The Birth of Birtherism.

From Politico:

The original smear against Obama was that he was a crypto-Muslim, floated in 2004 by perennial Illinois political candidate and serial litigant Andy Martin. Other related versions of this theory alleged that Obama was educated in an Indonesian “madrassa” or steeped in Islamist ideology from a young age, and the theories began to spread virally after Obama appeared on the national stage – to the casual observer, from nowhere – with his early 2007 presidential campaign announcement.
Then, as Obama marched toward the presidency, a new suggestion emerged: That he was not eligible to serve. (See: Birther debate alive across U.S.)

That theory first emerged in the spring of 2008, as Clinton supporters circulated an anonymous email questioning Obama’s citizenship.

“Barack Obama’s mother was living in Kenya with his Arab-African father late in her pregnancy. She was not allowed to travel by plane then, so Barack Obama was born there and his mother then took him to Hawaii to register his birth,” asserted one chain email that surfaced on the urban legend site Snopes.com in April 2008.

Another early version of the theory, reported by the Chicago Tribune in June 2008, depended on a specious legal theory that was, for a time, the heart of the argument: that Obama was born in Hawaii but had a Kenyan father, and his mother was only 18 years old. Therefore, under existing immigration law, he was not eligible for automatic citizenship upon birth — a claim that depended on an understandable, but incorrect, reading of immigration law. Other theories suggested that Obama lost his U.S. citizenship when he moved to Indonesia or visited Pakistan in violation of a supposed State Department ban as a young man. (There was no such ban.)

I hate it that people keep comparing our extremely valid questions about Sarah Palin's clearly fake pregnancy, to this ridiculous attempt to invalidate the election of our President, by people who simply cannot face the fact that we now have an African American in the White House.

They are simply NOT comparable issues.

Of course perhaps the biggest difference between the two topics, besides the fact that Obama provided HIS birth certificate of course, is that the press is ALLOWED to report on the birther issue, but (until very recently) babygate has been considered verboten!

The real truth is Barack's mother was Sally Heath and his father was James Earl Jones.

Sally had an affair and hid the entire pregnancy from her family. She crossed the border one weekend to Canada to deliver him and then sold him into slavery.

A black man from Kenya bought him and then sold him to a white girl in Hawaii.

Aren't there ANY honest, concerned citizens in Wasilla who know the truth about this entire farce of a pregnancy, who would do the right thing and speak up? When is her contract with Faux ending? Will they dismantle her home studio, remove the cameras and access? It is absolutely disgusting to me that this joke of a candidate has been allowed to lie her way into the political discourse. No qualifications or common sense. She mist have rubbed someone the wrong way, as she usually does, so much that they are ready to expose the cheating, lying, grifting piss poor excuse for a mother?

    @5:56am:

I don't think the poster intended it to be funny, but merely wrote something that is as equally ridiculous as any explanation that ever came from a Palin's mouth.

They were just making a point; nothing wrong with that.

Now have another cup of coffee and lighten up. Have a great weekend, too.

The way I see it, if he wasn't eligible,
he wouldn't be president. Case closed.

I would have voted for him if he said

use the "secret Muslim" charge. Who

We ladies are in an uproar.

Governor Sarah Palin did not tell her parents, daughters, or friends she was pregnant but felt the need to prove she was with child to these two men. Think on that for a minute. A big ¨piece of fabric¨ had to be lifted up to show Sarah´s swollen baby belly. Why would she show it to these two men? What kind of relations did she have with them?

    We smell hanky-panky.

5:49: You know, there's a book written by a right winger that claims that...Barack Obama's father might be...Jimi Hendrix. Because...Duh, they're both black, Ann Dunham lived in Washington once, and they're both lefties. It HAS to be true...I mean, if you were a politician looking to be leader of the free world, wouldn't you prefer NOT to have the world know that you're the spawn of one of the most beloved musicians of all time? Makes sense...to people who think you can reduce the deficit by DECREASING the tax rate.

Speaking on Ann Dunham: Thanks for posting the link to that story about her in the New York Times, Gryphen. She was an amazing woman. Obama's whole family are. Really, Barack Obama is like every other president we've ever had: He's the spawn of amazing overachievers.

