-- Documents released by the FBI show that a source told investigators that an Alaska congressman and his late wife spent campaign money on hunting trips and flights and wrote checks to themselves over years of allegedly profligate spending on his contributors' dime.
The allegations were not enough to convince the FBI that they could convict Rep. Don Young and the matter was dropped in 2010.
The documents were released Friday, more than three months after a federal judge rejected the Justice Department's refusal to turn over records of its criminal investigation.
The source, whose identify was redacted in the documents, appeared to have intimate knowledge of Young's D.C. office and was familiar with Young and his wife's conduct during fundraising trips.
Congress asked the Justice Department in 2008 to investigate Young's role in securing a $10 million earmark to widen a Florida highway.
The project would have benefited a developer who helped raise money for Young. The congressman was re-elected to a 20th term in 2010.
Young's press secretary, Luke Miller, said Saturday that the matter should be considered closed.
"First and foremost, Congressman Young is not under investigation and any assertion that he is, is utterly false," Miller said. "The reckless accusations made yesterday are part of a larger effort to smear the Congressman.
"Congressman Young has cooperated with the investigative process every step of the way and nothing was found. Simply put – it's time to move on."
The idea that "Congressman Young has cooperated with the investigative process every step of the way" is laugh out loud funny, but the sad fact is that, due to Don Young's seemingly invulnerability to criminal prosecution, many Alaska political activists HAVE moved on.
You would be hard pressed to find ANYBODY in Alaska who would not admit that they think Don Young is corrupt. And that goes for supporters as well.
However you would also be hard pressed to find anybody who thinks Don Young will either be defeated in an election or convicted for his numerous crimes. Ain't gonna happen.
In 2008 I was actually among those who firmly believed that we were at the cusp of an incredible overhaul of Alaska's corrupt election system, and that, with all of the energy and participation inspired by BOTH Barack Obama and Sarah Palin, Alaskans were finally ready to "throw the bums out."
I watched the election returns that night at election headquarters downtown and was beyond excited to see Young trailing Ethan Berkowitz by a substantial margin early on. Suddenly right before our eyes the newer numbers started coming in from polling places that rely heavily on the Diebold electronic voting machines and by a large margin they started to favor Young. By the end of the night Young was ahead of Ethan by only a few percentage points. However later there suddenly appeared this huge unexpected number of absentee ballots, and by the end Young retained his seat.
It was the clearest case of voter fraud that I had ever witnessed. However when push came to shove, Ethan Berkowitz conceded, and today Don Young remains our "Congressman for life."
It was a very hard lesson to learn, in that it makes NO difference who the voters want, because until the GOP (And their oil company masters) release their death grip on Alaska politics the people's choice will never attain office in this state. Literally the ONLY reason that Mark Begich was able to defeat Ted Stevens is because he had become an embarrassment to the powers that be in Alaska and they allowed him to be removed.
And as for the FBI? Well my sources tell me that have NO plans to go after Don Young, pretty much ever. ESPECIALLY after the debacle of the Ted Stevens corruption trial.
When members of the Alaska Republicans referred to themselves as "The Corrupt Bastards Club," it was not some tongue in cheek reference to how their political enemies viewed them. It was an arrogant display of how positive they were that they were too powerful and well connected to ever be punished for their crimes.
And in the end, at least in the case of Congressman Don Young and Ted's son Ben Stevens, that arrogance proved to be well deserved.
Which explains how Sara, with toads help, remains a viable force in the US. She has some very deep pockets behind her and I'm sure enjoys a good laugh whenever people think they are close to exposing her. She makes a call or two and just like that the mainstream media shuts down and she dances away unhurt. It is her pathology that will be her downfall because she appears unable to poke the monster with her sharp stick - perhaps she has enough photos of prominent people astride underage girls or she just doesn't know any better. At some point they'll tire of her - unlike Young she has no political post - and she will continue into aging despite her botox, wigs and rubber boobs. They'll find a new one to ogle who will willingly carry their message and she'll get tossed aside.
ReplyDeleteIt might not be $arah who has anything on them, but Toad - remember, he asked that Shailey keep a detailed record for him of what all those people he sent to Shailey 'like'...
