Some chilling words from Bill Maher.

I tend not to agree that Palin has a chance to become President, and I am always taken aback by the fact that there are many well educated people who believe it is not an impossibility.

I will say that if there was a devastating terrorist attack, and Obama was perceived to have not reacted adequately, that all bets are off as to how terrified and stupid the American people would suddenly become in response.

In THAT climate even an idiot like Sarah Palin, who did nothing but talk about God and American exceptional-ism, might actually have a shot.

However I have great confidence that Obama WOULD react appropriately, so this scenario is unlikely to present itself.

Anybody of a different opinion?

You mean, like, maybe a terrorist attack occurs, and Obama, say, is reading to a bunch of schoolchildren and then continues to do so while the attack occurs even though he has been notified?

And then, after the dust settles, Obama decides to retaliate against somebody other than who actually attacked us?

Yeah, that would be a problem. The American people would never reelect somebody like that.

Consider this, Bill Mayer is baiting Palin to get in the race only to have her hoisted by her own petard. She'd be the Rosie Ruiz* of the 2012 campaign.

*In 1980 she crossed the finish line before all other women runners in the 84th Boston Marathon and was initially credited as the first place female competitor, but was later stripped of her title when it was found that she had not run the entire course.

I also think no one needs to worry that President Obama wouldn't act appropriately in any crisis situation. Look how Bush acted and the right wing fools think he acted just fine. However, I am positive that if any kind of attack happened, the right would spin it and twist it to try to make him look bad no matter how the President responded. I also have no doubt, given McConnell's admission that the only thing Republicans care to accomplish is to make Obama a one term president, that they would find a way to provoke or sponsor an attack on the US just to bring Obama down. So much of what the right has been doing would have been considered sedition or treason in the past. It appears to be ok to commit treason if they call themselves Christians and as long as we have a black president. I don't think they are above colluding with nefarious entities to attack our country.

This is an interesting hypothetical question. I believe there is so much dirt on the half term governor the Republicans themselves would use it on her to stop her nomination. She seems to have no support in the Republican establishmen and even her own party understands her mental instability and will stop her. Just my opinion.

OK, I make it a habit to avoid Bill Maher because I find him annoying and not an honest broker when it comes to political stuff, though he is of course entitled to his own opinion.

This woman could not endure the rigors of a campaign, I don't care what scenario might adversely affect Obama's chances. This woman has screwed up every opportunity thrown her way. She has little substance, poor judgement, lack of self-control, and we all know she has more skeletons in her closet than anyone can count. While some press might court her, others would absolutely demolish her. And she would sabotage herself, on that we can count!

She can run, she can try - but the woman can't win. It would be good news for Obama if the GOP was reckless enough, yet again, to try and run her. It wouldn't be a pretty sight, however - just weeks to months into any campaign she might attempt to launch. She probably wouldn't even last SIX months. Then what would they do?

Bring it on, sister! We are ready for you this time.

OT but in keeping with the latest Murdoch (the "Dirty Digger" - I like that!) news, I have been reading the Guardian, especially. This article in the Telegraph really has the "goods" on just how far into British govt Murdoch's influence went. Read that and then think about what's going on here and you will feel really sick.

  14. I'll bite. The point is that if you win one of the two party's nominations, anything is possible. So the real question is whether Palin could win the Republican nomination. There I am skeptical, but she can raise money and draw a crowd. She has proven that she can hide her ignorance behind a phalanx of friendly interviewers and Facebook posts and that no one will call her out on the specifics and details. None of the current Republican candidates is all that solid. All she has to do is best a weak field. If no one has the courage to take her on in the Republican debates she could become the alternative to Romney and it may be that that is what the Republicans want - anybody but Mitt. If she gets that far it is a crapshoot. Rove's management of W's first campaign proves you can get a numbskull elected. Why would anyone doubt it could be replicated.

