Oh my God! She even dredged up that three year old "controversy" surrounding the David Letterman monologue! How LONG can this woman hold a grudge?
Obviously Palin is still pissed off that Obama did not call her and offer his condolences when the comedians were making fun of her (Which they will NEVER stop doing by the way.) and is now working overtime, with her rapidly decreasing minions, to embarrass him into giving back this money from Maher, which of course he has NEVER RECEIVED.
I don't think that Palin understands humor very well, which is surprising since she had NO trouble laughing along with Bob and Mark when they called Lyda Green, a recent cancer survivor, a "cancer."
By the way this video also fails to mention the huge number of Republicans and Conservatives that regularly appear on Real time, such as Darrell Issa, Michael Steele, S.E. Cupp (also a woman), Dana Loesch (Also a woman, AND a Teabagger!), and even the now deceased Andrew Breitbart himself, just to name a few.
How surprising that none of THEM are singled out for their hypocrisy.
Look I also find some of Maher's humor over the top, and there are certainly times when I have been put off by something he has said. Just like I have by some of my other favorite comedians like Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Chris Rock, and Christopher Titus, just to name a few.
However I certainly would NOT insist that any SuperPAC, or candidate, return THEIR political donations just because I was offended at their jokes. Clearly THAT would be un-American of me.
What Rush Limbaugh did to Sandra Fluke was NOT comedy, he is NOT a comedian. It was nothing short of a character assassination, for which he used a purposefully misstatement of the facts to humiliate this woman for purely political purposes. And what Palin and other conservatives are trying to do here is to create a false equivalency in order to protect Limbaugh from suffering the backlash that he so richly deserves. And which thankfully is proceeding quite nicely.

But they do make an interesting case that Palin was totally irrelevant even before the move came out. For the most part, I agree with this. I do think the movie must've been the nail in the coffin, though, for any high-ranking nitwit (*cough* Newt Gingrich *cough*) who had harbored half a thought of joining forces with her to tap the remaining vein of TeaBagger support. Newt & his ilk aren't Rhodes Scholars, but they aren't that dumb.

Comedians make jokes about all sorts of people. None of the others demand a retraction.

Sandra Fluke, on the other hand, is a law student who testified about a controversial subject. Nothing she said or did warranted the personal, abusive, crude attacks made on her by a radio personality, over three days. On and on and on about her veracity, her behavior, her personal life. He took a private woman and subjected her to his scorn and outrage.
There's no comparison between the you and she. You now have two super PACs, which will say whatever you want them to say and defend your "honor." She has nothing.
One of the things you should be saying is that you support the First Amendment rights of Sandra Fluke, and her personal right not to be slandered by Rush Limbaugh or anyone. Speak up for women's rights, Sarah.

ReplyDeleteThe comedian cannot continue telling jokes about Sarah Palin unless the audience laughs. There are times when Letterman tells a joke about a public figure and it bombs-- no laughs. Letterman wouldn't tell another joke about that person because the audience isn't with him. If you need an instant barometer of public opinion, it IS read in the late night comedians' jokes. They are still getting jokes about Dick Cheney shooting a guy in the face or GWB being dumb. If it resonates, they keep telling it.

A word of caution against the feeling of impending dome for Sister Sarah. As I've visited this site often over the last couple of years and as a European was taken aback by the stupidity of the (religious) right, I've got a distinct feeling that the US hasn't seen the last of her yet (unfortunately). This clip was professional and quite a bit of propaganda (Leni Refenstahl would have drooled). Palin knows that this year is crucial for her (GOP-TeaParty) survival and knows that she (again unfortunately) can become the Shaman of the Sect, throwing a wrench in whatever government rules. I too think Maher goes over the top at times and I don't agree that we should accept Rush's apology as that was a bottom feeder one showing that to accept that rant which is an I'm sorry BUT...most definitely shows how low the stardards are. Rush can stand on a soap box and shout his obscenities at passersby. He/They still have the right to speak their minds. No one has a 'right' to a massive nationwide broadcast. As for Maher, that's a pay to view/hear wherein you are making the choice.
As for Palin -- she's a public figure and an ex-politician -- fair game as public figures are. The only reason Ms. Fluke had a platform from which to respond is the fact that the Kongress Klan locked her out of speaking and therefore became news -- not a public figure -- but a news story which then created interview invites. If they had allowed her to speak -- this would have been a total different story.
Many in the media 'business' that are defending Rush i.e. Maher, etc. -- I believe they are looking from a different light than us, the private citizens. They are confusing free speech with job security.
The 'right' always rants about letting the 'Free Market' work -- well that's what is happening as set out in the email that has been posted on various sites from the owners of the stations.
I think it a grand idea to put ALL the slanderous and sexual comments she has made since she came on the scene out there in one piece. It should go national. The woman needs this done so she can experience and relive the horrible things she has said and done. There are always choices to be made in life-- even if Sarah Palin does not want women to have choice in their reproductive health. Sarah chose to get involved in politics, which makes her a public figure, subject to publicity, criticism, and, yes, cruel tasteless jokes. She isn't the first political figure to become the butt of comedians' jokes, and she wont be the last. Look at the heat that Romney is getting over The Dog on the Roof of the Car story, and it goes back a few more years than Sarah's perceived insults.

