Okay I take it back. Apparently Ann Romney DID have to face tough choices.
Wow, she really does share the same concerns and difficulties that face today's women.
WWAD? What would Ann Do? She is a woman of our time! Go, Ann! Really. Go.
Do I buy milk, or feminine protection? (I had to make this choice not that long ago. FP won out and the kids were happy with Kool-Aid for a week, but still. . .)
You people have no idea the stress involved in shipping your 3 million dollar dressage horse across the country at the same time as making sure the household staff has everything ready for your arrival. Little Rabbit
How to manage those children and put the time in saddle to compete. I have a lot of respect for Anne Romney and her connection to horses. But I agree with Rosen, she had no idea what most women experience. As a kid in the '60-'70s I was so lucky to have a single-parent mom with four kids that knew how important horses were to me. And for $6 a week for lessons she got a very grateful kid that didn't complain about chores, kept good grades, and stayed out of trouble. She struggled to scrape it together but I think she figured it was a great investment.
Besides a full house staff, I'm sure she has grooms, trainers, transporters, and lackeys to clean stalls. I seriously doubt that she has EVER saddled her own horse. When I was younger, I was a rider/groom at a Coto de Caza Country Club in California. Our clientele included John Wayne, Linda Irvine, and many other extremely wealthy people. Most were very nice, especially Linda Irvine (Gaede), but believe me, they never saddled their own horses or even warmed them up or cooled them down.
Ann Romney's life has been so privileged that she can't possibly know what it is like for the rest of us, especially those of us who worked, raised kids, and struggled because of divorce. How can she possibly be a resource for her husband on economics and women's issues? Give me a break, please.
Making non-alcoholic Highballs and ordering the maids to pick up after the boys, the nannies to nurse them, the chefs to cook, and the illegals to mow her palatial estates is HARD WORK!
Perhaps, but when the majority of us finish fighting our inner battles, we do not have the luxury of pampering ourselves with caviar facials, a kitchen staff to make our favorite comfort food, and trips up in down in our car elevators while sitting in one of our Cadillacs.
Oh, I don't know, deciding whether to buy food or pay rent, trying to figure out whether it is worth it to get a job with the cost of transportation and day care, trying to juggle 2 or even 3 jobs and still spend time with the family might be just a WEE bit tougher than telling the help what to fix the kids for breakfast. Don't even fucking suggest I am not being nice. You obviously have NEVER had to deal with anything remotely as stressful as 60% of the women in this country have dealt with.
Her husband has done a nice job of greasing the skids for her, so that her inner struggles don't slow her down too much. Even dealing with MS isn't the same for her. She participates in an elitist sport while a friend of mine can't afford the medicine to control her MS. She has to do the best she can with diet. How sad is that?
Then please practice what you preach and stop stirring up trouble. The topic here is that while Ann Romney may have serious medical issues, she can well afford the very best treatment, health insurance or no health insurance. She claims that riding hundred thousand dollar horses gives her "purpose in life." The riding outfits, the competitions and training, the horses and stables cost a fortune. Even Mitt doesn't know how much. Michelle Obama's father also had MS, but on his city worker salary and insurance plan, he remained in a wheel chair, and he didn't have any horses to relieve his worry and stress.
Ann Romney lives a life of luxury. With full time help, she could do the things that many people dream of, going back to school, have time to read books and be part of a book club, give generously to charities. In fact, Ann has had a very good response to her MS treatment. Does she raise money for MS research? Does she lecture or organize fund raisers? Is she on national committees to raise awareness so that others can learn and benefit from her healthy life style? She certainly doesn't have to worry about getting the kids off to school, making lunches, getting groceries for diner, making dinner and cleaning up the dishes.
There are more and more women who MUST contribute to the household economy, and they must work as well as raise children, take care of the home, worry about paying bills and meeting unexpected expenses. Any of them would love to have a full time maid to share some of the domestic load. They do not have the luxury of Ann's multi-million dollar lifestyle.
Let me explain it for you. Dumb Ass Hilary chose her words poorly and has now allowed the Repugnants to pretend that liberals are the ones engaging in the war on women by criticizing a stay-at-home mom. Yes, yes, we all know that Hilary meant that Ann hadn't worked outside the home and had no clue what that was like for women in a man's world. The progressives and Obama are merely trying to exert damage control.
Actually there should be no need for "damage control" by the Democrats. Hilary Rosen is not part of the Administration. I think the President and Mrs. Obama were being nice. I think they also know that the Republicans took a snippet of what Hilary Rosen said and ignored the rest of her statement. That's what Republicans do - distort reality and lie - and then expand their lie to include the president. The Obamas are used to it; they were concerned that Hilary Rosen might not be. Personally I agree with every word of Hilary Rosen's statement.
Yes, and keeping track of which city your husband is in when (I mean, what has the man been actually doing since he lost this race in 2008???) is really tough. It's not jealousy when people react to a presidential candidate who can't answer a question about women's issues, then passes it on to his wealthy wife who's only dilemna is choosing which China to set out for dinner.
It's not about anyone's ability or sacrifice in raising sons and daughters; it's about families' inability to keep more of their paycheck, affordable health care, and manage to save for their children's futures that Rosen was frustrated at. But the Romney campaign wants to claim VICTIM - don't hate us because we're rich. This is really going to hurt the campaign.
I thought Romney said he speaks with his wife who has talked with women during the campaign. I may have misread what he said but I took it that Mrs. Romney spoke of what women told her.
Look at the comparison. Michele Bachmann had 23 foster girls living with them (and was probably paid by the state for their care) vs. Ann Romney who must have actually paid a salary to her household help. Someone mentioned that they had very low paid housekeepers, maybe one living in each of their houses. However, just because the maid received a salary well below the minimum wage doesn't mean that was all that she got. She could have received generous cash bonuses (shhh, don't tell anyone, and you won't have to pay taxes, in fact, please don't tell anyone and you'll get a nice birthday present, too).
Why is the media allowed to twist the context of any statement that might have a scintilla of truth? We are living in Bizzaro world and it seems like there is no escape. I would like to think that the occupy movement is only the tip of the upcoming iceburg. I believe we (like minded individuals, being driven crazy) by this relentless bullshit, will , at some point devise a plan, means, method, to push the pendulem into a intelligent discourse. The Republican outrage is about as real and important as Sarah Palin demanding that President Obama call her and apologize for Bill Maher calling her a dirty name.
The problem that the Romneys have is that they are rich rich rich. They have a number of homes, elevators for their cars, horses for Ann to ride. That means that they have help, stables, and did I mention that those houses cost millions and millions of dollars, too. Ann doesn't have to look at a price tag or ask if the insurance plan covers her new medication.
There are women who are Ann Romney rich and do other things with their lives. For years, Oprah had a successful TV show and she inspired many viewers. She donated money to fund a school for girls in South Africa. Cindy McCain worked for and donated to a Mother Theresa charity in India. There are women who have gone to school, worked hard at their careers and raised a family, and yes, also had illness and hardship in their lives. Ann is lucky to have money enough to provide an easy life. There are millions of people who would love to trade places with her. They have to work, worry and make ends meet. Ann can't blow them off with a "every woman works hard" quip.
The problem that Mitt has is that he appears out of touch with ordinary people. He just can't relate to them, and now we see that his wife follows his example. His kids did not go into the military. Mitt said that they served their country by working on his election campaign. At a Republican luncheon, Ann did not want to eat the standard chicken or beef, instead asking the chef to make a special chicken Caesar salad for her, "to go." Ann ate it in the care with a staff member. It is beyond rude to be invited to a Republican luncheon where Ann probably gave a speech, asking those people to vote for her husband. The least that she could do is accept their hospitality and sit at the lunch table with them. If she didn't like the meal, she could pretend to eat it and eat something later. She said that the salad was healthier for her, but the real issue is that Ann didn't eat with the other Republicans. That's snobbish. And, it is what all the money, houses, horses and maids are all about. Ann is not like other women who have to hold down a job and take care of a family, worrying about bills and whether they can afford a special school or medicine if the kid needs it. Ann has never had those worries in her life.

