The number of radical hate groups and militias has exploded in recent years in reaction to the changing makeup of America, and new census figures showing the majority of babies born in 2011 were non-white could fuel those simmering tensions, experts who track hate groups warned.
"White supremacist groups have been having a meltdown since the census bureau predicted that non-Hispanic whites would lose the majority by 2050," said Mark Potok, spokesman for the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups. "The demographic change in this country is the single most important driver in the growth of hate groups and extremist groups over the last few years."
And of course the visual representation of everything these racists despise is piped into their living rooms on a daily basis.
For white supremacist and radical right-wing groups, the data is especially troubling, and made all the more apparent by the fact that a black man was elected president, Potok said.
"This very real and very significant change is represented in the person of Barack Obama. We've of course seen the most remarkable growth in the radical right since 2008, precisely coinciding with Obama's first three years as president," he said.
Is it any wonder that the GOP has revisited the Reverend Wright, "angry black, hating on whitey, preacher" meme? Or why there is so much interest in finding someway to reopen the birther controversy?
THEY know where the passion for beating this President lies. NOT with the middle class whose jobs are starting to come back, or the young people who are engaged over issues like gay marriage. No THEIR prime demographic are the people who hate Obama simply for the color of his skin, and who need NO other reason to send their hard earned money to any man who runs against him, regardless of how batshit crazy they consider his religious beliefs.
"That Romney may only be the cardboard cutout of a cult follower who believes he will get his own planet when he dies, but he is a cardboard cutout of a cult follower who believes he will get his own planet when he dies, with the correct pigment in his damn skin!"
Personally I believe this may be the last Presidential election that will be tinged with such racial discord that America will ever see, regardless of when the next Hispanic, Asian, or African American gets a place on the ballot, but this one is going to be ass deep in racial anger and hateful rhetoric and we might just as well accept that as inevitable.
The entire Republican Party has become a hate group.
ReplyDeleteSmash them.
Smash them? Wow, you sound like a crazy, right wing, hate filled Republican yourself. Smash them...really?
DeleteHas Willard committed treason at the NATO summit? Why would he say what he has said? It is totally un-American and unjustifiable under any circumstances. He is one SICKO!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/05/18/romney-tells-nato-leaders-hed-be-a-better-partner/
What a nut job! He undermines the POTUS's upcoming meeting with NATO?!?!?!?
DeleteWTF is wrong with this idiot, who's going to pay for his proposal, and what's his agenda?
As if Hillary Clinton doesn't have enough on her plate, now she has to clean up after this moron's treason rant.
You're right, Mitt's crossed a line with this one!
This is why I support the Southern Poverty Law Center. They are a watch dog organization that identifies the many different "hate" groups around the country and have a map of the US showing where the various groups are located. I was dismayed to see so many here in Michigan. But the ugliness and vileness is all around us. One would think that such a "Christian" nation would not be like this! Maybe the real problem is that we do not teach history well enough. That and the "faux Christianity" that is preached from too many pulpits on Sundays. Hmmm.

Sad, but (I fear) oh so very true. I live in a small town, and every day Ii listen to people trying to articulate what it is they don't like about the President. It's never policy, or politicis - it always devolves into how he's "different, not like us, doesn't see the world like we do" or some other tiptoe variation around the word they really want to use.... "black.". This is usually followed by a ramble through "Christian principles and values" and of course our old friend "taking the country back."
ReplyDeleteSomedays it"s enough to make me kind of hope the Mayans got that "end of the world in 2012" thing right
This makes Bristol the baby maker a heroine in some cirlcles. Mama Grizzle has all the right stuff and they down play Todd and the Eskimo bloodline when they don't need that credential. These kooks worship breeding for whites and now it is as close to white as they can get. Out of control baby making works for them.
ReplyDeleteSarah and Todd's children are mixed race (except maybe Track). The Palins would be part of the "problem," according to these neo-nazi a-holes.
DeleteI have been a supporter of the Southern Poverty Law Center for a long time. They do amazing work for the good of all, and their workload is ever increasing.
ReplyDeleteSPLC also sponsors the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama. If any of the readers here have an opportunity to see it, please do! Be prepared though, to add your own tears to the flowing waters built into the design by Maya Lin, the young architect who also designed the Vietnam Memorial in Washington.
It may be of interest to teachers reading this blog, that the SPLC has educational "Teaching Tolerance" materials for schools.

Great suggestion, there's something profoundly sacred/humbling in experiencing the memorial, What I loved the best was taking the pledge and adding my name to the "Wall of Tolerance". My whole family was moved to tears.
DeleteI can still recall how eager certain white folks were so aghast when South Africa went through its racial conflict - we're next.

Not to mention that study after study after study has proven that Saving It For Jesus classes don't work.
Speaking of saving it for Jesus, I read an article about a person who posed as a neighborhood watchman and earned the trust of a woman who then raped her.

ReplyDeleteYikes, where do I start... Just as well, let's just go straight to the close... Although I truly hope you're right about this being the last American election where we'll see this level (and expect more to come) of racial bias and bigotry. I also believe in the earth only being 5,000 years old..
Being born and raised in the DEEP south and being FORCED to attend secret meetings EXACTLY LIKE the picture at the top of your post, and also having tried to go back (temporarily) to take care of a family member, I left again - FOR GOOD. I left the south 44 years ago for 5 VERY SPECIFIC reasons. When I went back after living all over the world, those 5 specific things had not only REMAINED EXACTLY the same - they actually GOT WORSE. One of the specific's was the openly and blatant display of raw racism against everything NON-WHITE is abysmal.... It's gotten worse by orders of magnitude.
Your premise about this being the last election infiltrated and driven by racism is not correct... Even the generations, that we've believed for decades have only to die off was enough to force this racism out, won't work. They just keep pounding it into the next generations - hourly.... It's awful to watch... I rejected it publicly and even to my family, so those of you still there, get out if you can, if you stay and you aren't a good-ole-boy - they'll come for you...
IF you're just a good-ole-boy and think I'm just a rambling, stupid yankee aggravator, great.... have fun...
Yes racism is passed down generation to generation. This is what can't get rid of it.
ReplyDeleteThis is WHY the radical right wing is "pro life", this is why idiots like Santorum, Romney, et al wage the "war against Women", this is why Sarah uses her kids as human shields, includes the "white out" narrative in her "Fairy Tale" books and holds Brisol on the pedestal of worship for "choosing life".
ReplyDeleteThis is why "hate speech and symbolism" are excused and condoned.
This is why there are people shooting at the White House and why President Obama's received seven times the death treats of any other president.
The SPLC is an amazing organization that keeps track of these groups. I've traveled through the south, don't get me wrong, there ARE good people there, but many are still fighting the civil war and pining over the "good old days" when slavery was the norm.
This crap makes my blood boil. I know education is key, but it can only go so far when parents teach children to hate others, for any reason.
Sadly, I doubt racism will ever be eradicated.
Melissa Harris Perry had a great show about Rev Wright and racism this morning.
