News Corp.'s U.K. unit was sued by 13 people Monday and at least 24 since last week over claims related to phone-hacking at the defunct News of the World tabloid.
The latest rash of lawsuits in London includes complaints filed by pop star Dannii Minogue, Paul Burrell, Princess Diana's former butler, and Sara Payne, the mother of a murdered eight-year-old girl, who had close ties to the newspaper.
News Corp. now faces at least 64 lawsuits linked to the phone-hacking scandal that forced the company to shutter the weekly tabloid in July.
The company is facing probes by British police and an independent body set up by the U.K. government into the activities of reporters and private investigator Glenn Mulcaire, who was jailed in 2007 for hacking into voice-mails.
"So far, fewer than 5% of the victims of Glenn Mulcaire have been notified," said Mark Lewis, a lawyer for some phone-hacking victims in an email.
"He was just one agent used by one paper. When the final tally takes place, we will see thousands of claims and more than one paper."
Murdoch has extremely deep pockets, so I hope that this is only the beginning, and that soon Murdoch and the empire he built to suck all of the integrity out of journalism, both here and in Britain, will be no more than a distant, and sickening, memory.
His "Deer in the headlights" impersonation is not convincing.....
ReplyDeleteCouldn't happen to a more deserving vile human being.
ReplyDeleteI've said it before; Murdoch is an Australian terrorist meddling in American (and British) politics through hired stooges. How many of these xenophobic mouth-breathers would pay more than a minute of attention to him if HE were the one speaking all that garbage day after day on his propaganda channel. How would he dare claim one pet issue or another is "un-American"?
ReplyDeleteHE'S un-American!
The man looks like a Shar-Pei.
ReplyDeleteIt couldn't happen to a more deserving person.
ReplyDeleteSlime doesn't pay. Or at least not forever.
ReplyDeleteI am not usually a vengeful person, but I'd like to see the thousands of people hurt by this man take every penny he's got, leaving him broke, powerless and alone.
ReplyDeleteDoes it strike anyone else as odd that only 5% of one hacker's victims have been notified? How difficult is it to pick up the phone and say 'your number was found on so-and-so' hacking list?' It was years after the incident before the royal family was notified, even though the police knew it had happened. Why is it taking so long to simply notify the victims? Does British justice just move this slowly or is Murdoch's empire still exerting control over the police? Seems bizarre to me.
ReplyDeleteThis is the tip of the iceberg. This monster conglomeration needs to be held accountable.
ReplyDeleteLove the photos you choose for your posts! Excellent Job!

ReplyDeleteNow that's really funny!
Well she is haggard and is losing her looks. Her inner hag is coming to the surface.
ReplyDeleteThat is her foundation. Looks photo ops, catchy phrases, nothing substantial.
The police dilatoriness is not bizarre as Anon 7.21 says. I don't know about the police in the USA but the UK police forces are both idle and stupid and the slow progress with the investigation is a misguided attempt to lay low and hope that the interest dies off and the connnivance of Mr Plod with Murdoch is forgotten. Add in corruption in the Met, not just of those coppers who sold stories to the press but also the top brass who wined and dined with Murdoch's barons and you have all the explanations you need.