What annoys me about birtherism is that these people are spreading lies and rumors about a woman who has been dead almost twenty years. How disgusting. You KNOW that if she were alive, these racist numbnuts would never have the guts to say such trash about her. Rethuglicans are disgusting, vile jerks, but they're disgusting, vile jerks who would wither at the awesomeness of Ann Dunham.

Gee, I guess it's too bad Ann Dunham didn't fly to Texas to give a speech and have her water break there. It's too bad also, too that she didn't make the decision to take two planes back to her home state while leaking fluid.

Had that been the case, the story of Pres. Obama's birth would be completely verboten, right?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I know this is off topic, but I had no idea Gryphen lived in a lovely home, provided by the Alaska Democratic Party. This interesting post was just posted at the Cee of Pee.

This needs to be conveyed to any of the doubting Thomas's who claim to like Sarah, but can't get past her quitting.

Shannyn Moore lurks here as well as lurks the #Palin hashtag thread on Twitter.

That entire crew was dedicated to taking down Palin on behalf of the Alaska Democratic Party and the White House political office. Little Lord Fauntlerory wanted to make an example of her before he started taking a wrecking ball to the Republic.

Gryphen, for example, lived in a home in AK provided for him by two well heeled California Democrats. Stacy McCain and Dan Riehl did a ton of legwork and reporting into that swine.

The point was to undo Palin so no fingerprints would be seen. The Ethics charges were perfect. It was right out of the Alinsky playbook. How do we know this? Back in the day, David Bonior would go down and file an ethics charge against his rival, former Speaker Newt Gingrich, almost every day of the House Session.

Who was the Chief of Staff for David Bonior? Rahm Emanuel. From Chicago. He later became a powerful House Democrat and White House Chief of Staff. His go-to guy was Pete Rouse, a Democrat heavy hitter from Alaska.

They knew that Palin wasn't rich and had no friends in the deeply corrupt Alaska Republican Party. So they tried to bankrupt her through cutouts. Dems like Moore will try to deny this, of course, but that's what happened. Palin found a way to dodge their bullet, but she paid a price,
she had to hand Alaska back to the Oil Profiteers and the two corrupt political parties that rape the public when they can (both parties are in the pocket of Big Oil, you'll never get Shannyn to admit this. The only difference between AK Republicans and AK Dems is that the Dems take their payoffs in Fifties instead of Hundreds).

They couldn't destroy Palin because she never took payoffs from the Oils. So Moore and her two-bit swine friends had to make sh*t up about Palin and did their level best to destroy a great administration and a woman who did her best to serve the people of her state, all so Chicago Jesus could take his revenge. Shannyn Moore is just as guilty as any one of those other rotten swine for trying to bankrupt Palin, trying to force her from power, and handing the state back to the Corrupt Bastards Club that Palin fought.

Moore is a swine. History will judge her and her Democratic confederates in a savage light.

Looks like the idiots at the Cee are blaming Gryphen and Shannon for all of the quitter's problems. S

6:27, you are absolutely wrong. A certificate of live birth is simply the title Hawaii uses on their birth certificate, which is legal, state-issued proof of citizenship and date of birth. To determine if it is valid to use for a particular purpose, you have to look at what is required. For example, here's how Hawaii's birth certificate stacks up against the State Department's passport requirements, which are more strict than state driver's license requirements (look it up, and compare it with the image of the President's birth certificate on factcheck.org):

Yes Full name of the applicant
    Yes Date of birth
    Yes Place of birth
Yes Raised, embossed, impressed or multicolored seal of issuing authority
    Yes Registrar’s signature
Yes The date the certificate was filed with the registrar’s office (must be within one year)
    Yes Full name of father
    Yes Full name of mother

Perhaps you are talking about the "certificate of live birth" that Chump provided for his first "birth certificate," which was his hospital keepsake. That document (coincidentally titled the same), is NOT a valid birth certificate.

The most laughable part of this whole conspiracy is that KENYA was not even a country when President Obama was born. The only presidential candidate in decades born out of the country was John McCain who was born of american parents in Panama.

