It is too bad that Julia Sugarbaker is only a fictional character, that the actress playing her is no longer with us, and that she is not actually running for anything. Because I have to say that if she were I would sign on to her campaign in a hot minute.
By the way if Christians ALL conducted themselves as Julia Sugarbaker does, when it comes to the expression of their faith, I would NEVER say one word about them or their religion. Not one.
But sadly that is not the case. And so long as certain religious people insist on injecting their belief system into America's politics, or interfering with the teaching of science to our young people, or bludgeoning the average citizen over the head with constant images and references to their faith on our money, in our pledge, and during our holidays, then I don't see that I have any choice but to address, investigate, and yes even repudiate, the claims of that religion.
I imagine that if I lived in India, and they promised no state sponsored religion, while constantly bombarding me with Hindu imagery and propaganda, that I would have no choice but to address it there as well.
HALLELUJA!!!
ReplyDeleteI always found it interesting that Dixie Carter was a registered Republican and she had a deal with the producers that every time Julia Sugarbaker gave a "liberal" speech on the show (she disagreed with much of what the character believed), she got to sing in a future episode.
ReplyDeleteSo while it would be cool if Julia Sugarbaker could run, I'm not sure I could vote for Dixie Carter as a candidate for anything.
Wow that was powerful! We need to send this out to everyone we know as none of us could have said it better with this much emotion!
ReplyDeleteI knew you would like that one. Julia Sugarbaker was one awesome babe. Can you picture her verbally taking down the Tundra Turd?
ReplyDeleteanon 6:05 Dixie Carter was an ACTRESS and a damn good one... DUH...
ReplyDeleteOH DEAR GAWD! that clip made my day... I couldn't have said it better and I wish with all my heart that MORE people could embrace that kind of thinking and feeling...
I have been a HUGE fan of Julia Sugarbaker... cuz I am so much like her... just wish I was THAT articulate...
I wonder at the folks who want to take so much away from neighbors and fellow citizens(personal decisions and rights), yet claim to want to make our government smaller... scratching head how the government in my bedroom and in my womb makes government SMALLER... and how the government failing to regulate the BANKS makes life better for "all" Americans...
never was a party voter until now...
I am ALL for smaller government with DEMOCRATS in full control... Dems GIVE to the people... Repubs take away...
not a hard decision really... freedom or control?
Repubs have OCD... they want to CONTROL everything, Dems not so much, they seem to trust adults to make wise decisions for themselves... Repubs think they know it all and want to legislate their PERSONAL values on EVERYONE..
Glad to see the GOP presidential candidate pool is so full of Sh, um fools...
OBAMA 2012!!!
I don't know when, how, or why, the religious evangelicals started to believe their ignorance and narrow mindedness was an asset and not a deficit. Did they believe that by identifying with Palin supposedly "Christian" beliefs made them just as intelligent as they thought she was, and that it was time for all Christians to stand up and start imposing their morals on others through government regulations, since they were correct and everyone who believed differently were wrong? I Palin responsible for dumbing down of conservatives in this country?
ReplyDeleteAMEN! I am so sick and tired of Repubs claiming to be the only ones who pray and the only ones who think they are Americans!
ReplyDeleteThat was always my favorite scene from Designing Women . . . .Dixie Carter was a great actress.
ReplyDeleteThe show touched on taboo subjects that were hot button issues like AIDS, religion, sexual harassment and pornography, but was still one of the funniest programs on television.
That was awesome! Thanks for posting Gryphen!
ReplyDeleteCould you imagine Julia Sugarbaker taking on Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, and Rush Limbaugh? I'd pay big bucks to watch that.
One other thing I forgot to mention.
ReplyDeleteThe producers of Designing Women Harry Thomason and Linda Bloodworh-Thomason are good friends of Bill and Hillary Clinton. They even mentioned in an episode that Charlene worked for Bill before he became Gov of Arkansas.
Wow--that was fantastic!
ReplyDeleteJulia Sugarbaker can read you to filth like no other. She is articulate, passionate, funny, smart and sassy and she was my favorite character on the show. Video was a great smackdown.
ReplyDeleteO/T but I just LOVE this picture and wanted to share it. There's awesome stuff being posted over there, so when you're finished here, do check in over there. It always lifts my heart when I see the positive things that Obama has done and how people respond to him:

Who are the last nine people who chose not to go Santorum?
ReplyDeleteFortunately, the fine people over at Jest have created a new video giving us a nice little introduction.

Just like the bus tour - she is showing up at CPAC where the candidates will be. She just has to try and steal the limelight. After 4 years of not even attending, now she will be there. How much did she pay them to let her speak?
ReplyDeleteThat is exactly what everyone has been waiting to hear from the REAL Christians...but all we get is crickets, when the charlatans claim to be speaking for all of them--then spewing racism and hatred, like Bachmann and the other Republicans do.
ReplyDeleteTime to speak up, folks, or be considered phoneys who hide behind a religion you don't even believe in.
Gryphen and many of us need a good laugh as the insanity that fills the airwaves, etc. is non-stop.
ReplyDeleteCheck out a picture posted on twitter of a Romney protestor.

Absolutlely love it!!
gryphen
ReplyDeletecheck TMZ , willow is in news this time. that family loves to be in spotlight.
Julia Sugerbaker would wipe the floor with all the Republican Presidential candidates, especially the one that doesn't even have the guts to run.
ReplyDeleteHow's your effort to run for President without having to run working out for ya Sarah? How did From the Heart do in book sales? How did the Undefeated do at the box office? How was that bus tour to nowhere? Did you feel an earthquake from Iowa Sarah?
You were hoping to be the reluctant candidate, really hoping that the masses would be begging you to apply that servant's heart of yours into the White House? You really thought you had something, and you did for a micro-second, but it lasted only as long as your stunt as a half-term quitting Governor.
Christians KNOW it's wrong to lie.
ReplyDeleteTo cheat.
That one must love one's neighbor and do unto others as one would have done to oneself.
The end never justifies the means.
...except in war...
And THAT'S why they declare war on just about everything.
The WAR on Christmas...
The WAR on terror...
The WAR on drugs...
Class WARfare...
This isn't just an election - it's WAR!
etc...
Go watch Fox News for a day and count the number of times they say WAR over there. Hell, just watch Fox and Friends in the morning and watch and listen to Gretchen Carlson breathlessly lie while the other two idiots nod and smile and say "that's right, that's right..."
...lying through their teeth and they know it.
Next time you hear a Christian mention a WAR on something - you know what they mean: they mean it's ok for them to lie. And cheat. Jesus will forgive them...
because, you see... it's WAR.
Dixie Carter was a class act!
ReplyDeleteGryphen you'll like this clip of Julia going off on a woman who hates gays and blames them for AIDS.

I was a HUGE fan of this show! As Sarah Palin has a Serpants heart pointed out, it was on the forefront of dealing with hot social issues, usually in a very poigniant, serious way, while remaining to stay funny. Dixie was open and honest about her many plastic surgeries and struggles as an aging woman in a field that had few good roles for women her age.
ReplyDeleteI had the once in a lifetime chance/honor to meet and speak with Dixie Carter in the '80's when she won an award at the LA Women in Film Festival, what an approachable, easy going, graceful, gracious and truly funny woman. We were in the "cheap seats" and she and Bea Arthur were kind enough to slog up to the back of the heater and mingle with us "common folks".
That is a fabulous clip, Gryphen! I am so glad you shared.
