Of course, this being a docudrama with its sense of verisimilitude, virtually every frame and sentence is likely to have political implications to one group of viewers or another. That's what I mean in the headline by "so political in so many ways."
For example, I don't think some Palin followers are going to like this depiction of her. More than one adviser raises the possibility of her being mentally ill. And some of the actions and words attributed to her in the film lend credence to that characterization.
I can't wait to hear the self-serving howls on Fox News when they see how Roger Ailes' million-dollar analyst mistake is depicted in the film.
Being portrayed as a "victim" might elicit some sympathy from those who have not already formed a negative opinion of the Grizzled Mama.
However being portrayed by the VERY gifted Julianne Moore as somebody suffering from a mental illness, who was almost placed one 72 year old's heartbeat away from the White House, makes EVERYBODY involved with this woman back then, and of course now, appear to have the worst possible judgement imaginable.
I somehow doubt that people who watch this HBO program are going to be more open to the idea of Palin running for office in the future, or having any say at all in how we choose our leaders.
I can't wait!
ReplyDeleteI think the movie won't generate sympathy except for the real dye in the wool palinbots. Many former SP supporters will see that SP isn't a good candidate.
ReplyDeleteI doubt this movie will help her. Those (few) who already like her will demonize the movie as they did the book. I suppose that for those (many) who did not read the book but who get HBO, the movie could be an eye-opener. I read the book and can't wait to see the movie.
ReplyDelete"Choose me," says Palin in her inimitably tongue-tangled way. A brokered convention is a broken convention and Palin would like nothing better. We can count on her "help," she promises. Yes, Republicans can count on her help to keep the fractured party from uniting before Tampa. Sarah is sky-high on fantasies of a brokered convention that turns to her to lead Republicans against President Obama. From her aborted governorship to her ultimate refusal to join the presidential race, we know Sarah doesn't like long, arduous hauls, but a quickie anointment as savior of a brokered convention -- well, that's another matter! Sarah feels sure she can stick it out for the three months of campaigning against President Obama. Dream on, sweet Sarah, dream on.

She has never left the stage since her awful self was thrust upon the American public. ugh!
ReplyDeleteWe haven't had a sane day of peace since. She just won't go away.
I can't wait to see the HBO movie but I also know it will put her back in the spotlight and her junkyard dogs will be whipped into a frenzy..... 3...2...1
McCain should rot in hell for this...
Ooh Sarah's not gonna like this post one bit. Expect her trollish illogical comments soon if they haven't been posted already. Hey Sarah: You're NOT GOOD ENOUGH for this great country. American patriots decided that in November 2008. Don't you remember your stunning defeat by the hands of President Barack Hussein Obama? You know; the black guy! I do. It was so awesome seeing you cry realizing how hated and REJECTED you were by true Americans.
ReplyDeletePS- How's that fake a special needs pregnancy thingy workin' out for ya? Good? That's what you think. The truth is coming.
Sarah Palin is mentally ill. Fact.
ReplyDeleteShe is a horrible example to girls and women everywhere. Fact.
She is a horrible mother. Fact.
She was the worst governor ever. Fact.
She quit early because the job was too hard and she is lazy and greedy. Fact!
She will NEVER BE president. FACT!
Truth hurts I know troll, but you just have to accept reality. America doesn't want a LOSER QUITTER. She's not good enough for us. Accept it and move on.
You'll wonder where calculating stops and crazy begins.
ReplyDeleteShe's been crazy since she started scheming to stab Mayor Stein in the back for bringing her into the fold. All the carcasses behind her trail should have been a clue to the McCain camp.
Shame on them for not vetting an unknown, a lazy know-nothing nickle-and-dimer completely unfit to lead.
that's the best picture I've ever seen of sarah
ReplyDeleteTeutonic13 @ 4:41 - yes, she'd love nothing more than to be anointed by coronation rather than put in the hard work necessary to earn a title.
ReplyDeleteTroll comments will say, how do we know all this? It's from jealous haters that were threatened by her hard work and ability to connect with real Americans. . .We weren't there, you weren't there, so you don't know her or how she acted.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter Sarah Sycophants, we all know she's teh crazy.
