President Obama tries to reason with Teabagger in Iowa. You can imagine how THAT goes. Update!

In my opinion the President shows an amazing level of restraint, and actually attempts to explain to this guy why people are upset with the Tea Party.

I don't know if Joe Biden called them terrorists or not, but if he did he was absolutely right to do so.  These poorly educated amateur politicians, who have been given FAR more power than they can handle, are systematically destroying this country, and should be called out on that behavior.

By the way the guy's name in the video is Ryan Rhodes, he is the founder of the Iowa Teabaggers and endorses "crazy eyes" Bachmann.  That should give you some idea as to what the President's chances were of explaining anything to this wingnut.

Update: According to the Washington Post Fact Checker, Biden NEVER called the Teabaggers "terrorists."  (H/T to Jim in Texas.)

The majority of rightwingers either don't say anything about the majority of rightwing terrorist acts, but often try to excuse them (ie, the murder of Dr. Tiller and the guy who flew his plane into the IRS office).

    Encounters with teabaggers are no win situations for the president. He should avoid them and end them quickly when they occur. No matter what he says to them, they won't listen and will continue to spew their imbecility. It's like trying to reason and debate with a toddler. They'll stick their fingers in their ears, stomp their feet, and scream "NO, NO, NO, NO, NOOOOO!"

    Even when confronted with their errors, they will not acknowledge them or listen. They will, however, claim that they spoke "truth" to power and make sure that their encounters are posted on the web.

    The president should simply ignore them. If they become belligerent the Secret Service can engage them in "debate."

    Sarah Palin Is a Tease!
    Even after Michele Bachmann’s win in the Iowa straw poll last weekend, Sarah Palin won’t go away. Is she really serious about running for president? As Meghan McCain sees it, not a chance.

    ...Much of Sarah Palin’s allure seems to fade by each passing talking point of Michele Bachmann’s that goes viral. And with each passing day, Sarah Palin looks more and more like a confused woman who can’t decide which way to go. The last thing our country needs right now is a president who can’t make up her mind or make tough decisions. As Americans, we live in perilous times and what we need is real leadership. Republicans really have a chance to win the White House in 2012. We don’t need to be distracted by Sarah Palin’s attention-seeking antics anymore, unless of course she actually decides to stop flirting and finally make a move to announce her candidacy. Until then, the rest of the country is trying to decide between the candidates who are actually running.

    Just FYI, the Decorah (Iowa) News reported that the President responded "gracefully" when an "individual began shouting questions."

    As usual: Crude, unmannerly teabagger; poised, composed, and, above all, reasonable President Obama.

  10. I couldn't understand what was being said, but I did note the body language. President Obama was warm and respectful, even touching the woman like one would try to calm an upset dog or child. The man had a defensive stance, like someone who was about to yell, "I double-dog dare you."

    PETA does not engage in terrorism; they are a legitimate non-profit organization. Radical, arguably too offensive at times, yes. Killers and terrorists, no.

    And to the best of my knowledge, any crimes that ELF has ever committed has not resulted in the death of a human being.

    I have to say I'm amazed that you would fall for this rightwing trick to get the left on the defensive. Seriously. To put PETA or even ELF in the same category as monsters who burst into churches with guns a blazing; who gun down dozens of children trapped on an island with no escape; and who blew up an entire building including a daycare center with innocent children, just absolutely stuns me.

    Tea Partiers Care More About Godlier Government Than Smaller Government

    It's no coincidence that Rick "I'll Have God Fix All of Our Problems" Perry and Michele "I'll Have God Pick My Campaign Staff" Bachmann combined captured 60 percent of the tea party movement's support in the latest GOP primary poll. Of course, "more God" and "less government" are hardly mutually exclusive — in fact, some tea partiers, like Jim DeMint, see them as one in the same. Whoa, wait, we just had a thought: Would it be possible for God to make a government so small that even he couldn't fit inside of it? Sorry for blowing your minds.

    However, prolonging such encounters does nothing for the debate or for the president. The reasonable people whom already are suspicious of the teabaggers are unlikely to be swayed and the teabaggers themselves absolutely won't be swayed.

    Teabaggers who seek to ambush the president in this way strike me as being equivalent to Fred Phelps and his bastard clan from Westboro Baptist Church. They are merely trying to provoke the president into a testy response.

    By engaging these cousin humps the president elevates them and lends them an air of legitimacy that they do NOT deserve.

    I still say he should just ignore them. If they then choose to try and shout at the president they will appear as foolish and bullying. Plus, any aggression on their part would be quickly dealt with by the Secret Service. Now THAT'S footage I'd like to see.

    What beliefs predict a Tea Partier?

    ...So what do Tea Partiers have in common? They are overwhelmingly white, but even compared to other white Republicans, they had a low regard for immigrants and blacks long before Barack Obama was president, and they still do.