DeleteMaybe the msm is complicit?
DeleteI am so sorry that corrupt bastards are NOT prosecuted and found guilty. It would be such a great thing for our country to throw out these people and replace them with people who actually care about America and its people. What a great example it would be to throw them in jail where they belong.
ReplyDeleteIt is a sad commentary on the state of the country that these people not only get away with their illegal activities, but that they also rub our faces in it.
We are no better (rather, we are even WORSE!) than any of those 'corrupt' countries we decry daily in our MSM!
DeleteThis just goes to show. There are NO politicians in American history who are free from corruption. NONE. Especially at the national level. Biden admitted he chose the senate because he didn't want to work a real job, like being a mayor.
ReplyDeleteStupid politics. I say we find the closest thing to a true blue native American and put em in office. This country was founded on greed, slaughter and corruption. Let's take it back to the good ol days where politicians weren't respected or given power over any other person.
That's ridiculous about Biden -- he was elected just after he turned 30. His wife and daughter were killed in an automobile crash shopping for a Christmas tree before he was sworn in -- he was sworn in in his son's hospital room (they were injured in the crash). He commuted from Wilmington to Washington every single day -- three hours' round-trip every single day-- so he could be home with his sons at night.
DeleteHe was chairman of the Judiciary Committee, among other very responsible and difficult jobs from 1973-2009.
Some mayoral jobs are difficult -- in cities of many hundreds of thousands or millions of people, with thousands of firemen, policemen, teachers, sanitation men, and others all working for you. There's no such mayoral job in Delaware. If you want to do anything in politics there, you're either one of two Senators, the Congressman, or the Governor.
"Mayor" of Wasilla, however, was easier than being the superintendent of a school district, with less responsibility, fewer constuents and fewer employers.
And, as an extension, that's why a contest for Vice President between Joe Biden, college graduate, law school graduate, and U.S. Senator for 36 years vs. unschooled, untrained, unintelligent Sarah Palin was no contest at all.
DeleteJoe O'Biden wouldn't even have hired her as a secretary in one of his smaller district offices. Even his second wife has a Ph.D.
I think Todd Palin scraped through high school, or so they say. This doesn't make the Bidens "elite," it just makes them very smart, and intelligent, sophisticated and experienced.
Biden was obviously joking when he said that.
DeleteAre you working for $arah Palin? She and Don Young are two of the most corrupt.
If all politicians are corrupt, what happens to your "true blue native" American when you elect them? They become corrupt afterwards, according to your own theory.
When you say "native American", are your referring to the many native tribes that live here before the rape and slaughter of the white man's burden?
Your argument is specious and absurd
Until real election election reform gets accomplished there is not much hope. I believe President Obama won by a much higher margin and so it was too risky to tweak the results.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the post 100%. Right on the money. Pun intended.
ReplyDeleteThe only way these people will ever get their just deserts is if some huge scandal erupts which entangles too many people and has too many ramifications for it to be swept under the rug.
The Secret Service prostitution issue is one such type of far-reaching scandal that has the power to blow the lid off the corruption in Alaska. I have no doubt that the SS people involved in Alaska, with SP, etc., were also involved in this. This scandal goes far, far beyond Columbia. All you have to do is go up to Nome and turn over a few rocks.
But, it's never easy dislodging, and removing cleanly, dug in ticks and leeches once they've established a feeding spot.
Alaska sucks.....nuff said!
ReplyDeleteDIEBOLD again - How I HATE that company!
ReplyDeleteFor the life of me, I do not understand why the Democrats have not gotten rid of those voting machines - I mean, it has over and over been shown how easily they can be manipulated, and the CEO even said years ago that Diebold would make sure that gwb (sic) would win.
Why didn't the Dems and President Obama make it their NUMBER ONE 'must-do' when they got into power and had the absolute power?
Diebold is what will sink President Obama this November - mark my words!
BS. They did not sink him in 2008.
DeleteThe President does not have absolute power. Stop putting every problem in the country on his shoulders.
