The FBI plans to contact the actor Jude Law following claims that his mobile phone was hacked during a visit to the US, officials have told the BBC.
It is alleged that a 2003 story by the News of the World newspaper was based on information from Law's voicemail.
If the accusation were true, Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation could face charges in the US.
An article in the News of the World published on published on 7 September 2003 gave a detailed account of the actor's communications with his assistant.
Law's phone would have been using an American mobile network if used in the US, which could open the door to charges under US federal law, says the BBC's Steve Kingstone in New York.
Every time I see a story about the investigation moving to US soil it just makes me that much more convinced that the noose is tightening around the flabby neck of Fox News. And it never fails to put a HUGE smile on my face at the thought.
And by the way the irony that the most damaging evidence against News Corp might come from the British actors that they harassed the most, like Hugh Grant and Jude Law, is not lost on me either.
Wait and see how many repub. politicians jump up to "help" Murdoch. After all, his media is their biggest cheerleader. Cheney insisted that every TV in the WH be tuned to Fox News, making sure the talking points that he sent over were being followed. Fox is just the propaganda arm of the G-No-P.

ReplyDeleteI agree that it certainly does make for some smiles watching this story unfold.. the bigger they are the harder they fall., Perhaps the British Parliament will lead by example, inspiring a awakening of what passes for justice on this side of the pond.
One must have hope or ya can't cope.

We can hope. It would be great if Fox "News" were to be distracted during the next election.
ReplyDeleteIn Palin Land, hacking is only hacking when a college student guesses your email password and is thrown in jail when you press charges.
ReplyDeleteIn Palin Land, your boss, Rupert Murdock, can hack into a dead girl's phone messages, bribe police and have a 'brain room' at Fox News for espionage, but that ISN'T a problem for Palin.
In Palin Land, a young man with limited cognitive ability can be charged, even when the FBI said he isn't a threat, so that Palin can claim victim status.
In Palin Land, putting rifle sites on Congressional Districts isn't wrong, even when one of them is shot in the head by a deranged killer. Once again, she claims she is the victim with her blood libel statements.
In Palin Land, when the word 'retarded' is used to describe a meeting, Palin is all over it.
In Palin Land, when El Rushbo uses 'retarded' to describe people, there is silence.
7:40 am, here's another one:
ReplyDeleteIn Palin Land, when Governor Sarah Palin is found guilty of abusing her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110 (a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act, the Quitter responds with, "The truth was revealed there in that report that showed there was no unlawful or unethical activity on my part."
i think it's unfortunate that there has been so little public sympathy for celebrities getting their phones hacked, garbage searched through, being stalked day and night... why should that have to come with celebrity? some celebs court it to improve their careers, but it usually gets out of hand and they become prisoners in their homes. others are just plain stalked. the phone hacking goes waaaaay too far, no matter who you are. i suppose some people feel they are privy to any and all info accessible about celeb private lives. to those people i would suggest getting a private life of their own and minding their own business.
ReplyDeleteThis whole story is very reminiscent of Watergate. I remember how in the beginning it unraveled very slowly. Nixon's secretary Rosemary Woods "accidentally" erasing 18 1/2 minutes of tape from her Dictaphone. A man name Butterfield revealing Nixon's White House taped conversations.
ReplyDeleteMurdoch's tsunami is coming.
Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.
(mixing metaphors to make my point.)
You know Jude Law is going to enjoy telling the Feds everything he knows about it. Payback is a bitch.

Law's case is but the camel's nose under the tent. How much do you want to bet that they find evidence that Murdoch and his thugs have committed MANY more crimes here?
ReplyDeleteAdd that to the long list of potential violations of the FCPA (Foreign Corrupt Practices Act) and the Murdochs are unlikely to emerge from this without multiple criminal charges and at least a conviction or two.
My hope is that there is enough criminal taint in News Corpse that FauxNews is among the wreckage when all is said and done. Given that Roger "Rat Fucker" Ailes is in charge of FauxNews, I think that it is a safe bet that dodgy practices were employed there, too.
It's been good to be a liberal this past week. I suspect that there will be even more good times coming on this front for quite awhile.
Gasman, I always enjoy your posts! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI have a dream...Fox news goes off the air - Billo, Hannity, Greta, et al, lose their jobs/money and are begging the teabaggers for unemployment insurance extensions!
Gasman always has the best comments on every issue.
ReplyDeleteI have a strange hunch that they're already being investiaged internally by the FBI, and Ailes will probably be called before a grand jury by the time it's broken open. The FCC takes these crimes very seriously.
The celbrities are just the tip of a very large incberg involving our politicians. It also wouldn't surprise me if some religious organizations aren't also implicated. Power and Greed lead people to pursue any story, at any cost, unfortuanately human lives are just collateral damage to them.
Gasman -- Ah, the audacity of hope!