    More important, they were disproportionately social conservatives in 2006 — opposing abortion, for example — and still are today. Next to being a Republican, the strongest predictor of being a Tea Party supporter today was a desire, back in 2006, to see religion play a prominent role in politics. And Tea Partiers continue to hold these views: they seek “deeply religious” elected officials, approve of religious leaders’ engaging in politics and want religion brought into political debates. The Tea Party’s generals may say their overriding concern is a smaller government, but not their rank and file, who are more concerned about putting God in government ...

    Yet it is precisely this infusion of religion into politics that most Americans increasingly oppose. While over the last five years Americans have become slightly more conservative economically, they have swung even further in opposition to mingling religion and politics. It thus makes sense that the Tea Party ranks alongside the Christian Right in unpopularity.

    When I read this article, is when I fell in love with Obama the kind man. This speaks volumes for me:

    ...Although she explained the situation to the man behind the counter, he showed no signs of mercy.

    -I started to cry, tears were pouring down my face and I had no idea what to do. Then I heard a gentle and friendly voice behind me saying, 'That’s OK, I’ll pay for her'.

    Mary turned around to see a tall man whom she had never seen before.

    -He had a gentle and kind voice that was still firm and decisive. The first thing I thought was, Who is this man?

    Although this happened 20 years ago, Mary still remembers the authority that radiated from the man.

    -He was nicely dressed, fashionably dressed with brown leather shoes, a cotton shirt open at the throat and khaki pants, says Mary.

    She was thrilled to be able to bring both her suitcases to Norway and assured the stranger that he would get his money back. The man wrote his name and address on a piece of paper that he gave to Mary. She thanked him repeatedly. When she finally walked off towards the security checkpoint, he waved goodbye to her.

    The piece of paper said ‘Barack Obama’ and his address in Kansas, which is the state where his mother comes from. Mary carried the slip of paper around in her wallet for years, before it was thrown out.

    -He was my knight in shining armor, says Mary, smiling.

    The Tea Party As A Christianist Force

    We've been told again and again that the real motivation of the Tea Party is a multi-partisan movement to bring the debt and government under control. I've never believed this, partly because these people were never to be found under Bush. It was primarily a laundering device to disappear the Bush years, re-brand the GOP as a wholly different entity and thereby avoid the long wilderness that the catastrophes of the first decade of this century might have led them into.

    Now we have some large data sets to review the reality. And the reality is that the Tea Party is the Christianist right-wing of the GOP.

    Hiding in Plain Sight: Racism's Role in the Tea Party GOP's Efforts to Destroy President Barack Obama and the U.S. Economy

    ...As the pundit classes try to make sense of the debt ceiling-credit downgrade political drama, they are overlooking a central element in the Tea Party GOP’s almost mouth-frothing resistance President Barack Obama since his landslide election in 2008.

    While the black blogosphere (and even Twitter) has been bubbling with this issue for some time, the mainstream media has been dancing around a fact which remains hidden in plain sight. Just as they did with their poor coverage of the Birther issue, and out of fear of a Conservative backlash, the mainstream media is loathe to speak truth to power and point out the obvious: racial hostility is one of the primary forces driving the opposition of the Tea Party GOP to President Obama. This has been evident during the debt ceiling debate and on policy matters across the board. To fail to understand this most basic of realities is to fail to understand American politics in the Age of Obama.

    I just mentioned on Facebook how one of the creepiest things about the new "conservatism" is how they have lost the one time cornerstone of that political stance:

    To CAREFULLY inspect each and every person and concept, PRIOR to accepting them, simply because they appear to come from the same "side."

    The most insane example of that being the proud carrying of the nickname "Dittoheads" by those who worship the silly utterings of Rush Limbaugh.

    It is NOT "conservative" to automatically feel the need to defend someone like the braindead Michele Bachmann, whose latest gaffe is asking her fans to help celebrate Elvis Presley's "Happy Deathday."

    It is NOT "conservative" to rush to your checkbook to send your hardearned money to charlatans like Palin and Trump, who figured out what a gold mine there is, in pretending to run for President.

    It is not "conservative" to ignore how the S&P people have tried three times so far, to clarify that the credit downgrade was simply due to how rightwing extremists loudly declared their preference to avoid paying the nation's debts (and NOT anything President Obama did).

    I used to consider myself a conservative...worried about conserving the environment, about reckless spending on government programs that were obviously not helping anyone, and about seeing the vision of the founding fathers continue to be the driving force of the nation.

    As those who continue to call themselves conservative, show anything BUT such concern, means I can no longer with good conscience, call myself what I now view as a BAD WORD.

    Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry’s Politics Betray The Teachings of Christ

    ...Bachmann and Perry have demonstrated that not only do they not love their neighbors, they hate anyone who does not adhere to their twisted religious views and neo-conservative agenda; more importantly, they hate people who need assistance. Both of the false Christians have shown their contempt for the poor by cutting programs that are specifically meant to feed and house the poorest among us. Each of the fakers claim that spending cuts are necessary because the government is too big and the country cannot afford to help poor mothers and disadvantaged children, but they have no problem giving the wealthy tax breaks and corporations entitlements. Their religion’s namesake said, ”If you want to be perfect, go sell your belongings and give to the poor” (Matt. 19:21). Bachmann and Perry take from the poor with Draconian spending cuts so they can give to the rich, and it is curious that millions of conservative Christian voters know what Jesus said and still support the candidates that promise to continue depriving the poor of necessities like food and shelter.

    Fox News Accuses Obama Of Ripping Off Sarah Palin’s Bus Tour Idea

    First Alan Colmes got in a nice about dig about Palin, “I’m surprised Sarah Palin isn’t following him in her bus like she does every other event, before she quits her bus tour like she just quit the Iowa tour, but she should be in the bus behind like she goes to the events and tries to suck all the oxygen out, so where’s she?”

    Monica Crowley then said, “By the way this bus tour is derivative of Sarah Palin’s bus tour. He ripped her off.”

    Colmes replied, “Oh yeah, he’s copying Sarah Palin, right.”

    How soon they forget over at Fox News. On December 15, 2007, then candidate Barack Obama launched a bus tour of Iowa. In March 2008, candidate Obama embarked on a bus tour through Pennsylvania. On August 29, 2008, Barack Obama and Joe Biden embarked on a bus tour of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. August 29 also happens to be the same day that John McCain introduced the Palin virus into our political eco-system.

    While Sarah Palin was playing the part of the Unknown Governor in Alaska, Barack Obama was out riding the bus and talking to the American people. Of course, the modern American political bus tour can trace its origins back to JFK’s bus tour of West Virginia in 1960, but ever since the automobile replaced the horse and buggy politicians have gone on bus tours.

    The notion that anyone is ripping anyone else off is just plain silly, but Fox News personalities have to say something to justify the fact that Roger Ailes essentially piled up a million dollars in the middle of the room and set It on fire when he hired Sarah Palin. Never has a million dollars bought so little as when Fox News brought Sarah Palin on board.

  59. I LOVE President Obama. He's on a well-deserved vacation now and the Republibaggers are ready at the diss . . . I guess they forgot about "W," who spent over three years at Camp David and his Texas ranch. Remember Harriet Miers and the August 6th memo? But he was clearing brush, so it was OK!

    REASONING with Baggers is impossible. Here's a partial list of those who are far easier to 'reason' with:

    * Carrie Prejean
    * The Shark from Jaws
    * Gary Busey
    * Voldemort
    * The Salahis
    * Vlad the Impaler
    * Jabba the Hutt
    * Annie Wilkes from Misery
    * Gollum
    * Nurse Ratched
    * Moriarty
    * Elle Driver
    * Nosferatu
    * Orly Taitz
    * Hal 9000
    * Claudius from Hamlet
    * Charlie Sheen on drugs
    * The Spanish Inquisition
    * William Jennings Bryan
    * Kryptonite

    I'd like to kick the asses of those fucking teabagging assholes for talkint to the president that way. If I'd been there, I'd have been in their faces immediately. Fucking slags. Forgive the language, but these types of asshats deserve no respect. Really funny that the slag with him told the president it was the lefties that were doing violence. Hardly, its just their types that does! Righties are the violent revolutionaries these days.

    womanwithasardinecan, fine, you think PETA are idiots and assholes. Does that warrant taking it a huge leap forward and lumping them in with fucking terrorists???? As for ELF "eventually" going to hurt somebody, I repeat: they have not killed anyone and in fact they go out of their way to make sure they don't. I don't recall rightwing terrorists having that as one of their own caveats.

    And yes, you ARE falling into the rightwing trap when you drag out groups that have never killed human beings, and especially when you drag out groups that are legitimate organizations like PETA.

    PETA does not engage in violence. Playing fast and loose with facts is what conservatives do. The rest of us must remain very vigilant about our own use of information, even (especially?) in casual blog comments.

    I don't know the schedules on these things, but can Sarah wait to declare until after most of the debates have passed?

    If she waits till the winter, whoever of today's candidates is left will have been saying the same thing for about a year. Sarah could come in saying the same vacuous talking points she has say since fall 2008 and sound like a fresh breeze.

    The hoopla of McGinnis' book will have died down, and if she survives that and a couple of other exposees she would look like a tough survior with a fresh message.
    Also too, the candidates of today would have blooded each other so badly that Sarah's problems might seem inconsequential in comparison.

    Phoebes in santa fe. I agree. The tbagger lady was a few leaves short of a bag. Apparently the woman had never heard of Timothy McVeigh.

