From Kickstarter:
Nick Broomfield's quest for the real Sarah Palin involves battling the icy snows of Alaska in mid-winter to speak to the school friends, family, and Republican colleagues that in previous days gave their heart, soul and belief to the charismatic, charming, intoxicating ex-hockey mom. But it's not all plain sailing. People are frightened to talk; Wasilla makes Twin Peaks look like a walk in the park. It's a devout evangelical community – 76 churches with a population of only 6 thousand, and the Crystal meth capital of Alaska. Broomfield brings his celebrated wit and determination to cracking her story.
The provocative and entertaining documentary is directed by Nick Broomfield (Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer, Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam,Kurt & Courtney) and Joan Churchill. The film is produced Marc Hoeferlin (Battle for Haditha).
But producing the documentary was only half of the process. We need YOUR help to raise enough money that he can distribute the film. The release of Nick’s film before the potential candidates of 2012 announce their candidacy is a pivotal moment. Getting this film into theaters, and educating the public on Palin needs to happen as soon as possible to truly allow Nick’s vision to be achieved. This Kickstarter will help raise the capital to fund the nuts and bolts of the distribution (print and advertising fees) and help get SARAH PALIN: YOU BETCHA! into theaters.
As of last night when I wrote this post, Nick had about $1,893.00 ($100 of it was from me), however he needs about $30,000 to start the wheels moving toward distributing the documentary and making it available to movie audiences.
I can attest to the struggle that Nick went through to find people to go on record, and allow their images to be filmed, for this important documentary (Hell even I balked at first!) I would really hate to see all of that hard work go to waste.
And remember, unlike Palin's propaganda film "The Undefeated," THIS movie did not have anybody with one million dollars to help finance it or a panting flock of sycophants ready and willing to pimp this movie to friends and family on behalf of their idol.
That movie failed miserably because it was telling an obvious lie, however this movie is trying to get the truth about Snowdrift Snooki, to a wider audience of Americans who may not be interested in sitting down with a good book.
Anyhow I know that Nick and his team would appreciate anything you could do to help. And so would I.
(P.S. The link to donate is the Kickstarter link at the top.)
Thank you ahead of time, for your support.
Is this the one that will be at tiff?
ReplyDeleteI already pledged $150. It's important to know that this is only a pledge not a donation. You will only be charged if the full amount is realized!
ReplyDeletethis is not money down a rat hole it's a money back guaranteed investment. PLEASE EVERYONE MAKE A PLEDGE.
Wow, I am a little perplexed. I am having a hard time with this, Gryphen. I would love nothing more than to see this freak show end; however, I find it hard to take this man seriously if he has to beg to get the film distributed. Did he not think this through? I thought he was experienced at this. I don't care about the money aspect of it, it just looks bad and he will lose credibility. Scara's star has burned out and I am thinking this film is not going to do much any way at this point. Maybe he should wait to see if she runs, THEN, he will be rolling in the dough with people begging him.

ReplyDeleteAt first I thought this post was a dig at the bots' campaign to pump up The Undefeated. Then I realized it was serious. Sheesh.
ReplyDeleteHannity asked Iowa crowd whether Palin should run -- and the crowd's response -- NO!!

Is he selling shares? If so how much for what cut? 5K for 1% ?
ReplyDeleteThis is destined to be a cult classic up there with the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
What could be more cool than making money off of Sarah?
I just donated $250.00 and I hope he's able to raise the money. But, Gryphin, you might want to tell people that they actually have to go to the Kickstarter link at the top to donate. Or put a special link up in the base of the post. It was a little difficult to find.
ReplyDeleteNick has until September 3 to make the $30,000. If donations don't reach that total, then you never get charged. Payment is made through your Amazon.com account.
ReplyDeleteI donated $100. The only way it gets charged to my account is if Nick makes it to that $30,000 total.

ReplyDeleteCheck out Kathleen Parker's column on Simple Sarah today:
In an e-mail to her fans, she wrote: “The heartland is perfect territory for more of the One Nation Tour as we put forth efforts to revitalize the fundamental restoration of America by highlighting our nation’s heart, history, and founding principles.” (Homeland Security reportedly has sought help from idle bloggers fluent in Palinspeak to translate the meaning of this sentence.)
Mighty No More: Todd And Sarah Palin Get Called Sellouts At Iowa State Fair
ReplyDeleteWhat was supposed to be a publicity stunt to keep their fame clock from expiring turned interesting as Todd Palin was confronted by an Alaskan at the Iowa State Fair who called Sarah Palin a sellout.
A woman was engaged in a conversation with Todd Palin and said, “We’re from Alaska. We were heartbroken when she quit.” Todd Palin responded with, “What would you recommend doing when you got $600,000, $700,000 of debt hanging over your head, and you still have all these people filing complaints against you? What would you do?” The woman was prepared and responded with, “Well, you go for the money obviously. That’s what she did. Everybody in Alaska thinks she sold out.” Todd stuck to the talking point, “You have that hanging over your head, complaint after complaint. What would you do?” She replied, “Wait for the complaints to pan out.” Todd came back with, “Hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. You got all this debt going to be there.” The woman got the final shot in by saying, “It’s not there anymore is it? You got quite the deal,” and she is walked away she turned around and said, “sellout.”

