Funny or Die takes on the aborted Rick Santorum campaign. You're going to love this.
Thank you Funny or Die! We can't let these jerkasses go gently into that good night. We don't want to have to go through this again in another 48 months. LOL.
Love their acting skills. So talented. But I am actually shocked that they would compare "aborting" a campaign to aborting a fetus, whether or not it is a viable fetus. As a life-long pro-choice person who has terminated a pregnancy and has talked to and read about MANY others who have done the same, I have yet to find anyone able to joke about it, or compare it to as relatively unimportant an act as ending a campaign, which ended on its own more than by Santorum's choice.
My experience is that no one I have ever met is pro abortion. Staunchly pro-choice, yes; staunchly against the anti-choice philosophy, yes. But everyone I have ever heard of has thought this was the most excruciating of choices.
I know this piece is making fun of all the people who give unwanted advice, and who feel that unwanted advice should be given, on a very personal matter. However, Santorum's wish to be POTUS is in fact our business, and we do choose--we are supposed to choose--our leadership. In the case of aborting a fetus, it is no one's business except the woman's (and her conscience, ethics, morality, God -- but ultimately these are all interpreted by the woman involved, not someone else making the interpretation and choice for her).
The fact that Santorum might claim that he bowed out to care for his disabled daughter only makes this worse. That is in fact not really relevant, because he was losing so badly that he had no choice. His campaign actually died on its own, or was about to.
I think we do the pro-choice stance no favors by laughing about something that is a lifelong sadness for every woman I know who has had to make such a choice. Not a regretted choice, but always a sad one.
Usually, I can laugh about the most painful of things, but not this.
Get off the fucking soap box. . .who are you trying to impress? Are you going out of your way to get points with the fundies? It.won't.happen.
It wasn't an excruciating decision, it was a decision, period. And none of your fucking business as to whether or not it was moral or challenging or heartbreaking or whatnot.
There is no lifelong sadness, depression, guilt or regret. It's just something that happens to some people, in fact, a lot of people, but we don't go around rehashing and reliving it for the purposes of alleviating or influencing the decision-making of others.
Okay, technically you're right: if someone wishes to be POTUS in silence, it's no one else's business. But the moment he acts on it by becoming a candidate, it becomes our business. We can (and should) choose whether to vote for a candidate, write flatteringly or critically about him, support him (or not), etc.
But anti-choice folks have no business mandating what a woman's options are re her pregnancy -- her private medical condition.
As a woman, I'm offended by your supposition that "The fact that Santorum might claim that he bowed out to care for his disabled daughter only makes this worse." is a bold faced lie. He didn't use that as an excuse to bow out, and if he says it in the future, it doesn't change the fact that he bowed out.
She didn't get ill AFTER he BEGAN running, His choice to run was made knowing he had an ill child. He can use any excuse he wants, but I think it would be ingenuous to use his child's illness.
You know how Sarah Palin joked that she needed a wife? Could you imagine the loveless and exploited prison Sarah Palin's wife would have to endure in that indentured servitude?
A woman's response to her abortion surely is somewhere on a range from
Lifelong sadness <---> plop, not another thought.
The Howard Sterne example is at one end of that range. Studies show that few women fail to recall their abortions when they are v old, and their emotional response to that memory often finds them at the other end of the range from the H Sterne response. Probably each of us is in a different part of the range. I guess you, 11:44, and I are both a little offended by the other one's spot on that range. But that's life in the big city.
8:40 AM's comment proves that even so-called "pro-choice" people are judgmental and have a tenuous grasp on satire. This one managed to personalize even a satire aimed solely at one political wingnut and the "war on women".
Me? Yay, Ashley Judd, you "tiny Hollywood starlet*" with a strong sense of character and morality!
*Sarah Queen Esther's name for Ashley Judd in the aftermath of Judd's campaign to protect Alaskan wolves from Palin's aerial slaughter campaign.
Frankly I thought it was very funny. Rick Santorum deserved it. And I think that it's good to keep pointing out the absolute absurdity of the dirty-minded old white men in state legislatures who keep messing with women's lives. Aren't there any real issues for any of these states to tackle? Beaglemom
I am a conservative that doesn't agree with a lot of Santorum's views; I personally believe that a woman should have the right to choose what to do with her own body; however, the video wasn't funny, and beneath you, Ashley Judd. I really liked your new series, but won't be watching it again. I don't think novelists, actors or other entertainers should shove their politics in my face. It's enough that Communists in the government and all you liberals want to take away OUR right to free speech and to bear arms to protect ourselves in our own homes!!!!
You talk of free speech, yet Judd isn't allowed that same right? Aren't politics and voting, and being involved with issues one of our American rights?
ps here's a tissue, you started foaming at the mouth by the end of your comment.
Funny stuff. I suspect that the irony would go right over Ricky's head. And the rest if the evangelical morons' ad well.
ReplyDeleteThat was funny and perfect, thanks Gryphen !

DeleteYou really, really missed the point. On so many levels.
For one, "Santorum's wish to be POTUS" is NOT our business. It's his choice to run, not ours. We, on the other hand, can CHOOSE not to vote for him.

It's satire.

Huntsman blasts the Republican line-up. (said his wife threatened to leave him, if he signed up with their nonsense :-)

O/T but when I saw the poster I thought you might appreciate it (but you may have already seen it) - either way it was too good to not share
ReplyDeleteHomoPhobia - the fear that gay men are going to treat you the way you treat women and that a lesbian will treat your woman better than you do.
Excellent.
DeleteYou know how Sarah Palin joked that she needed a wife? Could you imagine the loveless and exploited prison Sarah Palin's wife would have to endure in that indentured servitude?
DeleteI like it!
DeleteI saw one that said "My Mom made me a Lesbian, if you buy the yarn, she'll make you one, too!"
Anon@8:40--I am sorry for your pain. You very eloquently expressed the feelings of so many, many people.
ReplyDeleteNope. She's doing the pro-choice movement no favors in enforcing that meme that it is a life-long crippling decision women make.
DeleteDo we have to put ourselves on the cross in order to be forgiven the right to practice our legally protected rights and want to plan our families?
Safe and rare sure, but don't give us this grief/suffering/mourning stuff as if it's a prerequisite.

Here here. Remember how Howard Stern joked about flushing his wife's miscarried baby down a toilet on radio?
DeleteTHAT was a horrifying and tasteless joke, not this video.
And Ashley totally put her 'talent' on display for Sarah's faux ire.
with santorum's rants on abortion this is kind of like karma coming back to kick him in the tushie.

Karma's a bitch ain't it Ricky.... The best advise? VANISH.....

So only conservatives should have the right of free speech?

Now THAT was good! Do your civic duty, Google Santorum, Google often ;o)
ReplyDeleteIt'll probably go right over his supporter's heads, irony isn't their forte' - they're too busy filling their quivers.

Amen!, someone had to say it!, how DARE they shove their politics in your face!!!!! It's Unamerican! off with their heads!