Sarah Palin has no power. Todd Palin's history of hooking up with and pimping out prostitutes to his buddies, plus Sarah's own lies regarding these crimes are enough to keep her truly impotent politically.
ReplyDeleteThis will reinforce the doubts that have since emerged in the minds of even her supporters.
ReplyDeleteMental illness is not political, and most people have some experience, knowledge, understanding and/or empathy for a mentally ill person and the family involved.
Bottom line: the movie's narrative will supply an acceptable explanation for Sarah's many "contradictions" and questionable actions/comments - and justification for marginalizing her as unqualified and irrelevant.
It is the kindest possible solution to the Sarah problem in our national civics. She doesn't deserve such an "out" given her vicious bomb-throwing and nasty trash-talk, her disrespect to the office of the President, her grubbing and grifting. But any out is a good out where she's concerned.
I am worried that the main-stream media will go light on her, paint her as a victim and for those who don't bother to see the movie and not know much about her, will adopt that premise and she will be painted that victim once again. I said this two years ago, we are going to beat the hell out of her and then feel sorry for her, we do it all the time. I guess you will just have to keep up the good work spreading the truth that you do Gryphen, it HAS made a difference.
ReplyDeleteSarah's real mental health issue lies ahead: menopause tends to worsen - exponentially - most conditions, especially the borderline personality disorder Sarah presents with.
ReplyDeleteIt's going to get ugly as she pulls out the stops to get what she wants and thinks she deserves - or is destined for, scarily - which is the be crowned Miss Republican Presidential Candidate in Tampa.
Sure, she'll polish up the pageant-walking, swimsuit and ball gown looks, get out all the double sided tape tricks, and practice for the talent portion.
But I think we'll see more of the elbow fouls, the lying manipulation, and the desperate hustling of the barracuda days.
It's going to be hard to look away.
Right now all the GOP's are saying if Mitt Romney can't win his own state of Michigan, he CAN NOT win the election, doesn't the same go for Palin, could she win Alaska?
ReplyDeleteOkay, yeah, we have to pick on the way Sarah dresses because she still refuses to take advice on how to dress herself. A strapless cup shaped bra does her flat chest no favors. A shiny red button top cut off with a high waisted skirt with nothing to soften the break is such a no-no. Peep toe shoes is not dignified for a conservative audience, but at least those fit (this time.) At least this outfit did not have food stains on it, so there's that.
ReplyDeleteBut look at this, she took a hairdresser's advice to 'go sexy,' on the hair for CPAC.
Bombshell news? WILLOW wants to be a hairdresser? These Palin's really shoot for the stars!

I feel sorry for Ed Harris having to play the villain in this movie.
ReplyDeleteSarah does realize that there is more to be POTUS than fancy pageant walking, winking and waving? Her claim to fame at the moment is bashing President Obama. What will she do once she's president? Oh ya, I forgot Grover Norquist doesn't want a thinking president. He just wants someone stupid who looks good. She's the tea party's queen.
ReplyDeleteJohn McCain, Steve Schmidt and Nicole Wallace should be made to watch the movie "Game Change" every day, for the rest of their lives - with $arah sitting right beside them throughout the movie.
ReplyDeleteThe selection of $arah for VP during the 2008 campaign was unconscionable.
We don't have HBO so I'll wait for your expert analysis my friends.
ReplyDeleteCarry on :-)
Fox Unleashes Crazy Lady Sarah Palin To Claim Obama’s Unfit For Office
ReplyDeleteNot only is Barack Obama more than fit for the presidency, but Sarah Palin’s mental state and obvious delusions make her unfit to even pretend to play a politician on Fox News.
If the ravings of a crazed former reality TV star are part of the big plan to bring President Obama down, the GOP is in a whole lot of trouble.
http://www.politicususa.com/en/sarah-palin-obama-unfit
Sarah Palin is mentally ill. It's evident.
ReplyDeleteAnd her daughter is already showing signs of self-hate. I can't imagine a 20 year getting a face lift, like Bristol has done. I hear from Mercede that Bristol has gotten several facial alterations already.