For those not familiar with kickstart, it's an organization that funds the arts on a grassroots level. Your pledge only kicks in and gets charged when it's fully funded.
ReplyDeleteIt's a perfect way to get good projects into the light of day. The costs to produce, edit, film, voiceover, research and preview the end product aren't inluded in the pledge, only the costs to promote and advertise.
A lot of people loathe paypal, and amazon processing the payments is a huge plus.
It would be a travesty if this film doesn't make it to theaters. I've donated fifty and passed the link to people on my email address book. Facebook, twitter, and word of mouth.
I know money is tight, but a little from many can add up to a lot. Think of each dollar as a huge middle finger to all the bots who desend on blogs to show their ignorance.
Is there a way for Mr. Broomfield to get screenings other than the bigger outlets ? I know for sure that colleges, art houses, indie venues, etc. would be happy to host a "You Betcha" party and screening if they got to keep a portion of ticket sales. They could then make $$ off of beverages, food and any kitchy Sarah chotchkey they chose to sell. I have access to a venue that I guarantee I fill with 200 people in no time. Even better, make it a fundraiser for Planned Parenthood and/or any "Save the Animals or Environment" project and you'd have to add a 2nd showing.
ReplyDeleteTIFF is a huge movie festival. Buyers come there to buy films and distribute them. It is a film festival and a film market. I think this campaign is a back up plan that is why there are pledges and not donations. What Nick needs to do is get buyers to his movie, and I have no doubt it will be bought. Weinstein would love it. He just threw a fundraiser for Obama. And he is known to market the hell out of a film.
ReplyDeleteI donated.
ReplyDeleteIt's important to note that documentaries (even awful ones like the undefeated) receive backing from various sources. Some are fortunate enough to receive backing from large corporations with similar message goals. Others from millionaires. But some need help from the little people. Perhaps after the Toronto Int'l Film Fest finding a distributor will not be difficult, but in the interim, I'm happy to get the message out. If it changes one mind I'll consider it money well spent, a great investment.
I hope it makes it to Denver!

Has Mr. Broomfield applied for the AK tax credits that were available to Sarah and her other endeavors?
ReplyDeleteI just added my $100.00. Thanks for the link.
ReplyDeleteI will support the truth, which is clearly this film.
ReplyDeleteSarah Palin and Todd have words...
ReplyDeletehttp://palingates.blogspot.com/2011/08/sarah-palin-and-todd-have-words.html
Gryphen, would it not be less expensive, and more widely distributed to find a tv network who is willing to advertise it and show it?
ReplyDeleteOne fairgoer confronted Todd Palin over his wife’s decision to quit the Alaska governorship, resulting in a viral video exchange that was captured by the San Francisco Chronicle’s Dollar Store Microphone Department. The paper also caught the extended remix of Jake Tapper’s heifer-delayed Q&A with Palin.
ReplyDeleteThe first clip picks up just as Todd Palin tells the woman to watch The Undefeated, the recently-released Palin documentary, to find out why she quit. Todd asks her, “What would you recommend doing when you’ve got $600,000-700,000 hangin’ over your head, and you still have all these people signing ethics complaints against you? What would you do?”
The woman’s well-played response? “Well, you go for the money, obviously. That’s what she did.”
Todd gamely hangs in there, but the confrontation ends with the woman walking away, yelling “Sell-out!”
Aside from being a tasty morsel of deep-fried viral junk-food, the exchange illustrates the true folly of the media’s (admittedly waning) fascination over the “will she or won’t she” question. Setting aside all of Palin’s pros (energetic supporters, megawatt charisma) and cons (insert your own list here), the minute Palin’s presidential ambitions morph from entertaining bustravaganza to actual campaign, the fact that she quit the governorship instantly settles the question.
The Chronicle also captured an impromptu Palin press gaggle at the Iowa State Fair and Ambient Noise Jamboree, including some Palin responses that were left out of This Week’s Iowa clips package. Palin talks a bit more about the time frame for her decision, and says she would run an “unconventional campaign,” and would look to hire people “outside that political bubble.”
Palin also made a rare admission of a mistake, backing off of an earlier statement (and possible dig at newly-minted candidate Gov. Rick Perry)that Alaska’s constitution provided for “very, very strong governor’s office,” as opposed to Texas. Palin volunteered, “We want conviction and passion and candidness — even if through that candidness you make mistakes and you say things like ‘the executive power in Texas is different than the executive power in Alaska.’”
On her deadline to decide if she’s going to run, Palin told Jake Tapper, “I don’t want to be seen as stringing people along,” and, in explaining how the long wait would be unfair to supporters, spoke about the necessity of letting them know who they should support. After several recent statements in which she talked about her decision in terms of releasing her supporters to other candidates, though, it certainly is beginning to seem like those supporters are being strung along.

Lieberman book recounts pep talk with Palin

I'd say if you donated to send Dennis Zaki to Emmonak 2+ years ago so he could put to film the plight of the villagers Palin was ignoring, or if you donated money last year to Zack Roberts for his documentary "The Rogue Candidate: Sarah Palin's REAL Alaska", you should make it "third time's the charm", and give...one...more...time.
ReplyDeleteI wish this guy all the best, and his film can't help but be a far superior product to the slop thrown to wutzerface's worshippers. But honesly I have no interest in seeing her image for more than a few seconds at a time on various video clips and blog sites. If it's shown somewhere in libraries for free, I might go, but otherwise, I would never pay money to look at that thing.
ReplyDeleteOT, but what strikes me about the clip is how incredibly different Palin looks in photos presumably taken less than 1-2 years ago. Women's looks are known to change around menopause, true, but Palin's physical transformation is stunning. It'd be an interesting exercise to put together a photo montage: then vs now.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the opportunity to support independent film making.
ReplyDeleteI can't make a big donation, but I can put in $60. This is important - a corrective to the propaganda.
I just pledged $25, my tiny shovelful of sand in this effort to finally bury Sarah Palin once and for all. It worries me a bit that there aren't more of us here on Immoral Minority willing to give a just a little for this cause. At least pass it along, all you Facebookers and Twitterers -- maybe you can help generate a groundswell.