The big question is one Gryphen can answer better than anyone. Is there a skeleton in the closet that will jump out at the most inopportune moment to blow up Palin's chances? Does the Romney campaign already have this cued up and ready to go? If so, I expect she will not even run. If she runs it must mean she thinks she can survive any disclosures - of course it is possible she has overestimated her ability to do that. Still the bottom line is the same, if she runs, she could win. Stranger (though probably not scarier) things have happened.

I have to admit that I agree with Bill Maher. Although it is highly unlikely, ANYTHING can happen. Republican primary voters dont' vote on facts, they vote based on who talks the loudest, and emotion. If Sarah can tap into that Republican emotion and win the nomination, then Houston, we have a problem.

That is why we need the iceburg very soon because if the Palin express picks up steam, we are in serious trouble.

We all need to be very concerned.

Palin will not become President because the powers that control the mechanisms of government, capital, commerce, industry and all other forms of big money, simply will not allow such a simpleton to take the reigns of power.

Obama is their man, as he has done many things that these people approve of, and is much more center-right than he seemed when he was campaigning. His advisors are all big-business people, he has not ended the occupations in the Middle East, and continued the endless expenditures for "defense."

He has propagated the Bush policies in many areas, including civil liberties curtailment, Patriot Act, detention of prisoners without trial, continuing the tax cuts for the wealthy for two more years, and on and on. He is doing what they want to be done, and he will be re-elected on that basis alone. Palin has no chance, and if she even gets anywhere close, they will see to it that she goes down hard.

If there were a serious attack one or both parties would turn to active or retired military.

Sarah can win if people like Murdoch and the Kochs want to buy and cheat her in. That is what frightens me buecasue the Republicans have sold our their party and they cheat even when they don't need to (see Nixon and Watergate).

Bill Kristol referred to both Duhbya and St. Sarah of the Lesser Cleavelage as tabula rasa. They were and are mental blank slates, empty headed boobs. Also, too they are gullible and easily lead by those who play on their vanity.

Sarah Palin might not win election to the presidency, but she could reap a Razzie Award for her documentary "The Undefeated," which opens in select movie theaters on Friday.

"She's the political equivalent of what the Razzies are all about and she's hysterically funny if you don't stop and think, 'Oh, my God, she could've been vice president!'" gasps Razzie president and founder John Wilson. "Sarah Palin exhibits ineptitude and an indefensible grasping after other people's ideas, calling them her own. Just like Hollywood filmmakers who can't make an original movie. She wants you to put on rose-colored glasses instead of 3-D glasses, but there is still a surcharge you should not pay."

In my most cynical moments, I consider the fact that the Republicans a) hate this country enough to foist Sarah Palin on it (they nominated her for VP didn't they?) and b) they swept the state elections in 2010, not just the national elections. There are many, many Republicans in positions to tamper with the votes in states throughout this country.

OT, sorry Grypen but this is important.......may I suggest that everyone send this to their Republican congressmen/women and strongly urge them to vote yes on this cost saving bill, it was just introduced today. Please do so, it's one small way we can help with this BS between both parties.

Rupert Murdoch "made" money using our tax dollars and offshore tax evasion.

Please pass this around, if this bill was passed it would contribute 1 trillion of the 4 trillion the congress needs to stop the bleeding.

    http://levin.senate.gov/newsroom/press/release/levin-unveils-stop-tax-haven-abuse-act/?section=alltypes

"It is long past time to take effective action to stop offshore tax dodging.” said Doggett, senior member of the House Ways and Means and Budget Committees. “Revenue lost to these tax avoidance schemes contributes to the soaring budget deficit and increases the burden on small businesses, families, and others who play by the rules.”

    ...................................................

here is an article about Murdoch and his nonexistent taxes, this should bother everyday honest tax paying Republicans and help open their eyes to what big corporation get away with, they are a big part of the problem!.

    http://blogs.reuters.com/mediafile/2011/07/12/it-pays-to-be-murdoch-just-ask-the-u-s-government/

"Indeed, when it comes to taxes, instead of rendering unto Caesar, Murdoch has Caesar rendering unto him.