Yeah, it's very interesting to compare Ann Romney to Jill Biden. Jill was married to the poorest man in the senate, worked and earned her PhD, and raised two stepsons and a daughter. One of her children - Beau Biden -- honorably served in the military and deployed to Iraq.
Ann's five sons never served -- I guess it would be hard to serve in the military after you have been raised in mansions with servants and horses. Or Ann, when she was working so hard being a mom, forgot to instill any patriotism in her five sons. Did instill plenty of privilege though.
If Mitt thinks Ann is his secret weapon, then I guess the women of America have to show him otherwise.
I cried at the Democratic Vice Presidential debate when Sarah Palin tried to play the mom card and Joe countered by speakinge about how she wasn't the only one who faced challenges in life and the challenge he faced in losing his young wife and becoming a single parent to very young boys.
Would love Beau to campaign for his dad and the ticket. Now that's a family the 99% can relate to.
Sarah barely even blinked at that. She was so focused on her talking points, she couldn't break out of them to show even the smallest amount of humanity.
I do not want a President who thinks stashing his money in offshore accounts is good. He should pay his fair share of taxes, then he could reveal his tax returns, instead of hedging the way he is. If he is elected, taxpayers will be stuck paying Secret Service protection for the entire family, plus all their homes. This country can not AFFORD the Romneys. I wonder why the gop attracts all the low lifes, tax dodgers, adulterers, religious freaks?