The Palinbots won't be able to attack HBO the way they could attack authors.
ReplyDeleteThe Media can't shun HBO the way they shunned authors... HBO won't care.
Win, win.
Her current round of appearances is an attempt to influence peoples opinion of the movie.

This is the second time a black entertainer intruded on Palin's spotlight. Michael Jackson died right when she resigned her governorship, but perhaps she welcomed that distraction!

$arah Palin aborted her governorship.
ReplyDeleteThere. I said it. $he had an abortion.
If they are inferring she is mentally ill, I think they are trying to be sympathetic. It at least gives her the benefit of the doubt. Mental illness is treatable.
ReplyDeleteYou can't fix stupid.
Sarah's worshipers won't care how badly she comes off in this portrayal as they will do what they always do when it comes to the truth about their idol. They will repeat the same old mantra that it is all lies and nothing but jealousy from her 'haters'. They will urge Palin to sue but, as we all know, she will never do that.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see it. Got the popcorn and the Schadenfreude all ready to go :)
ReplyDeleteNow would someone please make a movie about a certain mentally ill vice presidential candidate who faked a special needs pregnancy? THAT would be worth watching...
Oh, yeah, almost forgot:
FUCK YOU, MCCAIN!! This is your legacy.
I hope this movie shows the true Sarah. On her Eric Bolling interview, she contradicted herself yet again. She talked about how the lamestream media not only attacked her, but her family. Then, 2 minutes later, she's telling him how her family comes first; then 2 minutes later she's saying how the girls were learning so much on their trip to Washington; then two minutes later, she's saying she was 'game' for a possible future run.
ReplyDeleteHow can someone in a 10 minute interview go from hating attacks on her family to saying she'd accept reconsidering getting involved in a brokered convention, which would put her and her family right back in the limelight. How can her fans believe her claims now when 5 months ago, in October, she told Fox News viewers that her family was the motivating factor to not running. She can't seem to stay focused on any one thing. This should raise a red flag in anyone's mind.
She complains and blames others for hurting her, yet in the same breath is willing to throw her family aside to keep up appearances that she's running?
The woman is sick.
O/T--you have to check out Colbert. He is brilliant!

I have personally dealt with mental illness, with my mother, and to an extent, myself. My mother used to suffer from debilitating panic attacks when I was a teenager, to the point where she didn't leave the house because of, what we called, The Fear. A few years later, during my parents very nasty divorce, I started having the same panic attacks.
ReplyDeleteIt took years of therapy, but both of us are now alright. No more meds, no more therapy, The Fear is gone. However, while we were sick, we were both painfully aware of our illness, and not only the effect it had on us, but how it effected others. My moms attacks were worse, so she made the choice to not drive. If she had a panic attack while behind the wheel, she may cause an accident which would put her and others in danger.
Sarah Palin is dangerous because she has no regard for others, she doesn't care, or choses to ignore, how her mentality affects others. She has influence over her fans, and her mental state bleeds through her words into their idealogy.
She has no place in public policy. As much as I abhor the woman, and what she stands for, I do hope that she gets the mental help that she needs.
Please do take a look at a very good book, The Sociopath Next Door.
ReplyDeleteIt describes Sarah Palin to a T.
Only problem is, in the fifteen pieces of advice about how to extricate oneself from a harmful relationship with a sociopath, one of the first is to have nothing to do with her/him. There is no change possible for this person -- because they think there's nothing wrong with them.
The best we could do is to ignore Sarah Palin -- but she still poses a threat to our body politic, so we must stay aware of what she's saying and what's she's planning.
Her ability to destruct is still there.
Chella: Thank you for sharing your story. So glad to hear things are better for you and your Mom.
ReplyDeleteMy mom suffered from mental illness as well. She was psychotic and bi-polar and suffered terribly. It was a struggle for all of us because she would refuse treatment.
I'm not saying that someone with treated mental illness cannot live fully, work and hold office. Treatment is the key.
Anon 8:13 - no problem. I feel that there is still a huge stigma in this country towards mental illnesses, which I'm sure leads some into denial or stops people from seeking treatment, for the fear of being branded as 'crazy' which is such a shame.