Over the past four years Murdoch’s U.S.-based News Corp. has made money on income taxes. Having earned $10.4 billion in profits, News Corp. would have been expected to pay $3.6 billion at the 35 percent corporate tax rate. Instead, it actually collected $4.8 billion in income tax refunds, all or nearly all from the U.S. government (see chart)."

What gives me hope about Palin is that she is garnering less attention on tour (look at the book signing lack of numbers) and even less media attention for her supposed intellectual policy tweets and posts (look at the SILENCE regarding her latest attack on Obama and the GOP in Congress.) When her own people ignore her, she will have to do a striptease to get noticed. And instead of an attractive, professional magazine cover, she dresses like she's going to wash windows afterward...this was supposed to show gravitas of some sort? Sure there are some dumb cousin humpers - WAY too many - who'd vote for her, but the fact remains that the majority of the people in her own party would not support her. There are MANY people within the ranks of the GOP movers and shakers that would publicly support Obama before they would allow Palin or Bachmann to become president. They know it would sound the death knell of the GOP.

There are plenty within the GOP that will privately admit that W was a feckless moron and that he single handedly wrecked the economy. When W screwed the economy, he screwed business too. That and that whole war thing didn't really work out so well either.

    To Anonymous @1:46:

I listed only some of the things he has failed to do, which were in his power to accomplish. I did not say I would not vote for him, and in fact stated these reasons as why he will be elected again. However, just because he passed a health insurance reform bill (without the public option we all need, and not even attempting the real reform of single-payer) that provides millions of additional consumers to the industry, and has removed "don't ask don't tell" from the military, he has forsaken many, many progressive ideals that we counted on him to champion. That cannot be denied. He is more conservative than Dwight Eisenhower.

He continues with these debilitating overseas occupations, for no apparent reason. Continuing tax breaks for millionaires really devastated my faith in him, and the rest of the country financially. He is now even intimating he will be looking at reducing social security or Medicare benefits.

Please, give me a break about his accomplishments. Have some objectivity, and don't just knee-jerk react. Yes, he inherited a mess, and I applaud him for attempting to rectify some of it. But let's not be blinded by our own hopes and desires about him; he is no progressive, and Big Business will ensure that he is elected again because he serves their interests.

And I will reluctantly vote for him in the face of idiocy such as Palin and Bachmann and the rest of those clowns.

I donated to the Obama campaign and voted for him
I am from Wasilla Alaska the people that supported Mr Obama for president here were persecuted by our fellow citizens run down on road ways and had our vehicles vandalized by Palin supporters here. It was like the civil rights movement. When we tried to talk rationally with our fellow citizens they refused to hear our warnings about Ms Palin. And now allot of them admit we were right about her and very few have any Admiration for her anymore.
But after all is said and done many Obama supports are feeling let down and all americans have the RIGHT to call in to question any Presidents decisions no matter their political affiliation.
I primarily support the Democratic Party
    And there values.
The Democratic Party were the creators of Social Security and the Medicare programs and to support cutting them after the hard fight they gave to achieve them is a betrayal to the party.
Mr. Obama Goes to great existents to avoid confrontation to the demise of democratic values, cowering, WHY?
He made promises of change and it seems is alienating the very mantra of his campaign.
I don't think people mean to bash him we just have a desire for him to be more vocal and assertive to prove his case to preserve the democratic values we voted for.
They beat POTUS down and we want him to stand up for himself and us that supported him for president.

He's polling rough numbers in multiple states that went blue in '08. Fl, NC, VA, PA, IN, OH are all trending red now. And he doesn't have one state to spare, let alone a handful. The Right will coalesce en masse behind any nom - even the vomititious screechy wretch - in order to defeat "dat niggah what stole duh White House from decent, xtian, common sense conservative, non-gay, non-jewish, white Amerika, also, too."

This is going to be an epic battle that I'm afraid we're going to lose without massive, unyielding grass roots support - financial and volunteer level - for President Obama's re-election. The GOP will pull out all the stops on this one to bring him down.

