miller and had shoved someone.

Miller, while continuing to refuse interview requests with the Daily News and other Alaska news media, went on CNN on Monday and conceded to anchor John King that he had been disciplined.

SO we're supposed to believe that a guy who is 5 months past due on filing disclosure paperwork is pouring over an agreement they made with the school district to make sure they have followed the agreement to the letter? Yeah okay Jo(K)e whatever you say...

As soon as I read, "The Miller campaign was required by the facility to provide security at the event." I knew it would only be a matter of (very little) time until somebody checked to see whether it was true or not. The Miller camp must be desperate, dumb, or both to tell such an obvious lie.

Time to toss another "aide" under the bus. There must be very few of them left.

I thought that I had read that Miller wasn't showing up at the debate because he had another campaign event that day.

Well, here's his "agenda" from his website.

I see nothing scheduled for the 18th.

Andrew Halcro has a post up concerning Joe Miller's lately filed financial disclosure form.

It is the title "Is Joe Miller scamming the system?"

The system talked about is the tax system. Joe might have been caught with his hand in the IRS cookie jar.

    Halcro sayz
"I think he is trying to disguise a big tax issue."

Has to do with possibly charging himself excessively high rent on the office he owns and uses for his law office. Which would save on taxes.

Oh Joe say it ain't so.

    http://www.andrewhalcro.com/what_readers_say_about_joe_miller_hiding_his_past

Halcro has a math error imho- "He lists his Law Office valued at $50-$100k, which pays him rent of $50-$100k per year. That is 100-200% rate of return. That can't be right!"

The rate of return calculates here to 50% to 200%, but still probably too high. Halcro has done some more research on what the rill dill is on Fairbanks values and rents.

Joe should go on MSNBC and explain this one.

Hey Joe- If you had filed the disclosure when you were required by law to file it; this whole checking it out process could have been done BEFORE the primary. Funny how that worked out.

I'm curious about two additional items of finance. Probably not much there- but you never know until you read the fine print.

I chuckled thinking that you'd not want to say PlopZone in that store.

Actually I was thinking DropZone described something similar to what
Kevin at 7:07 is talking about- but taking a dump instead.

And sure enough that is a business name. More than one business using DropZone for portable toilets!!!

  29. Given Miller claimed this reporter "pulled a publicity stunt" IMO Miller hired these guards with instructions to do what they did. Now Miller can go public having created a distraction by hiring these guards to essentially pick a fight. He's leaned from the Palin playbook to play the victim.

My money is on it was Miller who told these guards what to do to spin the bloggers are irrational, threatening and violent. That explains the "attacks on him".
Abusers who also lie andchose the "crazy/irrational" card to play people when their abused SO starts telling people of their abusive behavior. Miller chose to control that people won't believe he cheated, almost lost his job casting votes for himself.

In one of the early stories about the incident, Tony said that he had seen Jackboot Joe when he was in the restroom but did not feel it was appropriate to question him there. He said they exchanged cordial nods & went on about their business.

Now the lying bagger is saying Tony "stalked" him in the bathroom? OMG! Words don't do my thoughts justice - and are unprintable anyway. =)

Anon 5:56; thanks for the Alaska Dispatch article. Eye-opening. Obviously, Miller is lying about the reporter following him into the bathroom, and this independent witness confirms that.

So the next article ought to call out Miller on the lie about the bathroom.

C'mon Alaska journalists, keep exposing this liar and fraud for what he is.