DeleteThe decision about which voting machines to use is done on a state or local level. Many of those jurisdictions are in GOP hands so they get to choose the equipment. The President has no authority to tell them which voting machines to purchase and use.
DeleteDiebold has a lot of money invested in the people who make these kinds of decisions. The company produces machines that can be manipulated to produce the desired results and the people who win those elections keep paying money to the company AND squashing any election fraud investigations before they can gather steam. It's a corrupt, co-dependent and self-perpetuating system that is nearly impossible to break.
And there's nothing the President can do about it.
How about he brings the state Federal money just like Steven's did and no one cares...
ReplyDeletePeople get the government they deserve.
ReplyDeleteJust stopped by for a visit. Can't stay long. Have to get back to my thesis. Just couldn't help thinking of "she who shall not be named" when I found this quote during my research.
ReplyDelete“A point of view can be a dangerous luxury when substituted for insight and
understanding.”
―Marshall McLuhan, The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man
Thanks for the wonderful Marshall McLuhan. I haven't read that book since my (late in life) grad school in the 90's. How I wish we had McLuhan--or his political equivalent--to interrupt Mrs. Palin's deluded truths and correct her a la Annie Hall!
DeletePalin does the same thing with her PAC money, but the donors are too dumb to care .
ReplyDeleteO/T:
ReplyDeleteAnother 'rill Americun Teaparty fanatic decide to show his high school welding class how to stand their ground.
He lines the kids up against the wall, pulls out a gun, and fires blanks at them!!!!!!
If this asshole doesn't lose his job and pension over this, there is no justice in this world.

I love how the reporters say "No students were hurt". Maybe they weren't physically hurt, but I would imagine being lined up against a garage door, having a gun pointed your way, and fearing for your life WOULD hurt anyone.
DeleteThis scum is a vile excuse for a human being, and doesn't deserve the honor of being called "teacher". I hope he loses more than his job and pension. I hope their parents sue him for every penny he owns.
It was obviously pre meditated torture, since he borrowed the gun from another teacher in a different school district.
You are discussing Alaska politicians, etc. Sarah is not free from the lower 48. She still has to explain all her personal finances and Pac expenditures, etc. I doubt there is anyone down here who Toad has reigns on. She wanted to play down here, she has to play by the rules. The IRS and FEC are way more powerful than Toads friends, etc. in Alaska.
ReplyDeleteI became familiar to ak politics when stevens insisted on receiving a piece of the pork belly pie right at the beginning of the recession. his state didn't need it and other states did. I believe the money he wanted was to paint salmons on ak's aircrafts. I was wtf, man?
ReplyDeleteNext thing his son did hanky-panky stealing from the Special Olympics. Come on now, I thought.
Then !crash! the insufferable bitch sarah plus her dysfunctional hillbilly, foul mouth, dumbass family come a chomping.
AK! Please no more. Please gotdamnit!
Sidenote: Al Capone doesn't have shit on ak's corruption.
This post is too sad and I grieve for Alaskans. However, I need to point out the Diebold disaster in Alaska wasn't a case of "voter fraud." Rather, it was a case of "election fraud." The voters weren't being fraudulent but the vote counters surely were.
ReplyDeleteDoes any one wanna bet that cruise ship that cruised into ak and was met by dizzycups sarah has something to do with the prostitution ring?
ReplyDeleteThe time she did everything and everything to get noticed?
game of life. I agree. I've lived where Presidents have homes. When they come to town working girls go to work full time, over time. None of the Secret Service stuff is new. CEOs, political types, all the entourages and anyone that wants those services can choose from a smorgasbord. If they come to town often they have girls or boys on a retainer. It is part of the package. It is just that it is a secret and anyone who violates that trust is a rat or worse. It is business and you don't cross the bosses.
ReplyDeleteThe problem in Colombia is it is legal and the worker didn't have a problem standing up for herself.
Alaskan politics is so corrupt it makes me want to barf! We have been for years and continue to be. Palin is one of the worst! Young has been for eons and the majority in Alaska didn't even have a clue. We are a red state and it is more than time that we turn blue and get rid of the asshole Republicans. Parnell especially! Make sure we go to the polls in November and change our state back to the blue it was many years ago!