The minute that Sarah made her choice (there's that word again), they stopped following her around. She's not running. Some other guys are getting all of the attention. Sarah can't stand being ignored. (She used to be Somebody).
Sarah has also asked for privacy for her family while she made the choice to put them on the stage during the 2008 election. By promoting Bristol as the star of TV and magazines, Bristol has given up her right to privacy, and the privacy of Tripp. You would think that by now Sara would have figured out that sometimes bad publicity is worse than no publicity at all.
All of this is Sarah trying to attract some attention and stay in the media. If she really wants Maher, Letterman and all of the other comedians to stop poking fun at her, maybe it's time for her to get off Fox, close down her Twitter and Facebook accounts and live life quietly and privately like most of us do. This is probably just another one of her shameless stunts to attract some donations for her PAC. If they feel sorry for her, maybe they will donate something.
The rhetoric on all levels is becoming a little over the top. Miss Free Markets Palin and her AIP pimp husband should take a step back and embrace their First Amendment beliefs. As in, the push back against Rush, involves sponsors who, in a business arrangement, feel that their market is best served by placing their dollars elsewhere. If people wish to donate to a particular political candidate, or if a candidate, or PAC accepts donations, that is a function of a free market also. That market that will come to fruition in the November elections.

Until you can show some concern for the President's wife and daughters and not use them for political pot-shots you don't deserve respect. A little time for self-reflection is what you need. These two families come from two very different realms and embody very different ideologies. I realize that Palin represents "the base"; she does that well and those that are like her and her family appreciate that she is "just like them". She represents "the base" well except that "the base", while they have family dynamics and intelligence in common with the Palins, must realize that they no longer have family economics in common with the Palins. The Palins are rich and stupid while the base remains poor and stupid.

I've been trying objectively to understand how Palin can view things as she does. It seems she truly comprehends very little at all, has no sense of perspective, no logical reasoning or intellectual clarity, but remains in an egoistic bubble of self-interest where everything is judged emotionally, is considered personal, and where she is completely certain at all times that her view and her needs and concerns are the only ones of value. Egoism (unlike simply being egotistical) is an all pervasive frame of reference where self is all. It's pathological. This explains her ease with lying in the face of evidence to the contrary; in her world what she says and feels is all that matters.

Absolutely agree with you. A week ago I came through SeaTac on a long haul from London. Since I didn't have checked luggage, I ended up first in line for Customs with no one behind me....and with a young, extremely talkative agent (go figure...first time I've ever experienced that). After we had gone through all his many questions -- how far out of Anchorage do you live, what about the Iditarod, what about the auction of eligible males in ANC, etc. -- he asked me about Palin. I explained that I couldn't speak for all Alaskans, but many of us thought she was a nutcase. He went on to tell me that she had come through Customs sometime not long ago and played the diva role -- wouldn't speak to anyone, wouldn't take off her sunglasses, etc. Didn't sound like he was too impressed...

Note to $arah: THIS is what it looks like when someone is being honest and not scheming a way to distort things to their favor. It's an effect a sociopath cannot hope to achieve.
The funny/sad thing is that this just dredges up memories of all the arguments I had with right-wing friends who were actually defending the moron back in the day! I had the measure of her after that first interview with Charlie Gibson. She was an incompetent fraud play-acting the role of a viable candidate. It was so painfully obvious.
But like McCain's team, they just wanted so much for her to work, that they closed their eyes and minds and bought into the facade.
Don't like her, but you have admit. She can turn any subject around and make it about herself.

Schmidt went on to say that he came to realize that there are WORSE things than losing a campaign, that had they won, Palin would be DANGEROUS for the country that he loved.
Schmidt said that there should be a different process to pick a VP, it should be an open vetting to the public like any other presidential appointment.
When asked by Meeka if Palin might be a candidate now....
Schmidt was adamant, that Palin has done nothing to prepare or learn since the campaign, she has nothing to offer but old grievances and divisiveness for the country.

We in Alaska know how corrupt our government is and has been for years. Palin only added to it even though she professed otherwise. (The liar and fraud that she is and was!) Governor Parnell is no better than Palin and he knows far more about the oil industry than did she! The majority of us don't trust him at all! (Don't forget he was picked by Palin a few years ago and he was subsequently elected to his current positition even though I didn't vote for either of them!) Alaska government is a horrid mess! Thank God the Senate in the Alaska Legislature is blocking Parnell. He needs to be stopped and recalled.

(2) Wait for Rush Limbaugh to call you a slut and a prostitute on his radio, demand that in return for contraceptive coverage you post your sex tapes online so he can jerk off to them, and in general trash you up one side and down the other for three solid days as only the nastiest, foulest misogynist can do.
(3) Await your call from President Obama!
Oh, you don't want to do Step 1, and you doubt that Step 2 would ever fly, since your buddy Rush would ever call you a slut and a prostitute (as much as he probably does want to see YOUR sex tapes)?