On Wednesday night, CNN contributor and Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen created what has to be the greatest media mountain-to-molehill ratio in recent memory, simply by telling the truth. For her trouble, she has been gay-bashed by the Catholic League, become the Republican Party’s bloody shirt in defense of the War On Women (the existence of which Rosen, ironically, denies), and been excoriated by the very highest officials on her own political side. While many agree this is stupid, Republican overplaying of this hand could, and should, backfire on them.
As a REAL stay home mom, I'm laughing hysterically at that.

I would like to think that the occupy movement is only the tip of the upcoming iceburg. I believe we (like minded individuals, being driven crazy) by this relentless bullshit, will , at some point devise a plan, means, method, to push the pendulem into a intelligent discourse. The Republican outrage is about as real and important as Sarah Palin demanding that President Obama call her and apologize for Bill Maher calling her a dirty name.
ReplyDeleteThe problem that the Romneys have is that they are rich rich rich. They have a number of homes, elevators for their cars, horses for Ann to ride. That means that they have help, stables, and did I mention that those houses cost millions and millions of dollars, too. Ann doesn't have to look at a price tag or ask if the insurance plan covers her new medication.
There are women who are Ann Romney rich and do other things with their lives. For years, Oprah had a successful TV show and she inspired many viewers. She donated money to fund a school for girls in South Africa. Cindy McCain worked for and donated to a Mother Theresa charity in India. There are women who have gone to school, worked hard at their careers and raised a family, and yes, also had illness and hardship in their lives. Ann is lucky to have money enough to provide an easy life. There are millions of people who would love to trade places with her. They have to work, worry and make ends meet. Ann can't blow them off with a "every woman works hard" quip.
The problem that Mitt has is that he appears out of touch with ordinary people. He just can't relate to them, and now we see that his wife follows his example. His kids did not go into the military. Mitt said that they served their country by working on his election campaign. At a Republican luncheon, Ann did not want to eat the standard chicken or beef, instead asking the chef to make a special chicken Caesar salad for her, "to go." Ann ate it in the care with a staff member. It is beyond rude to be invited to a Republican luncheon where Ann probably gave a speech, asking those people to vote for her husband. The least that she could do is accept their hospitality and sit at the lunch table with them. If she didn't like the meal, she could pretend to eat it and eat something later. She said that the salad was healthier for her, but the real issue is that Ann didn't eat with the other Republicans. That's snobbish. And, it is what all the money, houses, horses and maids are all about. Ann is not like other women who have to hold down a job and take care of a family, worrying about bills and whether they can afford a special school or medicine if the kid needs it. Ann has never had those worries in her life.
Ot and I know your post is coming but the Palin/Bolling spectical was just that. Dumb and dumber, I swear to god!

Yeah, it's very interesting to compare Ann Romney to Jill Biden. Jill was married to the poorest man in the senate, worked and earned her PhD, and raised two stepsons and a daughter. One of her children - Beau Biden -- honorably served in the military and deployed to Iraq.

If Mitt thinks Ann is his secret weapon, then I guess the women of America have to show him otherwise.
I cried at the Democratic Vice Presidential debate when Sarah Palin tried to play the mom card and Joe countered by speakinge about how she wasn't the only one who faced challenges in life and the challenge he faced in losing his young wife and becoming a single parent to very young boys.
Would love Beau to campaign for his dad and the ticket. Now that's a family the 99% can relate to.

DeleteI do not want a President who thinks stashing his money in offshore accounts is good. He should pay his fair share of taxes, then he could reveal his tax returns, instead of hedging the way he is. If he is elected, taxpayers will be stuck paying Secret Service protection for the entire family, plus all their homes. This country can not AFFORD the Romneys. I wonder why the gop attracts all the low lifes, tax dodgers, adulterers, religious freaks?

DeleteI remember a right winger gleefully telling me about the John Edwards scandal. I told him I was pretty sure that many Republican men also cheat on their wives. Newt Gringrich comes immediately to mind, although I guess Calista was either using birth control like a bad Catholic or infertile, so there was no love child during their long affair before Newt dumped wife number 2 for wife number 3.

For her trouble, she has been gay-bashed by the Catholic League, become the Republican Party’s bloody shirt in defense of the War On Women (the existence of which Rosen, ironically, denies), and been excoriated by the very highest officials on her own political side. While many agree this is stupid, Republican overplaying of this hand could, and should, backfire on them.