  26. Anonymous7:46 AM

Ok, so now they think he might have been born in Hawaii but is still ineligible because of his mother's age? Jeez, do they even read the laws of this land before they come up with their BS theories?

He would still be an American citizen even if his mother was 12 when he was born in Hawaii. Isn't that what all these illegals are accused of doing according to the neo-cons? Aren't they giving birth on American soil thereby conferring citizenship by virtue of location at the time of birth?

Again Obama birthers, where is the proof? Where are the travel records that show his mother was out of the country at the time of his birth and later returned with an infant? His mother would have had to have a passport containing both their names and with a picture of herself holding her infant. This is how it worked at that time.

Obama showed you his, now you show us yours.

You're an idiot. Of course it's a legal document. It's what anyone born in Hawaii (like my son) get when they request an official copy of their birth certificate for legal reasons. Many other states supply the same document.

It has been relatively only recently in our modern media history that we've had women political candidates. The media has been uncertain how to "handle" these candidates. For example, Geraldine Ferraro was one of the first popular female political figures that the media had to focus on. They called her all sorts of names, feminazi, questioned whether she was a good wife/mother, etc. And look at how they treated Hiliary Clinton. "They" screech about voice tone, wardrobe choices, ability to play with the "boys", but to talk about anything to do with preganancy and childbirth has traditionally been way outside the limits of propriety and is "icky" to most men - and the media is controlled by men.

So to discuss the possibility of Sarah Palin endangering a special needs child's birth or faking a pregnancy especially of a special needs child was/is completely out of thier comfort zone. Hell, most of our so-called journalists can't even hold a decent interview - much less ask a tough question and poke for a true answer on a topic as verboten as this one is.

Which is why it is SO much easier to question a birth certificate of a man than to question the way a woman potentially birthed (or not) her child.

But since this is such a compelling and unique story that just won't quiet down, the media is going to have to get over their squeamishness and expose the filth. After all, dirt sells.

These have been used as legal documents (because of the certification seal) and have been used as proof of citizenship, age etc. to receive our passports and other legal status documents in the US, UK and Canada.

It's funny that no one questioned Nixon's place of birth because he was born in California (as was I) and they only issue "certificate of live birth" forms as does Hawaii (http://www.birth-certificates.net/california.htm). But we were reassured in last night's news by our trusty Anchorage Police spokesperson that he committed NO crimes while he was a cop. He has an impeccable service record. One of Anchorage's "finest." Also, too, he passed a background check when they hired him.
Now, that's just absurd; I don't even know why they said that. First of all, to be illegally in this country doesn't mean that one is automatically criminally bent.

It threatened everything they had ever been taught in church, school, business, personal life, at little league balls games, etc..etc...etc..

The birther follies will never cease. No matter the birth certificates, legal documentation, etc. that is provided to prove Obama's citizenship, they will all be disputed and pronounced bogus and/or phony. It is an effective tool to smear, attack and delegitimize the president.

With Trump having now jumped on the bandwagon, there is a new birther star in town, (Taitz faded) and incentives are being thrown at him, (e.g., money/media exposure)from somewhere--for one, Faux has hooked up with him. The game is to keep the birther stink pot boiling to ensure that "Smear Obama Inc." stays in business particulary for 2012. Trump is "brought to us" by Smear Obama Inc., and he is "out there" because one of the CEO's at SO, Inc. wants him "out there," ergo his current "status" (which is "ridiculous candidate of the year"). He is as idiotic as Taitz, both of them are huge jokes, almost as big a joke as the entire birther conspiracy itself.

Since Palin is also part of Smear Obama, Inc., they will cover up for her, the pregnancy scam gets a pass, but the birtherism bull is permitted to permeate and spread all over.

There is no such thing as a "long form" birth certificate, at least not in my state or in Hawaii.

When my kids were born in Illinois in 1990 and 1992, the Registar's office at the hospital kept sending up a woman to my room to have my hubby and I sign some sort of form related to their birth certificates. Since Hubby and I didn't agree on name for baby #2, this woman came to my room no less than four times over three days.

