Now in the interest of full disclosure I have to admit I had NO fucking idea what Palin was trying to say here.
I was so confused that I actually went over to the Sea O'Pee to see if perhaps they had a special Palin twitter salad decoder ring or something.
It turns out they did have some idea of what she was trying to say.
Apparently during Palin's very, very, very brief bus tour/political prick tease, she had stopped by the Lincoln museum. In one portion of the museum is a room called "The Whispering Gallery."
The Whispering Gallery is a twisted, nightmarish hallway where you will hear brutally unkind things said about Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln during their early months in Washington. On the walls are cruel caricatures and barbed political cartoons that attack the Lincolns.
Apparently Palin got her panties in a twist because President Obama had DARED to compare the hateful, insulting, violent things that are currently being said about him to the hateful, insulting, violent things that were said about President Lincoln.
And since Palin had JUST visited the museum this information about the "Whispering Gallery" had not disappeared completely from her brain.....well not yet anyhow.
So is she right? DID Lincoln suffer far more hateful comments and biting satire than our current President has faced?

While I think it's a little arrogant for Barack Obama to compare himself to Abraham Lincoln, I think you'll find that there are few things that people said about Abe that they haven't said about Obama. I think people said that he was stupid and that he was the anti-Christ, but I might be mis-remembering that.
ReplyDeleteI think a more apt comparison is to JFK, who also broke down a barrier and who was called a communist and other assorted bits of lie-based nonsense, particularly in Texas, and particularly in Dallas, and the Warren Commission, let us not forget, was put together to determine whether the rhetoric attributed to JFK's assassination. They said no. It was one of the many things that they were obviously wrong about.

Well, that was another missed opportunity for Quitler. She could have pointed out all the nasty horrible things said about her on here and other blogs telling the truth about her. I don't think it arrogant of President Obama to compare himself to President Lincoln. Much of the same dynamics that fueled the bitterness of his time are fueling ours. The Tea Party may well be descendenats of those that lost the civil war. Their attitudes and hatreds have perpetuated and endured. They both held in times of crisis.

I learned all this stuff in grade school an middle school. I have also visited a lot of historical sites as a kid thanks to my wonderful parents. 3. They said more bad things about Sarah Palin than were said about Abraham Lincoln. Why couldn't Sarah comment about how Lincoln held the nation together when the Southern Slave states seceded from the Union, much like Rick Perry wanted Texas to secede from the US, much like the Tea Party wants to destroy the United States. It takes a strong leader to hold the nation together under those conditions.
If that was all that Sarah got out of her visit, then she missed the part about how a backwoods lawyer educated himself and became president of the United States. Sarah hasn't learned anything, and she dreams of the same office.
I'd like to suggest that Sarah get to work on her next book, a Revised History of the United States as made up by Sarah Palin.

I often hear people refer to President Obama as being arrogant. I can't see that myself, and am wondering what they are talking about. So often people who criticize him for his arrogance also criticize him for his willingness to compromise and negotiate with others rather than to enforce HIS agenda. They say he is too meek which is the opposite of arrogrance.

Obama is not referring to being like the mythical Lincoln, the statue guy or Lincoln, the guy on the money, he is referring to the Lincoln who suffered hatred and death wishes as president. Right wingers don't get this because when they compare themselves to historic figures, they are really comparing themselves to the mythological figures that have been created around the real figures. He didn't say he thought he was as smart as Lincoln.
He didn't say he was as great a statesman as Lincoln.
He didn't say he would be considered one of the greatest presidents of all time, like Lincoln.
He simply said people talk SMACK about him perhaps even a bit more than they talked SMACK about Lincoln.
Ya know, being the first Black President and all. They've called him a terrorist, anti-American, arrogant, and many, many more ugly things which I don't believe reflect the man at all.
I think he is incredibly charming in no small part because he is often so self-depreciating, and he often goes for humor to try and diffuse a situation.
Again, based on the context of what he said, I think it's a strange takeaway to say you think he is "arrogant" because he mentions that Lincoln was also villified in his time.
