I found some Ron Paul supporters. Can you say, awkward?

I have to admit that I kind of agree with Ron Paul on this.

I am not somebody who thinks that what these women do should be against the law, though I have great concerns for their mental well being.

I once worked as a bouncer in a strip club and I know that certain lifestyles can really play havoc with your self esteem and ability to resist falling prey to substance abuse and predatory relationships.

But having said that I am not at all convinced that a profession that is as old as human kind itself should continue to be against the law in this day and age. After all is this not the very definition of capitalism?

Your thoughts?

I think a "profession" which consists of men with money (johns and pimps) exploiting women with none should continue to be illegal.

Prostitution should be legalized and regulated, if only for safety reasons. Prostitutes are marginalized. Because their business is illegal, they have little recourse against abuse. That's one reason they can be taken advantage of so easily. Furthermore, they are seen as "fallen women," and get less sympathy because of it.

This is a big reason Shailey Tripp is having such a hard time. "Who's going to believe a prostitute?"

Granted, making prostitution legal wouldn't take the stigma away, but it would give sex workers some protection against abusive clients, or at least the freedom to go to the police if abuse (or theft, etc) occurs.

Of course, if the police are in on some kind of coverup (as in the APD), there is less recourse.

  5. They should legalize it just as soon as they comprehensive immediate test strips that work like pregnancy tests, you pee on the stick and in 1 minute you know if the person has Aids, Chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis, genital warts, herpes, and all of the other dozens of possible infections.Only then is it safe from a public health standpoint. The man who has sex with 1 of these workers in reality has sex with all of her other Johns risk wise. Condoms, you say?Condoms get used wrong, break and have imperfections. The only to not risk an STD is to have 1 partner who only has 1 partner.

If the video is correct, a 30 year history of no HIV is a pretty decent record

And that's apparently only the case because Nevada law regulates the health statues relating to prostitution.

Regardless of moralizing, ethical concerns, or your religious perspective, prostitution has always happened, and always will.

Just like alcohol and marijuana, people will either get it legally or illegally, or make it themselves.

That illustrates the true irony and hypocrisy of the religious minded "small government" ultra right wingers.

They want government out of business, and no regulations at all, but they still want to stick their nose in your sex life, your bedroom habits, and what herbs you may grow in your garden.

Hey Anonymous at 7:00 - what makes you assume all prostitutes are women? Don't Republicans and Afghanis prefer rent boys?

Agree on the legalization and regulation of sex workers, however. They are indeed too easily victimized otherwise.

Or, perhaps I should more acccurately say, more victimized that us non-sex workers are [recalling the recent Hullabaloo column about digging sixteen tons and owing our souls to the company store].

Nup. Not worse, a damn sight better.

I'd prefer a hooker anytime to this bunch of of losers.

Maybe this is why Ron Paul came in second in the NH DEM primary? (Yes, history was made by his finishing second in both parties' primaries, w/almost 19% in the Dem's.)

The more I read, the more I'm convinced it's the police and predatory politicians trying to score points that these ladies need protection From.

Ahh, all these problems that come from sex these days make me pine for the "good old days" when we didn't have any of these worries and life was a "buffet"--as all a girl had to worry about was taking that little pill everyday :-)

I feel so bad for the kids today having to constantly be concerned that they might actually die if they have a little fun.

    Our First Lady is GORGEOUS!

The fifth annual BET Honors awards program featured many stars and celebrated the accomplishments of poet/author Maya Angelou , musician Stevie Wonder , songstress Mariah Carey, filmmaker Spike Lee , the Tuskegee Airmen , and inspirational coach and mentor Beverly Kearney (education). But the person who generated the greatest enthusiasm, energy and perhaps the longest standing ovation was First Lady Michelle Obama.

Obama was introduced by actress Cicely Tyson, who noted the first lady’s many roles and achievements, including being a brilliant attorney, extraordinary mother, champion of military families and the helpmate of the world’s most powerful man.

“As African-American women we get special bragging rights because she’s the first one of us to serve [as first lady],” Tyson said. “In her many roles she has set a new standard that is extremely high for anyone who follows in her footsteps.”

This just in: Barack Obama wins in '12

...President Barack Obama will win re-election in 2012.

    The reason he'll win?