After she told us that if we didn't name the baby within 72 hours of birth, she'd have to send in the form with the baby's name left blank and we would then have to go to court to get her named legally.

Needless to say, we agreed on a name pretty quickly after that as the deadline was fast approaching.

This form had our names, the baby's name and various other info. It was signed by my OB. Hubby and I both signed that form and we have never, ever seen it since. It was a form only available to the County's Vital Statistics Dept.

A few weeks after the birth of my first child, a birth certificate that looks EXACTLY like the President's came in the mail from Cook County.

I have over the years asked about that form that we signed in the hospital and I have been told that what they gave me is what meets the legal standard as a birth certificate and that other form is their original record available only to the county.

Obama does NOT have access to the form the county (via the hospital) used to register his birth with the state. He couldn't show it if he wanted to. It's not his to show.

As far as the law of Hawaii is concerned and evidently, the State Department that issued Obama's passport is concerned, the short form he was given by the state satisfies the legal requirements.

Time to put this birther crap to bed. It's simply another not so subtle stab at racism. It's beneath the dignity of this country to even be discussing this and it must make Osama Bin Laden very, very happy that he didn't even need to lift a finger to divide Americans.

The crazy goes deeper than that. I hope the professor has been paying attention, because he should be getting all sorts of great material for his "circle of silence". There are now all sorts of "reporters" reporting on the story by talking to each other or reading what other "sources" say. As far as you can tell not one of those supposed reporters has even so much as asked Palin about the story or reported her response if they did. If they're afraid to even ask her about it they certainly don't have what it takes to ask for some verification.

Really true. We can give as much credit to the wackadoodles who have NO BASIS for their conspiratorial claims and yet to mention that NO WOMAN WHO EVER GAVE BIRTH would EVER risk the life of her child by getting on a plane, even for a 15 minute ride, with leaking waters. NO DOCTOR would EVER advise a patient that its okay to fly with leaking water WHATSOEVER because there is NO telling just when active labor will kick in and when it does kick in, a multiparous woman is likely to give birth very quickly. If any of you think the Palin reads will be informative and entertaining I suggest you would find Brock's book much more captivating as it captures conversations, tactics, dinner behaviors, admissions by righties to their willingness to lie, cheat & steal to erroneously destroy progressives.

Brock embraced that right wing attack machine & led it for some years before coming to his senses.

The book clearly illustrates the viciousness, need to immediately say whatever is necessary to deflect and diminish criticism of themselves, including lies & calling innocent people liars, and that those tactics are the very foundation of the Rethug idiots - and has been since the Reagan years. We must not allow the rigt wing to complete their agenda! We must save them from themselves as they are too dumb to see they are plotting their own demise by following the tenets of the Rethugs big money dictators.

It is just that $P acts out those assigned behaviors to the max, & is given the unrestrained right wing media in which to do so, including her millions from Murderoch for her books printed in his publishing house.

We must arm ourselves with real information to fight off this onslaught of takeover. Look at Michigan, Tennessee & of course Wisconsin. Our country is being marginalized, state by state by a dictatorship manned, bankrolled & promoted by right wing nuts who do not know they are as dispensable & replaceable as yesterday's dirty socks.

  53. It looks like Gryph is now under attack from the Paylin Gang. This is the Paylin methodology, ignore the message, and go after the messenger with a vengeance.

There is little doubt that when the final chapter is written on Sarah Paylin and her sordid attempt to become America's first dictator (St. Sarah), it will paint a picture of the lowest point in this country's history since the Civil War.

That's the sad part in all of this for us as citizens of this country. Paylin not only doesn't add anything to the mix, she detracts from it - and that, my friends, will be to the detriment of us all.