I will eagerly support our president no matter who runs against him but I freely admit to disappointment in his apparent inability to punch back against festering lesions like Mitch "Yertle" McConnell and crybaby tipplers like John "Wiener" Boner.

If I hear that dickhead Boner whine one more time about not raising taxes on "the job creators" without ever hearing Obama or any Dem challenge the lie that overtaxation is keeping multi-millionaires from creating jobs I'm going to spit. I think you’re not giving President Obama enough credit for canniness and shrewdness. I think reasonable people agree he’s an ace politician, with an off-the-charts intellect. From a political perspective, POTUS does not consider the next move and act on that; he considers future counter- and counter-counter moves and acts accordingly. How would it benefit the country if he were to capitulate to the demands of his base? If you think the GOP has its heels dug in now, how would they react if Obama were also unyielding? The political climate would be far worse (hard as that is to imagine) and Obama would most likely have little chance for re-election. I’m praying for Obama’s re-election; he’ll out-maneuver the GOP to get the DREAM act passed and DOMA repealed.

Curiously, the media seems to have overlooked Obama’s call for a national infrastructure bank at yesterday’s press conference. This mystifies me, since it seems most everyone agrees that China is eating our lunch in terms of infrastructure and also agree that jobs (not politics) should be the number one priority for Washington DC.

Sorry, but any country that elected GWB TWICE, and a bunch of 'baggers in the mid-terms, it is definitely a possibility for Palin to become President. Americans seem to be in the business of 'destruction from within' (of course, not all, but far too many of them). The amount of Americans that believe the propaganda that is fed on a continual basis, is at least to me, astounding. What ever happened to thinking for yourself, and actual analyzation of facts?~?

    People: Calm down!!!

You know what, we may need to take a trip in the way back machine and revisit 1996. Back then, liberals were feeling grumpy with their democratic president, who failed to do anything substantively, well, liberal. Booo. Hiss. Some Democrats said. We want a pitcher, not a belly itcher...you get the idea...It got to the point where this die-hard liberal who volunteered for the dude in 1992 even though she wasn't old enough to vote, was thinking about NOT voting for him...

    And then...

And then Clinton won re-election with ginormous numbers. And HE was running against the Senate minority. These "contenders" don't have half the cred of being senate minority leader, with their resumes combined.

    So.calm down!

Yes, Obama isn't polling well...against Generic Republican. But he won't be running against Generic Republican. He'll be running against Mitt Romney, aka Sir. Flips-Alot. or Michelle "Which Way's the Camera Now" Bachmann. Or Herman Cain. Or Ron Paul, for goodness sake. Obama's biggest asset in the 2012 election is the pool of losers running against him!

Also, as far as I can tell...WI, FL, OH and other states with GOP governors all have buyers' remorse...You telling me Obama can't capitalize on that? Please...

I totally and completely agree with Nikogriego, and anon 3:15. Obama has done nothing in opposition of the Bush policies. The TARP bank bail-out, extension of tax breaks to the rich, renewing the PATRIOT act, and the fucking endless wars, not to mention that health care bull shit which is more about funneling money into insurance companies than it is about delivering healthcare. Now they are pretending to argue about increasing the debt? Of course they're going to increase the debt, and they are also going to raise taxes, AND cut services. Our political process is bread and circuses, our politicians and judiciary are in bed with the bankers/corporatists/MIC, not to mention fucking "religious" tax-free NGO's...Yeah, 9/11, no new investigation there, but maybe, just maybe, they'll throw Palin to the wolves and we get some satisfaction over a fake pregnancy.

All other things being equal, no, she could not get elected. But nations do descend into fascism. It is a process, and we are somewhere along the way. I keep saying over and over, that to want Sarah Palin to go away as if that solves the problem, is naive and shallow - although people here say that every day!

The chilling thing that ought to worry us is that Sarah Palin could not have happened a few years ago. She is being massively promoted and supported by very wealthy and powerful interests. That means that she herself is expendable. She can be replaced.