He knows who he is. And the Republican politicians don't know who they are. They've forgotten what they're about, or perhaps like some isolated tribe, they've lost the language necessary to explain it to themselves.

Their voters know this and don't really believe them anymore.

And that's why Obama will win....

As a woman, I love sex and hate to see people treat women's bodies as mere commodities for the purpose of commercializing sex.

Sex should be freely given from one person to another; it's not a product to sell, it's a gift of love.

I will reserve my judgement until I can find info about whether legalizing the profession will eliminate or reduce the issue of human trafficking. A substantial number of women, men and children working in brothels do not do so willingly.

Anon 7:00 here. Yes, I should have included male prostitutes in my statement.

Prostitution is basically a business transaction. It's a contract between two consenting adults. While I can certainly see why people rail against prostitution as having exploitation at it's core (in that case, they are talking about female sex workers), it's still better to have it legal.

We can discuss the extent to which a specific prostitute is actually "consenting," but to me, that is a different issue. And, in fact, the illegal nature of prostitution only intensifies that issue. As I said in my earlier post, a prostitute now has little or no recourse or protection if she is being abused due to the illegal nature of her business.

Needless to say, my views do not apply to prostitution involving minors.

I support Ron Paul's push for more freedoms and liberties. Let's de-criminalize ALL drugs, and treat drug users with love and compassion and give them treatment, legalize prostitution -- get the pimps out of the game and keep the women safe! All that! What I HATE about Ron Paul and what annoys me to no end about his supporters is he -- and they -- are such hypocrites. Oh, the gov't doesn't have the right to tell companies not to pollute and the gov't doesn't have the right to tell businesses that they have to serve African-Americans, but the gov;t does have the right to tell me what to do with my body and decide for me whether or not I have an abortion? And he's anti-gay marriage, too. Why kind of idealism is THAT?

I'll say it again -- he's an effing hypocrite and his followers are brainwashed, ignorant idiots. HE'S NOT A LIBERTARIAN, he's a paternalistic asshat who wants to instill his values on the rest of us.

Criminalizing prostitution only makes a dirtier and more sordid business; easier to abuse the girls and blackmail the clients.

Sunlight is the best disinfectant. Legalize the profession, and make damn sure everyone participating is a consenting adult with recourse to law.

To a previous poster: it is your daughters body, and she will make her own decisions about her sexuality.

Anybody who thinks it's possible to legitimize prostitution by legalizing it is living in a dream world.

Look how often workers in LEGAL professions are treated like shit by management.

Make work about sex, which as much 12:30 AM tries to romanticize it, will NEVER not be regarded as "dirty" by our puritanical society, and the scope for worker abuse is infinite.

Not to mention which, what happens when to a "sex worker" when she begins to age? What are her options then?

Wonder if these women understand that in Ron Paul's America they would be free to decide to use their bodies to service men for pleasure and money if they wished, but not free to decide whether or not their bodies can be used to incubate an unwanted child that might develop as a consequence of that decision? Paul is a 'life starts at conception' anti-choice nutcase--far to the right of a number of the other far right candidates on this issue. Single issues voters are the dumbest people on the planet.

I am a woman and I support the legalization of prostitution 100%The profession has been around about as long as men and women have been on earth. If prostitution is legalized, regulated and taxed much of the abuse and exploitation will disappear. Then women and children could come forward and and be protected without fear of being treated less than as is so often the case. No laws or religious prohibition has managed to stop prostitution.I doubt any more laws against it will change it either. Persons engaged in the sex trade are victimized on all sides.Legalization and regulation would be a start to bringing the end of exploitation to those involved and those that want out.
    Thanks....

@ 6:53 very funny comment, but What do you mean by "finally"? ;o)

I think it should be legalized and taxed, no matter which sex, although I wouldn't condone it for my kids and their friends. The problems I see with prostitution is that it's often used to traffic human beings, enslave them to pay off debt (as in illegal immigrants being transported into the country) and as a cover for child abuse.

I have to call bullshit on the claim in the video about 100 percent efficiency with condoms and hiv.

A percentage of these "ladies" and "gentlemen" are addicted and go into it to fuel their addictions, shoot up illegal drugs, get drunk and perform other sexual acts they can't recall once sober. Who's monitoring them in their off time?