ReplyDeleteEveryone has inner demons, but some of us are wired to handle them better than others. Due to my history of panic attacks, I know that I am prone to high anxiety, but the techniques I've learned in therapy help me not only cope, but also process that negative emotion so it's easier to let go of.
Mental illness is not a life sentence. I would have no problem with someone being in office with a mental illness, SO LONG that it's being properly managed, and does not interfere with their ability to serve with the people's best interests at heart.
Ouch. David Zurawik is a righty so this has gotta sting. I really hope he is right and Moore gets an Emmy.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of when Murdoch's Post trashed The Undefeated.
Sarah can't buy a break. Her only defense is to go on low rated shows like The 5 and flirt with colleagues that laugh behind her back. Look, see I'm not crazy. The only problem is that it just confirms the portrayal of her in the movie as a manipulative whackjob.
I watched her body language and the guy on her left she touched continually. He is the person in the room who likes her the least and she knows this. She focused on him almost exclusively at the beginning of the segment. This is not the the behavior of a woman with intelligence to sell. This is the behavior of a woman who believes she has only her body to sell.
ReplyDelete"I watched her body language and the guy on her left she touched continually. He is the person in the room who likes her the least and she knows this...." My first impression too!!!!
ReplyDeleteYes, she wants to be begged to be Queen.. She misses the adoration of the 2008 convention (before we knew about her).
ReplyDeleteNorquist has promised her that she can lounge all day, then doll up and go out for public appearances. No work, the MEN will handle everything- "don't worry your purty little head, darlin')
Mental Illness is not the same as personality disorder or more specific to Palin, Malignant Narcissism.
ReplyDeleteNaracissism is not treatable.
There is NO cure for Malignant Narcissism.
There is NO therapy for Malignant Narcissism.
Palin not only will not change, she CANNOT change.
She CANNOT be changed.
Hi, again, Chella --
ReplyDeleteThanks for saying this: "Mental illness is not a life sentence."
You're so right about the stigma! I don't share my story (depression, anxiety, etc) outside of a strict circle of immediate family. I wish I could; life would be easier!
I truly believe mental illness is like any other illness. With proper diagnosis and treatment it can be managed successfully.
Thanks again.
Anon 8:13
Thanks to all who shared their stories about mental illness. Yes, there's still social stigma out there that inhibits people from seeking help, and treatment can trasform not only the person suffering, but their circle of friends and families that love them.
ReplyDeleteWhat I like about the HBO movie, is that it depicts Sarah's narcsissist disorder in a visual media. No matter how many books that have been written, the movie will portray it visually, and images are more concrete and solid, especially when done by a great actor/ actress.
I doubt it will change her loyal clingons minds, but anyone who's been on the fence or not read "Game Change" will see for themselves, Sarah Heath Palin, lipstick, warts and all, for the total failure she truly is.
What amuses me is, I recall Sarah saying once, she'll just grit her teeth and bear it. Now she's flapping her lips before it's even shown, so we know it's a good portrayal.
I read the book, and can't wait for the movie. HBO rarely disappoints and they're marketing geniuses.
I look at personality disorder the same way I view addiction and eating disorders (two things I have personally dealt with in the past) it is something that isn't treated, per se, yet managed. I have been sober for four years, yet I know that watching a movie about my drug of choice, or hearing a story about it on the radio, will STILL give me chills of antisipation. I havnt thrown up my food in two years, but I still have to push back the negative thoughts about how good purging feels when I have a bad day.
ReplyDeleteThese are feelings I'll have to deal with for the rest of my life, but they are being managed, and I am proud of the steps I've taken.
When you have someone such a Do No Wrong Sarah, who can't see that they have a mental defect that needs tending to, you see, as we all have, the vicious cycle of highs and lows, and inevitable vortex which takes down everything they touch.
I agree these personality disorders may not be treatable, but with proper behavioral therapy, medication and constant vigilance on the patients part, these disorders can absolutely be managed and they can lead a somewhat normal life.
But that first step needs to be taken by the patient, and in Sarah's case, I wouldn't hold our breath...