It is the process of deterioration and corruption of our political process that is the issue. The media is a BIG, BIG part of that. A necessary component of any bad regime is to control the media.

Keep your eyes on the ball.

They have corrupted Christianity to the point that those poor suckers want war against TERROR/COMMUNISM/ISLAM whatever enemy is put to them. Religion survives on fear. Fear of the unknown, like what happens when you die. Fear, and Religion have always been big control mechanisms. Look, the Elites are starting to eat their own. We need to sit back and watch the History Show rather than go at each other. Read about the French Revolution, how the tides kept turning and everybody got their chance at the guillotine. Go to you tube and listen to The Youngbloods singing, "Come on people now, smile on your brother everybody get together try to love one another right now" and realize that we are just in a brief snapshot, fading into history. The Palins, pathetic players, to sell themselves as clowns to history.

Listen, that TARP bailout was a necessary evil. If everything fell apart, our economy would be in even worse shape than it currently is. Maybe that was distasteful to some, but honest to God unless you are living in some sort of financial cocoon or bubble - YOU'D BE AFFECTED IF OUR ECONOMY HAD COLLAPSED TOTALLY - if you aren't already. I don't know about folks here, but almost every single family I know has been negatively affected by this horrendous economic situation. The only people I happen to know who "just aren't feeling any recession" - their words, I kid you not - are in the top 2% financial bracket. They lost 30% of their pension plans in '08 just like everyone else, but they had a multi-millionaire brother who quickly replaced the funds and built their portfolios back up. Must be nice, huh? Average Joes and Joans have to hope that the markets stay stable enough for them to recover even a fraction of that. If the economy had collapsed completely, that would be a futile hope by now.

Try talking to a senior about the Great Depression and maybe you'll get some idea of what might have happened without that TARP intervention, regardless of how imperfect on the systemic level. Just look at the European countries teetering on the brink of disaster. Like it or not, that could have been us if we had not stabilized the markets here. I agree the banks got away with far more than they deserved to, but no one would have been helped by approaching it in a more punitive way given the nature of the crisis. Perhaps Obama can tackle Wall Street reform when these dark days are waning, but he'd need more time to do that.

If it weren't for healthcare reform, my daughter would be out of luck for her healthcare as a twenty-something just out of college, not having a job w/benefits at this point, and with no real prospects of one yet. We can carry her on our policy now, as everyone knows. Maybe idealists around here can scoff at that kind of coverage, compliments of Barack Obama and the Dems, but we can't in my house. I am grateful for the outlawing of the insurance industry's pre-existing condition disqualifications, also, and I know many people with chronic diseases which happened to be on that previous list of the 10 exclusionary medical problems, who owe their very lives to that particular reform. The exact people who so desperately needed the coverage were denied care. Changing that one thing was a moral imperative and our President understood that. He didn't let the perfect be the enemy of the good - or the very, very, very good, in this case.

And if you haven't been listening, President Obama is trying his damnedest to extract concessions from these heartless, greedy GOP jerks on the debt negotiations this month. That means getting them to end some of these tax loopholes for the rich. That single shift in policy could bring more money into our budget than anything else. Again, we may have to give on some things like raising the retirement age by two years, but it's worth it. My mother worked until she was 80 because she wanted to, and I would bet many people would be fine to work until 67 if it meant preserving Social Security.

As for the wars, it seems to me at least that there was the troop reductions/semi-withdrawal in Iraq, and talk of further pull backs in Afghanistan and elsewhere. For me, there hasn't been some blind adherence to the GWB/Rumsfeld military policies; it is continually evolving, and evolving towards getting out of there long term. But sorry, once they got us in, we better make sure there is some sort of substantive entity in place when we leave or all bloody hell is going to break lose in that region. If we thought Egypt or even Libya now is threatening to our stability, just let Iraq fall into tribal conflict and you'll see more trouble and higher gas prices and all the rest. (And further resurgence of terror activities as well. What was not a threat before Bush invaded is now most definitely a problem, it can't be denied.)