I was born in a military hospital on a military installation. The town in which I was born had a major tornado wipe most of the town out, along with it the vital records division that held my (and others) birth certificates during that time. The only thing I have is the copy of what the hospital gave my parents and that is it, except for the 'official' from my state, which looks just like our president's except with a different state seal. I guess I'm not qualified to be president. Sadly, the likelihood that anyone would ask is very low since I'm as white as white can get. This is about him being black and having a different kind of name. It is based on fear and racism. Period. Our interest in Palin's "story" isn't based on conspiracy, race or bigotry but rather on the oddities of her own account and that the account changes so often and that it just doesn't make any sense that a woman who has been pregnant 6 other times would make such a reckless choice. That is the basis for the concern. That this woman would think for even a moment that it was okay to fly for nearly 12 hours with broken membranes. That is reckless, crazy and quite frankly criminal to put her child's life in that sort of danger. It shows how careless and impulsive she is. And THAT is the rub. Because the action does not segue with her own account of who she claims she is, which is a responsible adult woman who is a momma grizzy and who was an executive of a state. We already know that she was an abysmal administrator and a liar and cheat. It only helps to increase the likelihood that she made the whole thing up and faked a pregnancy because THAT scenario segues more closely to what we already know of her; that she is a vain, secretive, duplicitous and calculating person who is driven by a deep narcissism and that drive makes her say and do terribly impulsive things. Think "sarah baracuda" on the basketball court. THAT is the real Sarah and THAT is the person that NEVER belongs anywhere near the most powerful job in the world.

I have an AK birth certificate. My kids have AK birth certificates, which look different and are processed different because one of them was born in Anchorage, as opposed to the rest of the state. Because the Municipality of Anchorage has its own vital records division for births/deaths/marriages in the city. Everybody else is Juneau and State of Alaska.
    They're all "real."

One parent has NO United States birth certificate and never will. Because if you were born out on the tundra 80 years ago, your birth wasn't formally documented by anyone. Can't be president I guess.

And hey, I guess it'll be a long time before there's a Native American president. Because Natives weren't legally "Citizens" until after 1924. Alaska's indigenous people later than that.

And hey, guess what else? As far as I'm concerned (along with about 400,000 of my restless friends), ALL Americans are nothing more than squatters. NONE of you are in YOUR homeland. NONE of your forefathers properly appealed to the existing sovereign government at the time of your arrival in this country.
Kenya, Sweden, Ireland - what's the difference. You're ALL alien immigrants. This is not YOUR country. It's OUR country.

You all left your countries behind and moved here. Some of you are actually still living on property that your great-grandfather quite literally stole from an Indian family. Declared Eminent Domain and removed them.
The great Oklahoma Land Grab? Legitimized theft.

This crap is out of control.
What do Sarah Palin and President Obama have in common? Nothing.
Questions about Obama's birth and eligibility to be president are not in any way comparable to questions about whether or not Sarah Palin was pregnant with her 5th child.
Two very very different issues, different circumstances, and in no way related. I am sooo over it. The ugly nasty business about Obama was indulged and properly addressed during election season and even into his administration.

Time for it to stop, Christians. That's enough. Knock it off. Don't like a black president? Fine. Deal with it appropriately. Request that your congressman create legislation to mandate that a president must be Caucasian of European heritage. Go ahead. I don't care. Make sure you check every politician's ethnicity before you vote. Vote only for White people. I don't care.
Just stop with the stupid stuff.

Here's what it boils down to. There are two categories of American citizens: "natural born" and "naturalized".
Arnold Schwarzenegger (California governor) and John McCain (Arizona senator) are both American citizens, but neither was born in the United States. McCain can be president.
    Why?
Because McCain meets the definition of "natural born" even though his mother physically gave birth to him on foreign soil; he's a United States citizen and he's been a resident for at least 14 years. It's really simple and has nothing to do with geography. One of his parents was formally an American citizen at the time of his birth. The end.
McCain could have opted for Panamanian citizenship on his 18th birthday.
There are quite literally thousands of American citizens who were born on foreign soil, for many different reasons. If they had an American citizen parent at the time of their birth, they are "natural born" Americans.
Period. The end. It's just that simple.

Back in the day, we used to have dual citizenship agreements with all kinds of countries, including Canada. We don't anymore.
Each 'presumed' American has the right to declare foreign citizenship in the country of their birth, when they reach the age of 18. But they have to relinquish American citizenship.