    I wondered if she was thinking of Ted Kaczynski. But he was para-schiz, a little hard to label politically.

    So she was just pulling her nastiness out of her #$%^. It really had to do with being nutz.

    First of all, this is my response to the blonde bitch with the fucked up statistics.

    http://www.addictinginfo.org/2011/08/03/terrorism-from-the-right-wing/

    Second of all, it is my fervent hope that what we have witnessed between Obama & the GOP is Ali's rope-a-dope in action.

    He has let him self and the progressives get pounded and pounded by the hulking neo-cons until they look like the idiots they are and now every one has seen it. Their approval ratings are at historic lows. People are waking up to the fact that the TeaPotty are not going to work with him in ANY way even for the greater good of the country. They have an agenda and its the destruction of America.

    NOW is the time for Obama to come off the ropes with some bold policies that reengage his supporters. Many of whom have been losing faith that he has the stamina to go the distance.

    NOW is the time to jab at the GOP with the evidence of their partisan terrorism.

    NOW is the time for the Ali rope-a-dope.

  66. If you think that telling small children that their fathers are murderers is not violence, then you are delusional. There are more kinds of violence than physical violence. Terrorists' primary weapon is fear. How do those children feel? I'm out of here. Death in the family. Fuck PETA.

    womanwithasardinecan, not to belabor the point, but an obnoxious PETA pamphlet is just that. Obnoxious. When you lump them in with terrorists, you're falling right into the rightwing trap of setting up false "but the left does it too!" equivalencies.

    And, it also echoes the rightwing tendency to streeeeeeeetch and manipulate the "terrorist" label.

    The government's official definition of terrorism: "[An] act of terrorism, means any activity that (A) involves a violent act or an act dangerous to human life that is a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or any State, or that would be a criminal violation if committed within the jurisdiction of the United States or of any State; and (B) appears to be intended (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by assassination or kidnapping."

    Again....an obnoxious PETA pamphlet? Not even close.

    womanwithasardinecan: "I'm out of here. Death in the family."

    Sorry to hear that. Truly, for what it's worth. Had one ourselves recently. 2011 has been a hard year.

    psychological torture is terrorism, and freeing wild animals without first acclimating them to learn to fend for themselves is terrorism of the worst kind.
    Sorry to hear about your loss, surround yourself with supportive people, be gentile with yourself, and know someone is seeing the stars with you and wishing you well.

    Anyone catch Morning Joe this am? Al Sharpton mopped the floor with Pat Roberston.
    Apparently righty Pat feels it's wrong for Obama to go on vacation in Martha's Vinyard after his bus tour, he should go to the outer banks or someplace less elite because people are out of work... etc...

    Sharpton brought up Bush's vacations and free pass by congress to go to war in Iraq, and the unbelieveable amount of vaca time the bushies had at camp david and "The Ranch"

    Then Rightious Right Pat "Went there" with Obama's pastor saying goddamn america for twenty years etc etc.

    Sharpton went off on him, asking if he knew Obama was in the audience during that one speech. Righty Pat kept defending his point... Sharpton clamped on him like a bear trap and quite eloquently laid out the racist issue, the seperation of church and state, and Pat's own hypocricy over the years.... Pat finally caved, but Sharpton wasn't done with him yet. Can't wait to see round two.

    President Obama was extreeeemly kind in giving Perry a pass on his attack on Obama and Bernake.

    Bachman made a statement that the people have " For the first time, Restored her faith in the country"by winning the staw poll ,,,,, Sound vaguely familiar?
    Where's the outrage? Christine O'Donnell, in her upcoming book (Thanks, but no Thanks) admits "I am not a Witch" commercials were a huge mistake on her part." LMFAO!!! '

    Sarah must be gushing with pride! Oh wait, that's venom.

    Anon 6:53 pm: "freeing wild animals without first acclimating them to learn to fend for themselves is terrorism of the worst kind."

    Actually, a wild animal's instincts would probably kick in and it would know how to forage, hide, fight, etc. in the wild. It would be in no more danger than any other wild animal of its species. Hell, even a domesticated cat turns into a shrewd alley cat when let loose.

    And don't you think that being caged and experimented on in laboratories is terrifying for animals, or herded into miserable conditions and then killed in a mass slaughter like factory and fur farm animals are?

    ReplyDelete
  73. Anonymous4:23 AM

    And to add to my comments, PETA doesn't even release animals. They're doing far more effective things to end animal torture, like funding scientific efforts for lab-grown meat that will save countless animals from a sad and miserable life one day. They're also going undercover in factory farms and animal experimentation laboratories to video tape the horrific conditions these animals live in.

    Calling PETA "terrorists" is straight out of the rightwing corporate hack Rick Berman's playbook. http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Rick_Berman
