Chris Matthews slams corporations for sitting on their money to make the President look bad.

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

As I have mentioned in the past I don't always watch Hardball, and often disagree with Matthews on a whole slew of issues, but watching him confront former Bush official Tony Fratto, and call out big business for helping to sabotage the economy to benefit the GOP was quite satisfying because I think most of us KNOW that's what's going on here.

The action starts around the 3:40 mark.

  1. Matthews is spot on. Most of the economic indicators are going upward except for employment numbers (which have stalled). Business is too busy giving itself millions in bonuses or spending millions on buying politicians too actually spend money employing people so that the people will have confidence to spend. Business and the GOP are sabotaging the economy just to make Obama look bad.

Yeah, the 'job creators' who are supposed to be so bold and not dithering, have been sitting on their thumbs, telling news outlets and conservative politicians and astro-turf groups that they are so 'uncertain' about the economy that they can't bare to create jobs. . .

They had at least 5 years of Bush tax breaks to be creatin all that time before Obama came along. But very much like the Republican Party the day Obama was sworn in, where Limbaugh leaked it, they wanted him to fail, so their obstructionism, wasting time on abortion issues, and withholding corporate spending unless it was through a SUPERPAC is so very obvious.

For the life of me. I don't understand why Americans choose their president according to how man job are created. When it is not the president who is responsible for creating jobs, and hiring.

Yeah -- and I don't understand why people can't get through their thick heads that:

      A. The economy was worse than was thought.
      B. The economy's recovery was hampered by the global nature of the recession. Generally, when the US was in the situation we were in in 2009, another country would have swooped in and made some investments but that couldn't happen because EVERYONE was affected.
      C. Our comeback was further hampered by the European debt crisis -- which has NOTHING to do with Obama.
      D. As soon as the GOP won governorships, they laid off massive numbers of public employees...which is counter to what every economists in the world would want.

Well, safe to say Matthews will never be offered a job at Fox!!! It is long past time that some of these political "pundints" started saying what is on their minds. The TRUTH is so obvious to any thinking person, yet the gop spells it out for us. McConnell said "My main priority is seeing that Obama is a one term president" So, rather than do what they were elected to do (represent their constituents) they block any measure to set the country back on track. Yhe gop is the party of slow thinkers, Palin is a prime example of that. Democrats would NEVER have given her a microphone to spew her hatred. McCain should rot in hell for inflicting HER on the country. I hope Matthews keeps this up, and that it spreads to others.

I wish the MSM would look into this. If the Koch brothers and others are pledging $100 million to make sure the president loses, dontcha think they'll want to protect their investment as best they can, by stopping any new hiring????

On the news yesterday, reporters were talking about how businesses might have laid off more people than they needed at the height of the recession and are slow to get back to hiring because they've found that they have been able to make do...which they've been saying for TWO YEARS now...something is definitely fishy!

Bottom line - customers buying from businesses effect the number of people hired or let go!!!!

I can't believe the story about Romney impersonating a police officer didn't get mainstream media coverage - and at least half of the comments on Huffingtonpost and acting like it was no big deal, or too long ago to be of any importance.

How about the fact that 3 of Romney's staffers being charged with impersonating a police officer?

ANyone remembers that Romney's aide from the campaign in 2007 was arrested for impersonating a police officer? http://www.bostonherald.com/news/national/politics/view.bg?articleid=1012402

seems that the fake cop thing really was a fetish with Romney

I watched Chris and it was a beautiful thing to witness! While waiting for PBO remarks, the gop pundit tried to spew right wing talking points and thought he was going to get away with it when Chris came down on him with the truth & didn't let him interrupt even though he kept trying to interrupt Chris. I've noticed that a few like Tamaryn Hall (spelling of her name?)are standing up to the gop liars! It's got to be difficult for anyone with integrtiy to hold the corporate line of neg. coverage of PBO!

I find it ironic that the very big businesses that are doing so well under this president look at him in an adversarial light. That's because they want to continue making profits with no accountability in the form of regulations, although history shows that business does better under Democratic presidents than under Republican ones. It's been quite clear since 01/20/09 that the GOP, aided and abetted by short-sighted and selfish businesses (not to mention gullible voters easily convinced to vote against their own best interests), have worked in concert to make Obama a one-term president and return the GOP to power.
Willard Romney is a willing poster boy for their plans, as his "business acumen" consists only of creating wealth for his cronies and throwing countless numbers of workers out of work in the process of raiding the companies they work for. I'm also glad that Chris Matthews didn't let this fool get away with more lies.

Do you know what amazes me the most about the current presidential campaign? The constant rhetoric about Romney that we hear is that 'he has the business background to run our government'!

Government is NOT run like commercial businesses! It never has been!

Why don't the journalist say that? Probably because they don't know a damned thing about the things that are covering. I think the majority of them are not investigative or knowledgeable in their trade and it makes me sick to my stomach! The dumbing down of our society is in full play there is no doubt!

Pay attention folks!!! Do your homework.

Good for Chris Matthews!! More folks running those shows need to counter the Republicans bullshit and ask them the tough questions.

It needs to be done w/Romney -but, he won't put himself in those positions. This campaign for President is nothing but more bullshit - not even covering the important facts!

I sincerely hope that the debates will do even significantly more to illustrate Willard's unfitness to be president. Governments CANNOT be run like a business and still effectively serve all citizens. Business is about making a profit, with the CEO's doing whatever they can to increase their bottom line. Even by that standard, Willard Romney doesn't measure up, because hiring was incidental to his making profits for himself and his cronies. I understand that the jobs he DID manage to create were low-paying, benefitless jobs with no upward mobility or the ability to provide a decent living.

I don't know who the dork on the right was, but he picked the wrong guy in Chris Matthews, to try to interrupt!

NOBODY can get a word in edgewise, with Matthews...its why I can't watch his show, and think he should just go with having no "guests" and do a half hour rant, by himself.

On the other hand, he and a tiny handful of others, are the ONLY ones showing any spine, bringing up issues that go against the wishes of the corporate masters that own the very network broadcasting them.

I SO miss reporters we had in past decades, who we could count upon to expose bullshit when it got spread. Today, it seems anyone you see holding a microphone with a network symbol on it, comes off way more like a spokesperson for some corporation, fending off criticism for yet another disgrace to America (sweat pouring off their foreheads, the sign of someone lying.)

I have felt the same way for some time, but was reluctant to express it because I didn't want to sound to conspiracy-theory-ist. Republican big business leaders are complicit with the politicians in holding money back. It's so hypocritcal (nothing new), since most companies are enjoying the run-up of the stock market since the bailouts in 2008-2009. And, now that they have so much cash, they may get so used to it, that even when demand picks up, they will continue to put downward pressure on workers' wages in order to maintain their profitability. Bah! A pox on all their houses.

Kudos to Matthews for holding Fratto's feet to the fire. The shrub tax cuts FAILED. The whole concept of "job creators" is yet just another cynical RWNJ talking point. Consumerism and demand fuel hiring. It's plain and simple. Hiring is usually the course of last resort because it's expensive. I know - I own 4 small businesses. The only way I'm hiring is if I know that it will directly benefit my bottom line, whether it's short or long term. Otherwise I focus on efficiency and cost cutting.

I think Chris has found his niche'! We need MORE like him, appearing as a guest on other people's shows. He is spot on with every point, and not giving the other guy an inch. THIS is how to get through the "idle chatter". Good on Chris.

Sunday's lamestream lineup on "The George Stephanopolous Club House" is mostly rwnj's, including Anne Coulter.

Oh yeah, this should be "must see" tv.