Even if Obama was born in Kenya (which he wasn't - the man was born in Hawa'ii), his mother was an American. He's never had Kenyan citizenship; neither did his mother.
And even if had, he would STILL qualify to hold presidential office.
    Why?
Because he's a United States citizen who has resided within the United States for at least 14 years.

Here's the deal on this whole thing. A bunch of illiterate ignorant people are running around screaming about this, without actually READING the actual charter document.

    Article. II.
    Section. 1.
"No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States."

Please. Put it in proper perspective and historical context. Who the heck had been BORN in The New World, in the 1700s?

Don't consider the "birther BS" a taint on President Obama, it is not...it is stain wholly owned by those that repeat it. Whether because of ignornance, racism, nativism, et al. Doesn't matter, they are the boneheads, let them be responsible for, and owning of their ignorance.

Corporate MSM is unreliable and should be viewed with a critical eye, and should not be a singular source of information.

I just read a rather brilliant comment over on Amazon on a "Birther Nonsense" thread.

The reason Obama will not stamp out the birther rumors are: 1. He has already satisfied the requirements of being a citizen. 2. He has better thing to do with his time and energy. 3. He knows the "but he is really a Kenyan" makes the fringe Republicans look CRAZY. So it's all good.

Anonymous said...For what it's worth, a certificate of live birth isn't a legal document. It won't work in many cases as an acceptable form of ID. Not that I believe all this birtherism crap, on both sides.
    6:27 AM

I am ot saying you are incorrect but whatever each state says is the legally recognized documentation of the birth, regardless of what it is called, is the legally accepted documentation of the birth in every state of the union and the US as a whole.
Its the same document you have to show to get a Visa. And the Visa is a legally recognized document around the world.

Pretty heavy-duty BS you're throwing there! Look at the copy of your official birth certificate from whatever state you live in. (You were born, right?) NOWHERE does is list "Religion"!

This is absolutely the weakest 'bot "argument" of all!

These birther fuckers are constantly grasping at straws. When one idea gets shot down, they come up with something else. Queen Birther Oily Teatz even tried to trot out two - count 'em two - forged birth certificates that were so laughably bad you wonder how anybody could be stupid enough to try and pass them off as genuine. Blind third graders could have done a better job forging the birth certificates.

I've said it before, if Jesus Christ produced a stone tablet birth certificate chiseled by the hand of God, backed up by the 12 disciples and choir of 1000 angels all testifying to the truth of Obama's citizenship, AND Jesus had a 35mm Technicolor/Panavision color film of a full crotch shot close up of Obama's birth that was filmed and directed by Jesus himself, the birthers would STILL deny that Obama was a citizen.

This has not a damn thing to do with the validity or veracity of any document that could ever be produced. The only thing this has to do with is the color of the president's skin. These fuckers are naught but racists. They will NEVER accept a black president. They will go to any length to disprove that he was legitimately elected. They will believe ANYTHING, entertain any fantasy, any conspiracy theory, no matter how improbable or impossible if it supports their preconceived batshit crazy political narrative.

This is why the teabaggers will never amount to anything; because of their fervent waving of the racist banner. THAT ship sailed about 45 years ago and these assholes still haven't figured it out.

How the hell does any sentient being think that you can found a 21st century political movement on the twin pillars of Racism and Ignorance?

The birthers come up with one ridiculous argument after another, each of which is easily debunked. For example, the one that claims Ann Dunham Obama Sotero was underage is easily debunked by the fact that she was born on Sunday, November 29, 1942, while her son was born on Friday, August 4, 1961.
That means she was 18, but close to her 19th birthday when she gave birth to the president. Then, as someone else pointed out, Kenya was not the country it is today. Not to mention that her supportive parents were in the picture as they were through the years. No way would she have gone to Kenya and taken the risks to her child that Sarah Palin did, if there is any truth to her story about leaking water on a plane.

I do remember Hilary Clinton's shameful behavior during the Democratic nomination process. She started this out of desperation because she was losing. And she was losing because of her own missteps. But I understand that both she and McCain tried to find information supporting the contention that Obama was not born in America, but found nothing to support that contention. However, trying to convince people whose fixed and rigid world has been turned upside down by his election is an exercise in futility.