People don't have the luxury of their high minded principles, in my opinion. Better let those go for now or risk aiding and abetting the TRUE enemy - the Republicans. They will gut our country within an inch of its former life if they are allowed back in the White House any time soon. Too much damage to undo, and we can't afford to concede even a day to them. They had their turn. It's ours now.

Just because Barack Obama isn't a hardcore Progressive does not mean he isn't a good Democrat. He is a pragmatist, and that's just what we need with the divisions in our deadlocked government.

President Obama will win against anyone the Republicans put against him. I'm a little disappointed that people don't realize nor recognise that he's accomplished more in less than one term, than Bush did in eight years, against immense odds and while dealing with the Republican's dithering on acting on important issues for the American people.
Is Obama perfect? no. Did we elect him to be president or jesus?

love me some maher but I disagree with him on this one, gryphen. he is just answering off-the-cuff. if he actually had time to contemplate the question and take all factors into consideration, he would know that she would never become president.

we can all come up with many reasons why she wouldn't be elected, but it really comes down to 2 things:

    1) her base is tiny and her negatives are huge - her support has been overblown by the media and will not transfer into votes. reasonable people who do not like obama will SIT HOME before they'd go out to vote for that lunatic.

    2) she QUIT ON HER STATE. americans will never vote for a president who quit on their constituents for no good reason. and no matter how she tries to spin it, there was no good reason and people aren't all-of-a-sudden going to start saying "oh yeah, she had to quit! she had no choice!" no, not gonna happen. in palin dreamland that is the view, but not in the real world.

perhaps maher is just saying this because he wants her to run - it would be endless material for him!

you say: "Obama is their man, as he has done many things that these people approve of, and is much more center-right than he seemed when he was campaigning."

I would add that any president who wants to live to see another day will do what these people approve of. that's the way it works. we can expect the same thing from every president to come in the forseeable future. I consider myself pretty far to the left but I also understand that presidents have to broker deals that none of us could fathom. while we all sit back and criticize, we should all keep in mind that we little people really don't understand or live the big picture in the same way that the power-brokers (billionaires) do. and to that I say - obama is doing a decent job for what he's got to work with.

The President has my confidence based on his record and obvious intelligence and knowledge.
Mom is 91 and goes to senior citizens lunch most days. She has the same lunch partners and has a good relationship with most people as she is a peach.
Two gentlemen who sit with her said "what has Obama done?" and I printed out a list for them. Mom can't understand why some people don't know all that our President has accomplished, albeit with a wall of "NO" constantly blaring from the GOP & teaparty types.
Now Mom is answering to these types with, "you can google the latest list of our Presidents accomplishments", and leave it at that.
He is playing chess with the party of NO, and they are playing checkers, as someone said recently.
The entire GOP & tea party have less intelligence than this one person.
One thing I hope the Dems & Progressives do that the GOP does, stick together!!!
That's how the right wing could take the Presidency, they stick together and vote, no matter who the candidate ends up being.
Bashing President Obama is the most ignorant thing anyone can do unless of course they are really a right wing fan!
The right wing has systematically put in place as many of their ilk as possible over the last 30 years and when the Dems weren't looking(voting), they took over the country and are slashing jobs(government employees)not lending money to business(so economy won't grow & jobs numbers will show up bad) to make Pres. Obama look bad.
Their goal: one term for Pres. Obama!
    They have stated this!
There are no words for the stupidity of people who expect one person to get all the crap that has happened cleaned up and the country put back in shape and all in 21/2 yrs.
    Really?
The only power we have is to vote and encourage others to vote.
and yes, to read and learn about all the players.
Hopefully, faux news will be put back in a hole after the fallout from the uncovering of the corrupt Murdoch media. He has infested the world with cynicism and created a place for everyday monsters to thrive and feel comfortable even when exposed as low life. Too big to fail Murdoch and Faux news could go the way of: The Fall of Rome; The Hearst Organization; and so many other BIG companies or people who forgot the rules of the road and the most important one of all, do unto others as you would have them do unto you!
